Private Beginner's Belly Dance Classes! Learn belly dancing from an inspiring and patient teacher!

First off- introductions! My name is Charlene and I've been a dancer all my life, and a belly dancer for the past four years. I fully believe in the ancient art and beauty of belly dance, and I'm excited to be part of this tribe :)

I'd like to offer private belly dance classes for anyone who feels like they need more one-on-one instruction, privacy, patience and a teacher dedicated to spreading the joy of the dance! You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

Learn to relax into the art and the beauty of the dance and enjoy yourself!

Email me (Charlene) at charleneeldon@yahoo.com, or give me a call at (415) 299-1026

I look forward to hearing from you!

Hey belly dancin' people!

My name is Amy and I'm a student of Bohemian Caravan's Nancy Montgomery in Fort Collins. I've been belly dancing since September of last year and am thoroughly addicted. I'm 20, a history major with an anthropology minor at CSU... er... no previous dancing experience before taking belly dancing... hmm... I guess that's all!

I just got home from the Tribal Soiree in Boulder and performed for the first time with some other students of Nancy's, and holy crap, I can't wait to perform again!

... Okay... I'm pooped out and my bring isn't being quite as articulate with words the way I want it to be, so I'll say I'm done there, heh. I look forward to chatting and meeting more belly dancers in Colorado!

G'day! I'm taking Lia's Friday class this semester for the first time, though I've been dancing for a while (6 teachers in 3 states)... I'm a very big fan of her classes and her style so far. I'm in the post-bac teacher credentialing program and am hoping to teach ELA (like ESL at the K-12 level) when I finish, possibly even in a middle school. I know, I know... middle school kids... you're right, I'm totally insane.

I live in Boulder at the moment but can't wait to move closer to Denver so that I can take more dance classes and practice with all the cool people I've met this year!

Weekly classes with Frank in Golden

Hey folks!!! I'm going to be teaching a weekly class every Sunday in Golden, CO starting February 24th from 2:30 to 5:00pm. Cost is $16 for a single drop-in class or $105 for a 10-class punch-card. Men are welcome to 1 free sample class if they are interested.

Class Description: In these classes, technical dance is taught to give the dancer a foundation within the dance, & also instinctual dance so the dancer no longer thinks about executing moves, but learns to do what comes naturally as if it were second nature.

Hammerhead Sharqi Dance Technique is a style of World Fusion Bellydance that is based in American Tribal Style (ATS) & heavily influenced by elements of Modern-Egyptian Cabaret Style, Hip-Hop, Hula, African, Indian, & Latin dances & bears subtleties of other dance & movement styles including Javanese, Japanese, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Jazz, Ballroom, Martial Arts, as well as Yoga, Pilates, Gymnastics, & many more.

In these classes, the meditative communication channels between mind & body are opened to create a more expressive movement within the dance with a strong foundation & sharp mental focus.

Classes will cover:

1) Conditioning, & strengthening exercises with stretching, Yoga, & Pilates.
2) Identification of anatomical structures used for dancing.
3) Movement vocabulary.
4) Technique.
5) Combinations & layers.
6) Choreography, stage-presence, & venue-tailoring.

Classes may be purchased through the link on Marrakech/Golden's website:

Hello I just joined your tribe. I do not live in your area but am a bellydance student. I took tribal bd about 4 years ago for almost a year until my instructor moved to San Francisco. Tried another teacher but she did caberet & I did not like her methods. She did`nt even stretch before class. Oh well. In January I will start a tribal fusion class. I am very excited. Bellydance is just now starting to become popular in my area so I dont have anyone to practice or share ideas with. The Mystique & beauty of bellydance is something I have always been attracted to. Hoping to make some new friends.
I know I could just order one but I'd like to avoid having to return something because it doesn't fit.

I started taking Gypsy with Lia at Metro State in January, LOVED IT and am now taking those and Tribal classes with the fabulous Molly at TribalTique. I LOVE belly dancing and everyone says I'm getting more obsessed by the day...however between my Tribal and Gypsy classes I'm only taking about 6 hours of classes a week...I could be doing more! Who wants to practice?!?

