I missed the show but here's a clip - www.youtube.com/watch
I was wondering when a dancer would be featured on the programme, however I dislike the way the judges have sexed it up. Also it's just my opinion but I felt the performance was a bit rushed and didn't flow.
Any thoughts?

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 3:08 PMI saw it too and was mildly irritated by Simon Cowell's jaw hitting the floor as she walked out. I agree about the performance too, but perhaps that was because it seemed to be cut down and switching camera angles? I'm not sure :) -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 4:39 PMI think she did well and had a lovely personality.
She looked very classy and can you blame the men...a very typical reaction !But all in all it was a good image for belly dance. She's young and had to show her "wares" in a short space of time and high up on astage to a big non BD audience and I think she pitched it just right.
Well done to Sophie and that costume was lovely -

Wed, May 7, 2008 - 11:24 PMPerformance wise we did only see a clip and i think she did well...she held herself very well and did look classy and seemed a nice person. Can we blame men from finding her sexy? She did look really good and it just showed how men are alured by the beauty of a woman who can shake her hips. -

Thu, May 8, 2008 - 1:32 AMat first I thought it seemed rushed but on 2nd watch as you say the chopping of the camera and not sure we got to see all of it. she was sweet and looked great in her costume, looking forward to her next performance .
how about the old lady they showed the tiniest clip of , she was great so elegant in her pale blue costume and veil :-) -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 3:55 AMI thought she pitched it just right too. She had a great costume, beautiful smile, elegance, skill and bags of personality.
One of my students said she was all tummy without travelling or nice arms, but I think thats all in the edit - so fingers crossed we get to see more of her later in the series. -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 10:54 AMShe's very pretty with a nice figure and very nice elegant costume. Her dancing was nice, but I felt that the technique was a bit lacking - to please a bellydance audience at least! Maybe in a few years with a bit more training she will be a force to be reckoned with....
However, for a non-bellydance audience it was great - lets face it, the great British public (including Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan) have a 'fantasy' of what a belly dancer is/does and she provided it very well :-)
But, it will certainly raise the profile of belly dance, which is always a good thing.
And good for her for going for it - wouldn't it be great if she won?
What did Piers mean about some dancers bellies 'not wobbling in the right way' - is there a wrong way??? LOL !

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 3:58 PMIt's great she's out there representing belly dancers and she looks beautiful. Simon Cowell had me hooting with laughter when, jaw on floor and looking as though he had just seen the most beautiful thing on two legs, he brushed away the glass of water with the comment 'be professional' and you knew, just knew, that he would give a yes, before she'd danced a step.
This, and all the hype and reaction from the presenters, the way the performance is cut so that you can't judge it for yourself, and then have to listen to the judges' opinions, all reminded me why I don't watch the show.
And although she's raising awareness of belly dance, it rather supports the stereotypical male idea of belly dancers. I didn't spot another, older belly dancer in the clip? I'll have to watch again ... -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:50 AMThat reaction was exactly what kind of irritated me - she did a good job though - she was bubbly and costume was lovely - just a shame that they have to edit the performance so much that we couldn't see what she was really like -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 7:46 AMAbsoloutely, we are all rooting for her. I also saw the tribal girls this week :-)
How nice is it to see both styles of bellydance on the same program? :-)
Good luck to all x

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 2:31 PMI happened to see the performance tonight and then found this thread. Must admit that it got on my nerves somewhat, particularly as the staging seemed to be - in my opinion - bending over backwards to play up to the "sexy bellydancer in front of drooling guys" stereotype! And however talented she may be, if the judges think she's outstanding, it probably confirms that they have little or no experience of seeing bellydancers at the highest level. I don't want to be unduly negative, but I couldn't help feeling that something was lacking, maybe sincerity? -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 2:50 PMI agree with you it was ok, but I think that the acts that won were much better. But the costume was great and she looked really nice. -

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 3:00 PMShe seems really sweet. Bless her! Unfortunately, she didn't make it to the finals but best wishes for the future to her!
Love & light, VMx

Re: Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 9:13 AM"I don't want to be unduly negative, but I couldn't help feeling that something was lacking, maybe sincerity? " With whom the dancer or the judges?
Not rewatched it but there was one backbend? Don't see how that was playing up to a stereotype.
"it probably confirms that they have little or no experience of seeing bellydancers at the highest level"
nor has the general public, you think if Fifi/Dina or any BD was on stage they'd get to the final?
I'd treat all their opinions with a pinch of salt, I believe Cowell was responsible for the teletubbies 'hit', Holden got famous for cheating on Les Dennis.
