The tabla is rested on the thigh on the opposite side of your doum hand. It is held close to the body. Alternatively for those uncomfortable or unable to balance the tabla in this fashion, it can be held between the knees but the sound is deadened slightly due to the bottom of the tabla facing directly to the floor. This ‘deadening’ can also occur if percussionists are seated to close to each other or close to a wall and the sound cannot escape behind the players.

Hint, when practicing at home you can put a towel up the inside of the drum to quiet it down so reduce annoyance to others….or you can just annoy them and smile while doing it, lol.

HAND PLACEMENT AND STRIKES.

RIGHT HANDED
If you are right handed the tabla will rest on the left thigh and your doums, teks, slaps, cuts and other effects are done with the right hand, with the Ka done with the left hand.

LEFT HANDED
If you are left handed the tabla will rest on the right thigh and your doums, teks, slaps, cuts and other effects are done with the left hand, with the Ka done with the right hand.

DOUM
The doum is a deep base sound which occurs when striking the tabla as though it is hot just off center in the middle of the skin.

TEK AND KA
The Tek and Ka are higher sounds made using the first finger joints to strike around the rim area where the skin and the rim of the tabla meet. The Teks are played at 9 o’clock for right handers and 3 o’clock for left handers. The Ka’s are done at 12 o’clock for both handed players.

SLAPS AND CUTS
A slap is done with a flat hand, which stops the sound dead on the skin. In other words you slap the skin and it kind of sounds like a loud slapping of someone’s face. The Cut is done with the same hand but the hand is cupped slightly and the hand is held on the skin.

POPS
A pop is done at the same time as striking a sequence of Ka’s. As the Ka’s are done, the Doum hand is placed with the outside of the hand resting on the skin and dragged up towards the Ka hand. This produces a series of sounds that ‘pop’ a begin a ‘tabla scale’ ranging from low to high pops. For successful pops, the Ka finger which is the middle finger must be able to produce sharp Ka’s similar in sound to Teks.

FILLS
Fills are done to fill in before restarting a rhythm set or to elaborate the various rhythms.