Hello all, my name is Katina
I am not currently dancing but danced at the studio hosting the workshop that should be posted just below me for over 2 years. Before that I took classes with Janna at Parks and Rec. I first fell in love with bellydance in Maine. My teacher told me I had a natural grace & I couldn't stop.
When I moved back here to Virginia I immediatley got hooked up with an instructor with the goal of becoming a professional bellydancer. And that's just what I did in a few short years. I had the pleasure of learning from my absolute favorite bellydancer who I love from the bottom of my very soul, Ansuya. I had the pleasure of having a serious one on one chat with her in my car when I picked her up form her hotel. She is truly amazing and inspiring. Also had the chance to learn from a couple other well known dancers. I'm not going to run out and audition for the Bellydance Superstars tomorrow but I can hold my own! I have never been one to judge others on their ability or talent. I dance form my spirit and think every woman should try it!
Well, now that I have moved away from my lime light I am starting to have withdrawals something fierce! I am trying to find a quality place to take classes or just bellydance. Someone at work asked me to start classes in the area...that would be interesting!
Well, enough about me!

I am looking for a fellow Bellydancer in Denver, Colorado, who is open to getting in shape with me. I love lifting weights, but would like to get out and do some different things, too. Variety is good, but just getting back into it is great.

Hi there...

I'm taking my first class now. We've had two sessions. It's at the Castle Rock rec center. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I'm motivated to get it! I'm thinking I may have to travel up to Denver or down to the Springs for my next class. We'll see. Thanks for being here and welcoming everyone.

Hmmm...
thought I had posted a thread about the naming contest (read my blog"Ever onward...") I am running for a studio I'm opening here soon. Apologies that I didn't. It's not too late yet for ya'll to send me any ideas/submissions. This week's submissions for the naming contest have been posted to my blog (Entries as of July 22nd). Only one more week to go, so if you've got a name that you think would work for my studio - send it in...
Remember, the winning entry receives $150 buckaroos (U.S. dollars).

I'm off to meet w/ a contractor to get a quote for installing the sprung floors in the dance area, as well as one or two other things I'd like done in the space. And then trying to hook up w/ Shannon who leads several drumming events in the area about teaching a weekly percussion for M.E. rythms at my studio.

Sooo many little details to wrap up...
Peace Out!

Just happened upon this tribe...
(skimmed all the posts before deciding to join myself)

I guess you could call me an intermediate (as my instructors tell me - am intermediate/advanced), but often feel like am still a "baby dancer". Especially when dancing alongside or with my instructor(s), or some fellow dancers w/ waaay more experience than I.
I've been dancing for coming up on a year here soon.

In some ways I feel like I am still a first day beginner, and in others I am more than happy w/ the progress/strides I've made. I'm a lot more comfortable dancing in public and also performing than used to be. I don't just go to a weekly class and SAY I'm a bellydancer - I take multiple classes (3 dance and one percussion [to learn/understand M.E. rythms], and have taken a goodly number of workshops as well).

Soon (VERY soon) though - the course I'm on will get a LOT more advanced and busy...
I've recently been asked if I would like to teach a sort of intro class to people coming to this area on vacation. Knowing that I may not really be ready for this - I've asked one of my instructors if she would be willing to co-teach it w/ me (she said definately).
I'm calling this my "golden opportunity".

However, the establishment would like this class tied into a studio (for insurance/liability and other reasons). So I'm preparing to open my own studio. Now, like most dancers I've "toyed w/ the possibility" of doing this (at some point in the future), but looks like is happening NOW.
The instructor that has agreed to co-teach w/ me has also agreed to teach FOR me at my new studio, and I've spoken w/ a few other experieced instructors that have also expressed interest in being part of this venture (the studio that is). I've been picking their brains and getting good advice/info from both they and from persons that currently own studios themselves (other areas).

But I am still a student myself - and from reading posts on OTHER tribes, even more experienced dancers and professional still are themselves (albeit def more experienced than I am at this stage). So I guess I'm not so outta place among them after all...

Anyway, don't want to ramble on here - just wanted to introduce myself and say "Heya!"

So what moves are you having difficulty with?

I think this might be a bit of (what we call in MMORPG's) a necro-post but I figured I'd ask anyways.

What moves are you guys having difficulty with?

For me, I was excited to get the go-ahead from Joynan to join her intermediate class (she gave me a nice compliment on my technique... thank you thank you thank you Ava). However, I have some major catching up to do on the infamous 3/4 shimmy which I had not encountered until I took one of her classes (she uses them in everything... and she's tough about you doing 'em right too : ) Like a Belly Dance sensei hehe). While the class I took in Arizona was pretty technique intensive, Ava I noticed is more of a knee-shimmy gal and though I've seen her do a 3/4 shimmy, I assume she didn't teach that until her intermediate class so I had no contact with it until I got here. For now, its my Kill Bill 3-inch punch lol... and I guess just practice, practice, practice will fix that.

