We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

I am assuming that you know the following 3 rhythms.

Baladi
Saidi
Baladi Maloub (aka Reverse Baladi).

Baladi: Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek
Saidi: Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek
Baladi Maloub: Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek

For beginners, these three rhythms are the easiest to put together in a little practice session. They are easy because they are a 'family group' . Each one has double Doums in the rhythm. The two main rhythms are Baladi and Baladi Maloub and Saidi in it's basic form is used to rest and change the feel of each group once the entire drum solo is played. If there is more than one drummer, half can play Baladi maloub while the other half play Saidi. Those two particular rhythms sound great played at the same time, especially when those playing Saidi play louder than the 'Maloub's" :)

When I buy a new computer microphone I'll put up some sound files, but I have some I can upload and link. I never teach Baladi as "Doum Doum Tek Doum Tek", although in it's very basic form is added as the the intro to the full version of a fun drum solo. The drum solo itself, I use for my beginner dancers so that they have easy rhythms to dance to and I use it to teach Dancing to Drums workshops.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FILLS:
Because this is a beginners drum solo, I use the very basic fill Tek Ka, seen as "- tek ka"
When you 'speak' the rhythm groups, the "- tek ka" is spoken as "and a". The fills draw the rhythms together and make them flow smoothly.
So in speaking it they are
Baladi: Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - and a
Saidi: Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek -and a
Baladi Maloub: Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek - and a
And in playing them
Baladi: Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Saidi: Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek - tek ka
Baladi Maloub: Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek - tek ka
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
BEGINNING TO PUT IT TOGETHER:

It is always best to start off slow, then build the tempo once you're used to swapping rhythms. You can swap each rhythm around, eg; 2 bars of Baladi Maloub, 1 bar of Baladi and 1 bar of Saidi or 1 bar Baladi, 1 bar Baladi Maloub, 1 bar Saidi & 1 bar of Baladi again. The possibilities are endless and each 'drum solo' sounds different each time. Once used to that, you can use the Triple Doum Saidi (Doum Tek Doum Doum Doum)

Group 1: Baladi & Saidi

Play 3 bars of Baladi
Play 1 bar of Saidi

Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek

Group 2: Baladi & Saidi

Play 2 bars of Baladi
Play 2 bars of Saidi

Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek

Group 3: Baladi & Baladi Maloub

Play 3 bars of Baladi
Play 1 bar of Baladi Maloub

Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek

Group 4: Baladi & Baladi Maloub

Play 2 bars of Baladi
Play 2 bars of Baladi Maloub

Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek

Group 5: Baladi, Saidi & Baladi Maloub

Play 2 bars of Baladi
Play 1 bar of Saidi
Play 1 bar of Baladi Maloub

Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Doum tek ka tek Doum tek ka tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Doum Doum Tek - tek ka
Doum Tek Ka Doum Doum Tek Ka Tek

Group 5 can then be changed around to any combo of the three main rhythms. Then you can add a 4 bar 'opener' of the basic Baladi beat without fills and add a Zaar (Ayoub) and increase the tempo of the Zaar to end.

To make the rhythms flow together, 'fills' are added that are played like an "and a"

So you can try this one slow for a while then increase tempo once you're used to swapping and changing rhythms. This is the first full length 'rhythm play' that I teach my students. I use the Rule of Fours to make it easy for them to remember it. Each Group is played four times before changing groups. That allows for any drummer who misses a change to catch up :)

INTRO:
Doum Doum Tek Doum Tek
Doum Doum Tek Doum Tek
Doum Doum Tek Doum Tek
Doum Doum Tek Doum Tek

Then Play:
Groups 1 through to 5 using fills.
Repeat Group 4

Most importantly don't rush things. Take it slow at first find some nice slow music with a consistant base rhythm that you recognise and play along. Don't play everything loud! Practice finger rolls from soft and slowly increase it's loudness.

You need to use finger exercises to strengthen fingers and be very aware of where and how you strike the drum head around the rim as there's nothing worse than bruised under knuckles. Build up the 'hardness' that you hit the drum with.

