I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.
It's hard to believe it's over this year! Keep an eye out for more announcements about next year through our mailing list.

I also got asked about TSHIRTS. You can order them online via the Gothla UK website : www.gothla.co.uk
(under 'shop')

I'm off to bed now to rest my achey feet!

It was great to see you all. Lots of smiles everywhere. As bizarre as that sounds!

Raqs Brit - what did ya think?

Seeing it from a different perspective - ie, not doin 7 workshops like last year and have 2 young children in tow, I still enjoyed it. Am still not keen on Blackpool - especially leaving the Winter Gardens late Sat afternoon to try and find somewhere to eat. Lots of drunk hens and stags about already.
Loved the open stage - great talent out there. Especially Dawn and Gem from Khalgani - what a performance, hope it goes on You Tube.
So wish Christine had won that awful frock rather than a trader!!!!!!!!!
Thought the show seemed sparse with only 10 BDSS dancers. Bozenka was brilliant, I'd never rated her much before but thought she was definitely one of the highlights.
The first half of the show was - hmmmmmmmmmmmm ........ different!
Sorry to have missed Fri eve show but heard that was entertaining.
Can we have Raqs in Brum next year - more central I think!
x

New to belly dance....

I'm new to the world of belly dance and wanted to ask for some advice.
I completely fell in love with the Tribal Fusion style a few months ago after seeing a video of Rachel Brice on....... YouTube (believe it or not!). I've had a look for classes on this paticular style but haven't found anything. So what I wanted to ask was, do you think I should take (regular) Belly Dance classes or stick to the dvds on tribal fusion??
There is a class teaching Tunisian, Egyptian and saidi where I live... what do you think?

Does anyone know of any Tribal Fusion classes, workshops or events happening in the Midlands or anywhere in the UK?

Just informing anyone interested who has not seen the information via the BDSS site calendar (http://bellydancesuperstars.com/community/calendar_1.php) that the dates of the UK tour in October are now known and some, perhaps all, of the tickets are now on sale. I've bought tickets for London performances at the Bloomsbury theatre and there are also shows at six other UK venues. They must like Basingstoke as it's on the schedule again!

That's right - gents, ladies, and creatures of the night, Gothla UK is very proud to announce "ABdomination" - a club night in association with Gothla UK, with an open stage for gothic bellydance performances followed by an all-night club extravanganza with 3 top quality DJs from the Leeds, Birmingham and our very own Leicester!

DJ Cruel Britannia - http://www.myspace.com/cruelbritanniaonline
Neal Unreal (of Screaming Banshee Aircrew) - http://www.myspace.com/nealunreal
DJ Nigelmouse - http://www.darkassimilation.org

Doors open to the public from 10pm onwards, however Gothla UK attendees will be there from 9pm for open stage gothic bellydance performances, which will then blend into the club night.

Please feel free to copy and paste the e-flyer in the photo gallery to anywhere you think might be interested! The more, the merrier (or broodier, depending on your 'level of goth' !) ;)

If you've got any questions, please get in touch!

Darkest Blessings,

The Gothla UK team!

atttend a workshop that is cheap, but with a lot of other students in it (I'm talking up to 60 dancers)

or

attend a workshop that has fewer numbers (like 10 - 15) but pay a higher price??

Both have their advantages....I for one would pay to have some individual attention, but then again I'm obsessive about my technique...But for people who are newer to BD, I can see where a larger, cheaper workshop would have it's advantages.

Whatcha think?

This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well.
This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist, class recitals, parties photos and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume. May see photos in my pics on page 1.

The bra will fit a 34 C. The bra cups are covered in a pink colored fabric with pink bugle beads sewn into the fabric. The bra is trimmed in a gold sequin gimp trim. The bra has beaded fringe made from pink seed beads that hangs about 4 3/4 inches long in groups of three .The neck straps are about 34 inches long and tie in a criss cross manner with D rings. The side panels are covered in a pink color velvet fabric(as well as the neck straps I would like to add) The side panels have D rings attach to the ends to add closure for the bra. The is bra is lined and very sturdy will hold it's shape.

The belt is cover in the same pink beaded fabric and gold trim as the bra cups. . The belt is one piece and is a tie front as if it were a hip sash . (has a bit more weight to it than a hip sash) The belt has an elastic casing in the back that can be gather to help with a better fit around the hips for a dancer with curves. The belt is 35 inches long. The belt will fit a small to medium . the belt can be sized down before I send it if you would like it smaller. The fringe is made from pink colored seed beads like on the bra and is about 5 3/4 inches long.
Annual balkanian summer rroma dance workshop

I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

Hello everyone!