Also had a hilarious moment in class yesterday when during a choreography they were practicing, they did belly flutters. I've gotten better about ab control (I can pop the upper and lower abs in and out enough to at least be seen if I'm standing still and I can do a pretty decent top to bottom roll) but I have to say, I major-goofied the belly flutter. I had read somewhere that the muscle motion for it is similar to panting, so inadvertently instead of fluttering, I just panted like a hyper-active puppy lol. Looked very silly I'm sure. Still not too sharp on those.

Also zills I'm still getting used to. I have a musical background that involved some time playing the drums, so I'm pretty solid with rhythms once I hear them, so I don't have much difficulty playing them standing still; its dancing while I make rhtyhms that's hard : )

So for me, currently my hurdles are 3/4 shimmes, belly flutters, and zills . I figure we can all share what we're having trouble with and offer advice to eachother as well : )

I'm really wanting to go. I picked up the flyer at Joynan's yesterday; I'm just hoping and praying I can get a job before the payment deadline. I can't go to the one in July because I'll still be working the Ren. Festival so I'm planning on going to the August one if I can get the money.

Anyone else going? The rooms are dorm style so maybe if a bunch of us were going by ourselves we could all room together.

Question about Tribal Fusion (probably a good one for Joanne lol)

Hey gals!

Was wondering... Do any of you have a recommendation on a good teacher/class/place to learn Tribal fusion or the tribal basics that lead up to tribal fusion? I've been a mostly cabaret dancer thus far, and while I'm not going to be switching styles, I do enough fusion work, I've come to the conclusion it would really help to have some knowledge of that style under my belt as well. That and Rachel Brice's utter coolness has eaten my brain lol.

Any suggestions? I'm coming from the Saudi Aurora area (I still get a kick out of that lol) near E-470 and Hampden so the further east, the better.

> Belly Dancing at the Bolder Boulder!!!
>
> It's that time of year again when we all don running shoes and coin belts!
>
> Please join The Boulder Tribe on the belly dance hill for the 29th annual
> Bolder Boulder, Monday May 28th at 6:20 AM for some dancing and fun in the
> sun. This is a great excuse to get together and dance for the joy of it.
> Please come with an (American) tribal look (A La "Fat Chance Belly Dance"
> etc), or come in what you have or what you are comfortable wearing in
> front of 40 thousand people, some of which will be children.
>
> The weather is always unpredictable this time of year, so please bring
> layers, and slather sweat-proof sunscreen on all exposed areas - just in
> case. Signing up By May 11th will earn you a free tee shirt and sack
> lunch added to your dancing fun. Don't forget to bring your own water,
> sunglasses, sneakers, and sunscreen!
>
> Please e-mail me to sign up and I'll pass along specifics about location,
> parking and (hopefully unnecessary) rain plans.
>
> Happy dancing to you,
>
> Lisa Goodrich

TIME: Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th at 6:20 am (roads are closed at
6:20am, race begins at 7:00 am and wraps up by 10:00 am)

LOCATION: The top of the hill on Folsom between Mapleton and Valmont. See
PARKING for where to park.

PARKING: Goose Creek Plaza, the South East corner of Folsom & Valmont.
Remember, to park there you need to be there before roads close at 6:20
AM. Here is a link to the alternate routes
http://www.bolderboulder.org/drivingdirections.htm
and click on alternate routes for a map of open roads.

THINGS TO BRING:
WATER BOTTLE This is very important. You will want to stay hydrated to
feel strong and keep dancing. You'll need this more than anything else.
LAYERS. The morning starts off cool and it can get hotter and sunnier as
the race progresses.
FINGER CYMBALS. Even if you don't play - you can practice! And Runners
look forward to hearing the chimes as they come up the hill.
SUNGLASSES. We dance facing the sun.
SUNSCREEN. Sweat proof sunscreen. Remember you are going o spend 3-4 hours
grooving in the sun - get a good SPF and plan to reapply.
RUNNING SHOES. It's our tradition and sneakers will protect your feet
from the hard pavement, possible sand and gravel.
LIGHT SNACK if you need one. The runners only run a 5k while you dance the
morning away. Bananas are good for potassium and energy.

FREE T-SHIRT: If you need a specific size, please let me know. Most of
the time they just give us larges but I'll do my best to request a
different size. We may or may not get the specific size.
Looking for a couple Christian belly dancers/students interested in potentially forming a fusion troupe...

Hey gals!

I may get some darts chucked at me for even insinuating such a thing, but I figured, "You know, I've been thinking about this long enough, I may as well SEE if anyone out there has been thinking the same thing."