Try this finger roll exercise

Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky
Pinky, Ring, Middle, Index
keep repeating and slowly build up both speed and strength in strikes. lol, don't expect Pinky to fully participate for ages! I play 3 fingers as I have short tendons in my pinkies and they refuse to co-operate, lol.

Try not to get into the habit of leaning your KA hand on the body of your drum, it does affect the sound coming out of the drum and you'll have limited movement.

Sharp TEKS, I do with my middle or ring finger on my right hand (I am right handed so my drum sits on my left thigh). I use my fingernails for 'rain rolls', sounds like rain on a plastic roof.

Basically every drummer has a different way of playing and you need to find a way that is comfortable for you.

Dvd's and videos that are available show a wide range of drumming skills that professional drummers use.

Another trick is to record yourself playing one rhythm for 3 to 5 minutes on tape and you have an instant 'drum buddy'! Then add more rhythms as you learn them until you have a 'drum buddy' who will practice with you for ages. I did this at the beginning and found it great as you also have your 'drum buddy' to stick to the basic rhythms as you learn to fill and elaborate. Actually I found this the best way to practice and give my new students copies so they can have their own 'drum buddy' at home.

WyldeFyre Productions puts on a live show every 1st Thursday at Amy's Ice Cream on Far South Congress. The next show is April 5, 2007. The event opens at 6 with fire spinning classes, then belly dancing performances, then we have fire dancing performances & then we have open performance with live drumming & dancing (all types). We need live drummers (all style welcome - middle eastern is great for the belly dancers, african for the fire dancers, etc) & dancers (belly dancers, fire dancers or other ethnic dancers are all wanted). Please feel free to email me at AmberBarbara@hotmail.com for more information.

I hope the drummers can make it out with us. Live drumming makes the show for me!

Ethnic Drumming & Dancing exhibitions/performances will also be considered.

Other styles of performance art & fire dance may also be considered. Please contact Willow at zuvia_dancer@yahoo.com for other styles of performance art & fire inquiries.

Although made of spun aluminum, tablas can and do break, as do tablas of clay. The rim and rim connection area to the body of the tabla is the most important part of the tabla with the cylindrical body being second most important part.

THE RIM AND CONNECTING AREA OF THE TABLA BODY.

The rim holds the skin onto the tabla body using allan key bolts if the skin is plastic or a series of ropes if the skin is animal skin. The main reason of the rim’s importance is that it is also a playing area of the tabla. Once a rim has cracked, it affects the sound of the tabla and needs to be replaced. Tabla rims are not available separately and as such you would need to replace the whole drum.

Rims never crack on their own and very rarely due to striking a Tek or Ka too hard. You would be more likely to bruise or fracture your fingers before cracking the rim! It is always due to a knock or dropping of the drum. Even dropping or knocking a tabla over on a piece of carpet can cause rim cracking so the first rule of Tabla Care is that when it is not in use, it must be turned upside down onto a piece of carpet (a carpet rug can be bought and easily cut to fit the tabla head and will fit inside the tabla bag as well.

THE PLASTIC SKIN

The plastic skin needs to be replaced if signs of slackness which cannot be tightened by tightening the bolts on the head or if bubbles or thinning of the skin can be visibly seen. Skins are sold separately. Animal or Fish skins are also replaceable but are more durable and are more commonly found on clay tablas. If you have a clay tabla, do NOT oil the animal skin. If the oil comes into contact with the clay, the clay will soften over time rendering the tabla useless. Oil will seep into baked clayware and glazed bakeware if fissures or cracks are there visibly or not. You would be better to extremely lightly apply a very small amount of beeswax but it rarely needs to be done, if ever as it takes a very long time before animal skin will show signs of cracking.

THE RIM BOLTS.

You should have received an allen key with your tabla when you purchased it. Do NOT play around with tightening to tabla rim. This is particularly important if you are not experienced in the sounds of various tablas or do not know the required tightness for your tabla as a couple of things may happen. You can stretch the skin too tight or you could crack the rim with over tightening. You should only need to remove the skin when (and ONLY when) you need to replace the skin.