In my haste to make it to my open stage slot, I forgot to hand my camera to my lovely assistant, and so managed not to take home any video of my performance. :(

On the bright side, there were some people filming, so I'm hoping that one of those people might be on Tribe and will get in touch. If it helps, I performed around 1:30pm on Saturday.

If you have the footage, please get in touch! Hope all is well with you!

Introducing Fancy Tapes - UK Home for Sparkle, Glitter and Shine!

Hello All

I hope you don't mind me advertising my business here. I checked with Dawn O first and she said it would be OK because I understand that like hoopers, belly dancers are often looking for shiny, sparkly tapes to decorate with.

I set Fancy Tapes up earlier this year to import and sell all manner of pretty tapes as well as colourful vinyl and cloth tapes. Originally I just wanted a few for my own hoops, but that has somewhat grown!

Please have a look. My web site is still very much in it's development state, but it's fully functioning and the shop sells more shiny things than a magpie could ever hope to find.

http://www.fancy-tapes.co.uk

Best wishes.

Tribal Photos found. Do they belong to anybody?

Hi, can anybody help?

I'm clearing out some stuff that's been boxed through two house moves, and have come across an unlabelled CD. On it are a load of photos of tribal dancers, plus some non-tribal ones too.

From what I can gather, they were taken by somebody who has travelled to the USA to visit an old school friend. The date stamp is April 2006. I've posted a couple of the photos on my BellyNut tribe photo album: http://tribes.tribe.net/bellynuttribal

If you know anybody who travelled to the USA (one of the events seems to be called Casbah Studio) then please pass this on to them and ask them to get in touch. There must be some amazing memories on here and I'd hate it if they were mine and were lost!

Thanks,
Nicola

Just booked myself into the Alumhurst Hotel ( www.alumhursthotel.com ) which comes highly recommended and I've checked with them - they have vacancies if anyone is struggling. Can't wait to see everyone!!! Mwah habibi's!

Last Few Spaces - Improv Skirt Workshop

There are three spaces left for this Sunday's workshop:

IMPROVISATIONAL SKIRT
By SO MANY requests, it will be a *repeat* of the last workshop on Improvisational Tribal Skirt. As with last time, we will cover how to incorporate the skirt into the ATS format whilst keeping all of the important ATS elements, plus the breakdown and drilling of three or four original combos that are used by Bodhaia Tribal.

This workshop is suitable for improvers/intermediates/advanced, and is not recommended for complete beginners. It incorporates a lot of spins, layered movements, and fast counted movements (hence the request for a review of the same workshop!)
You will need a skirt large enough to be held at the hem, with arms raised out to the sides.

It will be held on Sunday June 15th from 3.30 - 6pm, South Kilworth Village Hall, South Leicestershire.
£15 each (Enrolled class students or repeat attendees £12 each).

Limited numbers due to space requirements! To book, please e-mail me or call 07788 925074

Thanks,
Nicola

A WORKSHOP WITH AMEL TAFSOUT
BERBER DANCE From Algeria

A rare opportunity to study with one of the most charismatic and acclaimed International Choreographers, performers and master dance instructors of North African Maghreb Dance. Amel which means ‘Hope of Spring’ has mesmerized audiences in the Middle East and North Africa as well as in Europe, the U.S.A and New Zealand with her expressive and stunning stage presence. The workshop will explore the different Berber dance styles of Algeria including the legendary dancers of the Ouled Nail.
“The experience I had with Amel was so moving. It was like I spent two hours sitting across the table from a medicine woman. She had so much to offer and I left that day feeling enlightened. Amel reminded me why I dance. The strength, beauty and dignity that goes along with this dance means to me more than anything in the world”.

Sunday June 15th 1pm – 4pm £30.
YMCA 44, Stockwell Rd, Stockwell Tube

Hi Ladies,

Conservatism is always a depressing thing. Not that bellydance *needed* to be censored, but according to some Saudi's it sure does. And they have the money to impress their beliefs on whole countries. Sigh. This is very, very sad indeed.

Well, I can't believe I have to do this. I've never had to re-sale my tickets frantically at the last minute, but here goes.

Due to my school (it's the always the ones nearest to you that do you in, isn't it?) changing crucial deadlines, I have been forced to cancel my trip to Raqs this year.

If ANYONE WANTS RAQS BRITANNIA TICKETS,DINNERS, EVENTS FOR TWO OR ONE PERSONS PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP!

I realize the probability of this is probably low, but please, let's make a deal or something. I'm American, and converting these British pounds into dollars is really awful for me.

I was informed that I could sell the tickets, and notify 'Jesse Stanbridge'.