Here's the deal: I'm looking for a couple Christian belly dancers, preferably students with a taste for a variety of music styles (this could range from hip hop, to traditional middle eastern, to heavy metal, goth metal, soundtracks, whatever lol) to put together a troupe that could perform both at Christian and secular venues. Whether your pirmarily tribal or cabaret is no matter; honestly, I'm primarily cabaret and would LOVE to see some tribal fused into troupe numbers. The idea I have is for something fairly unique: not your typical run-of-the-mill Christian bellydancing where we all we are 'allowed' to do is act out Bible stories and portray the dancers on Palm Sunday. It a very experimental idea but I want us to be able to take music with a message and fuse belly dance with it, in styles that young people, young adults, and adults can appreciate. Some potential artists I've already played with include dc Talk, Family Force 5, TobyMac, and Nightwish (who I know isn't a Christian band lol but they have some AWESOME songs). Might this mean we have to wear mesh midriff covers at a few gigs? Yeah sure, why not lol... Also this definitely isn't a case where you'd exclusively be required to only do this troupe or Christian music or anything like that. Its mainly something for fun and maybe a way some of us can use our dancing to minister and serve others.

If nothing else just for fun, I'd like to see if there's anyone who'd be interested in at least trying this. Heck even if you're not Christian, but don't mind things like praying before rehearsal and just want to have some fun with some fusion, I'm cool with it. Again this idea is in the very early stages, I was just curious if there was anyone out there who might be interested.

Keep on rockin! : )

the primal sacred origin of our belly dance! (I know this is long but please read)

the primal sacred origin of our belly dance!

Greetings, this post was a response to the "is tribal belly dance belly dance post" as a new post "is it or is it not belly dance" on the tribal belly dance tribe and on my tribe at Heavy Hips. Many people believe Cabaret is the definitive standard for attributing the "Bellydance" label, but I think not. I've gotten so much mail in response to this post on the origins of our dance and to the thread on this tribe yogaandtheindigo.tribe.net/thre...539cc about how to practice, that I thought I should post the origins writings here. Yep, I'm a writer, so its long, may it be recieved in service to our self exploration, healing and discovery.

Voici, pour votre plaisir.

Every community whether cultural or biological walks a balance between holding and respecting traditions and welcoming the healthy improvisations and inspirations that define change and may eventually in turn become the traditions. Look to the process of evolution - some changes never really "took", others became the backbone and foundations for critical development, some changes were a flash in the night, some radical and big, some small and significant. The point is that that is what life is. It just isn't stagnant. I think one of our (our being us humans) biggest challenges is how we try to control and hold on and make everything concrete. We fear the movement under our feet, fear not having everything be solid and stay there. But in reality from the point of physics - actually nothing is solid. Every moment molecules are constantly leaving their configurations, joining others, exchanging places. Right now all the elements that make up the body we feel is so surely us - are actually the very same that made up the world of neanderthals, we may have the same hydrogen, carbon or oxygen molecules that were in the body of Esther, Cleopatra, Nefrititi or Joan of Arc. And you are sharing your heart, lungs, brain and body with the current rocks, trees, stone, earth and people around you now.

Some communities hold on tightly to their ideas, believing them to be concrete, controlling the pace of change and improvisation so as not to have radical shifts, others hold very loosely, but each community has to walk this teetering tottering constant shifts and movements. Definitions and boundaries and idealogies, guidelines and then practices are critical to the well functioning of any community, but every community will be confronted with innovation and change. The secret is breathing lightly, holding softly, opening ones heart, pausing before one speaks and getting a reality check on REACTING.

How can one define belly dance? I think to most, and in most of the discussion that has happened so far, there is an assumed definition that references very recent history only, so Bellydance is "understood" to mean that which has contemporarily come out of the fertile crescent, the Middle East - Dance Orientale. When we as cabaret dancers say Belly Dance we mean that form of dance that has been developed primarily on the stage in Egypt and there is ample evidence that the cabaret style's fundamental elements were folkloric in origin and balletic. This dance form which was originally very much performed by solo women on stage primarily for a male audience has become a very sophisticated art form and has, as been discussed, become a deep part of tradition in the Middle East at weddings and celebrations. The presumption is that if one is wearing some version of the bedlah and doing movements of the pelvis and torso primarily to Arabic music it is belly dance. However cabaret is not the definitive bellydance that has been done by women for women as long as women have been alive on the planet. Using cabaret as the standard is a limiting definition of bellydance and does nothing to recognize the origin of women's movements of the torso and belly, the earthy, and firey spirals, figure 8's, shimmies, undulations , and circles, the highlighting in general of the creative energy inherent in the female body. The definition of cabaret belly dance may be BY DEFAULT, the all encompassing reference point in our contemporary times for categorizing what is belly dance, but for me that is just a small point in time.

