Tribal Fest 8 - going to be there?

More specifically, going to be there for Thursday evening?

Lee and I have hatched into existence "Motif" with the aid of Tim Rayborn and Karim Nagi - a ritualistic, community dance experience...

It's a private/invite only event - so if you're going to be at TF next Thursday (May 15th), drop me a message, and I'll send you the URL with the details..

Goober! You need to give me at least a months notice for that kind of thing. :-P Can Karim Nagi do ritual music? I have a tiny little crush on his musical styling so if he can do ritual music that might push me over the edge. Good fortune for you and Lee. I'm "holding space" for Slade at the moment but maybe I can give you a buzz on the West Coast. Date saved. ;-)

" Can Karim Nagi do ritual music? "

Oh yes, Karim can play the hell out of ritual music, if hell resides in music;-) I've known Karim for years now and have spent weeks at a time in his company at various music camps and most recently in Cairo where he was staying with his parents and I was attending Ahlan wa Sahlan. So I feel somewhat qualified to brag up His Excellency, the maestro Nagi. I'll start by saying that if I were stranded on a deserted island with only one musician & teacher, it would be Karim. He's a classically trained with an encyclopedic body of knowledge across musical disciplines. I'm referring to Middle Eastern music, maqams, traditional and sacred, as well as pop, shaabi, jeel and fusion.

Spoon, as a trance sister, I understand that you're asking something very specific about Karim's understanding of ritual music, not whether he can play ayoub! I think you really want to know if he has experience playing for trancers... eh?

Absolutely, he does! As a native Egyptian he was born into the culture that spawned Egyptian Dervish, Tannoura, Zikr and Zar. The sacred is always present in the study ofclassical ME music, and is threaded through the pop if you know what to look for. The last Arab Dance Seminar, Karim's brainchild, was entitled: From ENTERTAINMENT to ECSTASY : Performance vs. Sacred Dance in the Arab World. Educating the dance community about the differences between dancing for an audience and moving in the spirit is a popular lecture topic of Karim's.

      O'kay... am I on Karim's payroll yet?!

You hit the nail on the head there. His skills are truly dizzying but I was having a hard time picturing him playing a single rhythm for any serious length of time. I would love to see that energy turned towards trance. If he did I could see a trance ritual lasting well beyond the small 2 hour limit you are both working with at this shindig. Why did you cap it off at 2 hours? Especially with such a powerhouse musician?

Perhaps some day you can introduce me?

I am so friggin' jealous of all you cats. It would be wonderful to personally shake the hand of The Tempest herself as well as Tim Rayborn.

I had the pleasure of meeting Karim momentarily a week or so ago and the vast musical knowledge that man has made my mind go all asplody. I can imagine that you guys are going to have one kick-ass time.