THE TABLA BODY

If dropped or knocked over hard, the tabla body will do one of two things. It will either get a hole or it will split. Being able to fix it depends on the severity of the injury and where on the drum body it is. If it is a small/medium hole, it can be fixed using car bog and if the tabla is vinyl covered, the vinyl must be removed (either entirely or partially) and all traces of glue removed before bogging and sanding after the bog has cured for 24 hours. Large amounts of car bog WILL change the sound of the drum, so it is best for minor repairs only..... otherwise, you will need to buy a new tabla.

Samiya

I posted this in reply to another Triber about the role of song in bellydance.....enjoy. :-)

Song = made up of one or more musical instruments combined using each specific noises partaining to those instruments in varying scales and counts.

Singer = another musical instrument. It is the only musical instrument that can put an interpretation into words that our brains understand and it is also the only instrument that can tell us exactly how it is feeling and therefore directly affect how we are feeling.

Song, Singer & Dancer = A melodic symphony that is not only heard through the ears but also visually heard as the combination of the music, singers emotions interpreted through voice and the dancer interprets both music and voice through her body. She can either take the music, take the singer, or if extremely skilled she can flow between one instrument to another, the voice alone, the voice and the instrument that the voice is recognising (if you listen closely you will hear that the singers voice will match an instruments 'tuning' eg; in Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" Bob is voice is matched to his guitar's tuning), the rhythm alone or combination of rhythm and instruments and voice.

How she dances depends on many things.

A perfect example is Om Kalthoum's Enta Omri in both cases. The way that music is played plays a big part in how a dancer will perform to it, but as soon as you add lyrics it takes on a whole new clarified meaning for both audience AND the dancer.

The dancer takes music and voice and creates a visual emotion that has the power to make an audience stand and applaude throughout the performance or she can make them sit and silently weep whilst remembering a loved one from long ago. The singer alone also has the same power through voice and the emotions she projects through her voice.

The tabla is rested on the thigh on the opposite side of your doum hand. It is held close to the body. Alternatively for those uncomfortable or unable to balance the tabla in this fashion, it can be held between the knees but the sound is deadened slightly due to the bottom of the tabla facing directly to the floor. This ‘deadening’ can also occur if percussionists are seated to close to each other or close to a wall and the sound cannot escape behind the players.

Hint, when practicing at home you can put a towel up the inside of the drum to quiet it down so reduce annoyance to others….or you can just annoy them and smile while doing it, lol.

HAND PLACEMENT AND STRIKES.

RIGHT HANDED
If you are right handed the tabla will rest on the left thigh and your doums, teks, slaps, cuts and other effects are done with the right hand, with the Ka done with the left hand.

LEFT HANDED
If you are left handed the tabla will rest on the right thigh and your doums, teks, slaps, cuts and other effects are done with the left hand, with the Ka done with the right hand.

DOUM
The doum is a deep base sound which occurs when striking the tabla as though it is hot just off center in the middle of the skin.

TEK AND KA
The Tek and Ka are higher sounds made using the first finger joints to strike around the rim area where the skin and the rim of the tabla meet. The Teks are played at 9 o’clock for right handers and 3 o’clock for left handers. The Ka’s are done at 12 o’clock for both handed players.

SLAPS AND CUTS
A slap is done with a flat hand, which stops the sound dead on the skin. In other words you slap the skin and it kind of sounds like a loud slapping of someone’s face. The Cut is done with the same hand but the hand is cupped slightly and the hand is held on the skin.

POPS
A pop is done at the same time as striking a sequence of Ka’s. As the Ka’s are done, the Doum hand is placed with the outside of the hand resting on the skin and dragged up towards the Ka hand. This produces a series of sounds that ‘pop’ a begin a ‘tabla scale’ ranging from low to high pops. For successful pops, the Ka finger which is the middle finger must be able to produce sharp Ka’s similar in sound to Teks.

FILLS
Fills are done to fill in before restarting a rhythm set or to elaborate the various rhythms.