The truth is I believe that this dance (forget what we're naming it right now) of undulations like a serpent in the body, of rocking back and forth on strong thighs like elephants, shimmies like the earth quaking or vibrating, sinuous figure 8's of powerful hips and pelvic encompassing the all creative womb and sacred passage way the yoni, rotating ribcage melting like endless waves into body rolls up and down the female snake spine form - all point to a dance that is sacred and a fundamental celebration of life on Earth and a testament to the creative power and potential that by biology had been carefully placed in a women's body.

I want to tell you a story. Take a deep breath and feel yourself here and now, become one with the beating of your heart and the circle of your breath. Then listen.

Once upon a time a long time ago, many many moons and suns before your present body came to be, your foremothers and foregrandmothers and sisters and brother/fathers lived upon this blue/green pearl land. Traveling in small bands, our early ancestors minds and bodies were acutely in tune with the vital and wild world around them. Smelling, listening, feeling the bones of their Earth Mother, they became oneness aware to the movements of water, when it would come, where it would be, when it may become a force of flooding destruction, or an obstruction to travel. They knew intimately the movement of the bands of animals that roamed in huge or smaller herds, when they came, when they left, where they grazed. They remembered the cycles of berries, leaves, edible roots and grains when they flowered and fruited, and when they came to fallow. Our foremothers and forefathers read the subtle changes in sky, or color and temperature, of smell of electric charge and were in awe of , yet one with nature like we could never be now. Our early forbears were able to be present in gratitude and wonder because they had no understanding of chemistry, or physics, or biology. Upon seeing the magnificence of the sun day after day, the mysterious glowings and showings of the white pearl moon, they imbibed the celestial phenomenons and earthly wonders as magical beings -for how could they be explained otherwise?

In this mindset it is no wonder that the realities of birth and death were acutely present and deeply respected as primordial passages. Life and death were intricately intertwined in the thriving and surviving of the tribe, the death of an animal could be life to the clan, and death of a significant clan member or many could mean the decline of the tribe. A slip on a rock crossing a river, a violent conflict with another human group, the attack of a wild animal, the loss of blood was critical. All of life it seemed was cogently interdependent. Deeply entwined with all that was around them, the people knew that blood could mean death. The red liquid came to symbolize both life and death in a huge way for the people and stimulated the earliest ideologies concerning the why of their existence. Thus we arrive here.

Among the people there was a wondrous inexplicable mystery. Somehow the females of the tribe, all of them together, were inextricably bound to the unfolding cycle of the great white pearl - The moon. Her changing face looming large seemed to call to the women and their bodies, seemed to ask for a blood gift. When it was black and silent, they would bleed together, flowing from the deepest dark and hidden place of their bodies, the blood would flow..... but how could this be - they aren't sick, aren't wounded, ....they don't die? The blood - it is running like a river from deep inside of her and yet she is tending the fire, gathering the roots, they are moving as one body, sitting on the straw, working the hide and yet they live and they live. And time and time again at each dark moon from the time of fullness budding on her chests she joins the non wounded bleeding at the dark time and she does not die? How is this - is she magic, is she the moon? And then more........sometimes a woman stops moon bleeding with the sisters and her belly becomes the moon itself. Waxing ever so slightly month to month a crescent fullness, then more and more until it is full and round like the full moon shining her face, and there is life within! It moves. 9 -10 moons pass and then the power of earthquakes and sea is within her. Unable to contain the rolling and rumbling she begins to move and sway her moon like belly. Rolling her hips like mountains and oceans she begins to circle and shake, undulating force moving through her torso from chest to belly, round and round, waving through her again and again, uterus, abdominals, glutes, obliques, hip flexors, soas and legs begin their work. Snake and tide uleashed within Her, turning, twisting, left and right, up and under, over and around, spiraling around her ample thighs and huge moon belly, pushing, rolling, rocking, vibrating, vibrating, vibrating and then...... she gushes and shudders and brings forth another human life! A new being, a child of the tribe. Yet still more.... breasts spill forth ambrosia, white milk, sweet and life giving river. She is like the Mother Earth herself - breeding, giving life, feeding life, feeding us, creating life. SHE IS MAGIC, she must be omnipotent, she is Goddess! Different she is, because only she has these powers. She has the power of life and death and it is the moon and the snake and the EArth, they are she and she is them and now we see. Her blood makes her separate, gives her power, her blood and the moon. Life is Goddess our mother, watches over us and takes us as well. Like these super humans of ample breast and thigh and secret dark caves manifesting blood and life, Earth and Woman and Moon - One.

And thus the magic ritual dance begins, 9 moons pass and another has grown the moon in her belly as the sacred blood has ceased to pass. Now her birth dance is coming, rumbling from deep within, her large hips and belly begin to roll and circle and shake, the vibration undulating up and down! "Come my sisters! Come we know what we must do! Move our hips, shake and undulate, call forth the snake, the life within her. Help her bring it forth, come - dance your womb, ignite the fire and river and earth within, moving the breath and blood through - bring this life through and into our tribe." And so they gather, circling Her, dancing the dance of life, with her, for her, for themselves, for the life of the entire clan. The dance must be done, must insure the success of life, must protect and sustain the mystery, the magic. "She" is called upon to protect, she must be the vessel through which the Divine Goddess guides us. "Shhhhhh, listen and watch her divine mystery is cloaking you."

Breathe deep and pause.

Do you see now my sisters - where you come from? This belly dance it isn't "belly dance" it is sacred movement celebrated from the beginning of time, practiced by women for women, for the life of the clan. Because our foremothers bled and didn't die, because they could create life by themselves, because from their breast flowed nectar and because they were in power with the moon - they must be magic. It is easy to see how without the understanding of biology (yes the guys finally figured it out - had to do with domesticated animals reproducing), the concept of Goddess filled our forebears minds, hearts and spirits. Its easy to understand where the movements of belly dance come from. I have birthed twice and there is no doubt in my mind that the spiral snake and circles of eternity are in my womb and hips. We understand that dance comes from life. That it is an act of people self-reflecting, as well as communing with something larger than itself. After 9 years of teaching and dancing with hundreds of women, I hear again and again how the first time they saw belly dance, be it Cabaret, ATS, or Tribal Fusion, be it Turkish, Moroccan, or Beladi from Egypt, that a deep recognition took place. All women recognize Belly Dance in all its forms, they know it when they see it because its in our genetic makeup. It is our birthright.

I saw Cabaret the first time I ever saw Belly Dance, and that was at 32, after dancing already for 25 years. I knew that I would never wear that particular costume or those high heels or prance around titillating the audience in powder blue chiffon, but damn!, that pelvic, womb and torso thing was something and I knew it was mine! And I could recognize its fundamental relevance regardless of the dance style. Yes, Cabaret is a style as is Tribal Fusion as is ATS. So what I'm wanting to re-member us to ladies is the bigger context. Yes I fundamentally define belly dance as incorporating the undulating movements of the pelvis and hips, hip drops, hip lifts, pelvic rotations, figure 8's, combined with shimmies, rib cage rotations, body undulations and lots of isolations, and I think ululating has to be in there too for me to call it Belly Dance, and where the costume highlights the hips, womb, belly and torso. How much you cover of the rest is up to you and your style. How do we know its not Polynesian or Hula - well music, costume cues and hand and upper body movement and voice and by assessing the other movements done with the ummies. I've never seen Hula or Polynesian use full body undulations or backbends, Turkish drops or shoulder shimmies.

Cabaret dance, which is what most are referring to here as the "belly dance" is one step in a long evolution and life of Womens Sacred and Original Dance and has, like Women and like the Goddess, traveled through a long long colorful life and torrid history, from being Divine, Divinatory and Sacred, to Maligned & Despised and Dirty and Evil, reduced to a dance of sexual invitation and titillation. I see the ATS style and Tribal Fusion style of Belly Dance as contemporary womens reclaiming of an ancient dance; there is so much feminism in the practices of the dancers I know here on the West Coast and in the US in the ATS and Tribal Fusion communities. And lately some of the titiallation has come back I think in the Tribal Fusion culture, but it still feels very different. Still feels like women dancing for women to me. I mean if you wanted someone to comment on, or love your dance, (and that is a another thread) - whats more important to you, that other women in the community get what you're doing, or the guys? Who is showing up and doing all this talk and defining and philosophising and practicing and undulating??? Us, women. We're doing this to find our voice, heal our wounds, commune together, be strong, empowered, and yes there is still in there the beauty and sexy thing, but I think we're really wanting to celebrate that we are CREATRIX, PROGENITRIX, GREEN SLITHERIN', ALIVE AND PULSIN, FECUND EARTH SAVIN', MIDWIFING BIRTH AND DEATH WITCHES KIND OF THING. We're embracing the dark, the lights, the multicoloured, multi gendered, multi sized, and definitely multi aged tapestry of it all and you can't stop poetry. This is what I feel is real about the Belly Dance experience for women and its the private and collective journey. In that journey Belly Dance is a movement for and about women and making sense of their contemporary lives. In that sense there is no restriction in defininition, that comes with professionalism and performance or creating a dance terminology and technical standards - all of which we are also doing now. But this is about the magic of something ancient and sacred that we've re-discovered and in this song Belly Dance is alive and thriving.

I've got women 20-60 straight, gay, pink to brown, all having their lives busted open by Belly Dance (Heavy Hips here in Santa Cruz). And I've got hip hop, ballet, jazz, yoga, folkloric Arabic, Turkish and N.African, Flamenco, W.African, Afro Cuban, Bharat Natyam and Odissi, and theatre all mixed up in that along with heavy doses of meditation, self reflection, mindfulness, green feminism and buddhism, anti-capitalism, permaculture and joyful giving gratitude and prayer. Yes I can tell when a troupe is more hip hop than belly dance, more traditional ATS, more folkloric or more jazz, more theater or modern, or cabaret, but damn as long as you've got that bra (okay or sexy vest or choli) and awesome hip adornment going on, bringing yourself and all of us to converge on the belly, womb, torso and center of the universe the YONI, I think it falls into the category of Belly Dance.

I am blessed, I am blessed, I am blessed,
In service, Palika

Anyone trying out for the Ren Festival?

The subject says it all... Anyone else planning on trying out for it?

I do character acting along with my dancing, so I'm not sure whether I'll be focusing on dance or acting (plus I don't know any local dumbek/oud/nay players who are trying out) but I was wondering if anyone else was planning on auditioning. For me, things are kind of hinging on a mission trip I'll be taking to Uganda this summer for two weeks (and I'm not sure if those two weeks collide with the festival, they haven't given us dates yet), but if it doesn't and any other students were planning to try out, maybe we could do a double act lol. Also, has anyone actually acted/auditioned for the festival before?

Last Semester's Belly Dance DVD

For all of those who were in the Metro Belly Dance Class last semester and ordered a DVD from my boyfriend who recorded the final performance, I'm sorry that it has been taking a very long time to get to you.

He has the DVD finished on his computer, the only thing that has been taking a while is burning the performance on a disc. Somehow the DVD program is not working no matter what he does. He has requested help from the Dell Tech Support and they are very slow to reply his requests.

Once again, I'm sorry for any inconvience, we are trying all we can to get this finished. I will keep everyone updated on the progress and if you have any questions, just let me know!

Thank you for understanding

Potential Get-Together Idea

You know, we've got a lovely group together here, all of which are students of different styles... I know it gets confusing when it comes to the whole Tribal/Cabaret issue, but I was thinking, maybe we could set up an event/get-together where we all come together to share some techniques that we've learned from our individual styles. This bypasses the barrier because, although I'm not really interested in American Tribal Style, Tribal Fusion does interest me (especially after having seen the lovely Rachel Brice) as a style to learn more about, even though my primary learning is focused on Egyptian Cabaret and other types of dancing.

I don't know, call it a crazy idea, but might be a way for us to make some fellow student friends, those looking for troupes may be able to find some, we can learn about other styles without having to dish out for a full class session (when it may just need a workshop level of overview to qualm the curiousity lol... or to point someone in a new direction for their studies), and may open up some options for putting our own students shows together in the future. There's so many great styles, and its great to have oppurtunities to show and share them all.

This is just a brainstorm, it would need some serious thinking out before being done, but any thoughts on how, if, maybes?

I just had the pleasure of seeing Raks Carnivale in Mesa, AZ and WOW what a show. Its better than Riverdance. There's some amazing talent and fusion in there and both the tribal and the cabaret gals are amazing (Jillina and Rachel Brice, lovely as ever). Frank you are in for a good show during your visit : ).

Also got to attend one of Jillina's workshops during the day which was very good as well. She's an awesome teacher and although alot of the choreography was a stretch for me, it was $60 well spent. Just wish I could be there for the drum solo workshop tomorrrow. There was this girl there who looked like exactly like Joanna lol.

32 Re: Live Arabic Music and open dancing, Aladdin Restaurant, every SaturdayToday, 9:20 AM
It's a restaurant, so it's family friendly, but might be a bit late for the little ones (9pm to 1am). I'm just re-posting exactly what I recieved from Chakib's wife....I believe there is no cover, but I'm sure it would be expected that you buy some food to support the restaurant...dinner or at least appetizers and drinks I would think. Apparently there was a good turn-out and response last Saturday which was the first one, but they were mostly listeners. Since there weren't many taking advantage of the open dancing to great live music, I thought I'd get the word out to the dance community.

To be absolutely sure about a cover charge, I'd call the restaurant.

Salaam.

"Heavy" Women

Hey everyone!

I've been in Chicago for the last couple of days watching Synchronized Ice Skating. My mom is actually part of a team and I'm her to support them :)

Anyway, I don't have all that much to do around here but to observe whats going on around me. The number one thing that I noticed about the women who ice skate are that they are concerned about weight. People who watch always are telling me, "Oh, look at that girl, she's too heavy to be wearing that dress." or "don't you think they should lose weight before they try out for the team?" Oh my gosh! The comments that I've been hearing are horrible! it makes me so sad that not one person comments on their skating, but judges their looks and how "heavy" they might be. I've even tried to say that it doesn't matter if they can skate the program, so why judge? But, they still come up with some lame excuse. :(

So... belly dancing has made me appreciate women so much more than I've noticed until this trip in Chicago. Because a few years ago, I would have agreed with most of these comments.

So girls, I believe that our main goal should be to help educate other women that if you're healthy and happy, what difference does it make how you look? I know its simple to say, but so many people agree with the comments above and don't take the time or effort to really think about what they're saying.

Hi, My name is Telisa. I started taking bellydance classes at Dance Fusion Studio in 2005, and though I LOVE the dance, I have not been consistent. Life always has something else in mind, it seems. But it is time to start again and stay in community with the beautiful and wonderful women of bellydance. I have heard how awesome Lia is and plan to check it out soon. . . there are a few things I have to get in order first.

I will check in again soon. It is good to see another denver bellydance tribe. ;)

Why Belly Dance?

I'm just curious why everyone here chose to belly dance. Recently I have been looking around at different kind of dancing, just to see whats out there, thinking about maybe trying out something else along side belly dancing.

The reason I chose to belly dance was because Joanna started taking class a little bit before me, and when I saw her dancing, I knew that she was enjoying herself as a person, and looked beautiful doing it. I then became curious about it and started going to the free classes that Lia was teaching and fell in love with it. Plus I used to take ballet and did so for 10 years, and it just wasn't fun anymore. Actually it was more stressful than anything. It makes you feel the opposite that belly dance does. I was always worried how I was looking and was trying to make friends the whole time, but most ballet dancers are rude.

So... why belly dance? You had all these choices of dance.. or did you?

Hi!

I just joined... I'm a student of the Magic-Hips troope in Charlotte, NC. I've been dancing since January (almost a year! wow...) and have mainly taken cabaret classes, with some ATS and tribal fusion classes. I have gotten addicted! :) My first ever performance will be on December 10th, my winter recital. This should be interesting... I'll be dancing in the hardest dance of level 2! (The studio runs on a 4 level program.)

Have a wonderful day!

-Jenny :)

Happy to be part of this tribe - Hi!

Hi, my name is Bobbie (dance name Anisah) and I'm so excited to be invited into the tribe. I dance with Utah State University's Middle Eastern Dance Club (USUMED) in Logan, Utah, and I've been with troupe Zivah for 3 years, danced about 4 years -- mostly caberet though I thoroughly enjoy watching and learning tribal and other dances.

One of the many joys I've found in dancing is the comradre I haven't experienced since middle school (I'm 46 years old). There have been a few exceptions and nothing is perfect, but I've tried other hobbies and social events that aren't nearly as accepting of diversity as the belly dance community seems to be. I see mothers and daughters and sometimes granddaughters dancing in one class. I see women of all races, religions, backgrounds, ages, body types, a few men have dance with our classes, you name it...it really touches me when people "get it".

I also love the sensuality of dance and movement. I think our culture is getting more accepting of sensuality and sexuality, but in general American culture is or has been pretty repressed with regard to sensual expression. I would love to get past this!

My profile will tell you a little more about me. One item I haven't posted there that is new and significant is that I am in the process of ending a 28 year marriage -- both of us agree it's best and are working through it amiably. Now if we can get the legal system to cooperate...don't get me started.

I'm ready for a fresh start and lots of new friends, so here's to fellow dancers!