Britain's Got Talent - Bellydancer

I missed the show but here's a clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp-1wLYifnk

I was wondering when a dancer would be featured on the programme, however I dislike the way the judges have sexed it up. Also it's just my opinion but I felt the performance was a bit rushed and didn't flow.
Any thoughts?

Wanted - chiffon veil

Hi

I'm on the hunt for a good quality chiffon veil to finally replace the organza one i made when i started dancing, i cant buy silk because i'm vegan but i love the look of the silk veils.
I've surfed the net without much luck, they all seem to have coins or sequins round the edge. I'm just after a plain rectungular one...or even with braid round the edge.

Your help is much appreciated...
I know they gave the wrong impression of the other bellydancer - all sex talk etc, and they've gone on about support bras for this lot!
However, it'd be so great to get a tribal act in the final and promote our lovely hobby/obsession to the general public!

Middle Eastern sheet music?

This may be a bit of an obscure question, but is anyone aware of a source for Middle Eastern sheet music? My internet searches have been fruitless. A friend's boyfriend wants to accompany her dancing on piano (he was going to learn to drum, but has an extensive piano/keyboard background and prefers to stick with it), but so far she has been unable to find piano transcriptions of any of the orchestrated music, which we thought may be the most readily available.

Hello all.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Ta

(X-post) Neohips photoshoot in Bury St. Edmunds, UK

So Neohips finally had the opportunity for a decent outdoor photoshoot in the gorgeous gardens of Bury St. Edmunds Abbey. The sun kinda skipped out on us last minute, so the photographer (Andy of Oh Gray Photography based in the local area) had his work cut out for him in regards to lighting, but I think in the end it turned out quite well.
I had a fun time putting together this little slideshow with Neohips own sound playing along with some of our choice shots. Check out for yourselves and hope you agree:

Thanks to all of you who have enquired about Barefoot’s Tribal Vibe in Aylesbury and other Barefoot events. Info is now on its way to you or on the website www.barefootbellydance.co.uk
There has been some confusion with people asking us about the Barefoot Festival/Goddess Camp in Leicestershire – this is not a Barefoot Bellydance event and we are not teaching or performing there.
We have lots of other Barefoot Bellydance events coming up – our next is at Chippenham Folk Festival from 23rd-26th May, where we are teaching three workshops, and performing both in the arena and streets over the weekend. Hope to see some of you there – do come and say hello!
Further details of Barefoot Bellydance’s forthcoming events will appear here soon, but if you have any enquiries do email Steffi on
Barefootsteffi@hotmail.com

Belly Dance Tribe for Beginners

I have started a tribe where topics relevant to beginners can be discussed...BUT
All levels of dancers are most welcome, as more advanced dancers advice and knowledge will be much appreciated.

I just felt that as a new comer to the scene, that it would be a nice place for other newbies to share their thoughts, or raise discussions relevant to our level, and hopefully receive advice for advancing.

I would also welcome people wanting to post up workshops aimed at open, or beginner to improvers levels, as i know myself that i want to go to more of these, but find that they are not well advertised as the intermediate/advanced workshops with the star's!

My teacher recommended this workshop with Karine, its open level so suitable for Beginners and intermediate.
I have only ever done one other Arab/Flemenco fusion workshop before, and absolutely loved it, it was sassy, and fun.
Is any one else on here going?
Have any of you been to one of Karines worshops before, and what did you think of it.

Just wanted to say hi. I'm hoping to visit your part of the world next summer (09) and am hoping to make some dance contacts before I go this time! (I spent the summer of 05 in Prague, didn't dance at all while there, and came home to New Orleans only to be sent away for the next four months due to Hurricane Katrina. I won't let that much time pass between dances again!)

I'd love to meet dancers (esp those doing ATS or Tribal), find out about classes/workshops, learn where to shop, and get any insider info (esp. about food, local hotspots, and more). I don't know where, exactly, yet my trip will take me, but I'm hoping to spend two months touring around, and the UK is definitely on the list.

much love.

Just thought that if anyone is heading to Europe for the performances (and/or workshops) in Paris, Shiedam (near Rotterdam), Barcelona or Berlin (Rachel only) in June, they might like to say so here and possibly say hello to anyone else also going whilst over there.

I couldn't resist booking the trip to Schiedam as the Oriental Dream line-up is fantastic, with Jillina, Silvia Salamanca and The Uzume also appearing.

Ladies,

Today I have been contacted by a PR company who need 200 belly dancers for a publicity stunt by a major airline! This is happening next Tuesday in London from 9am to 5pm.

I have checked that its not an April Fool prank and I have been assured that it isn't!

I believe costuming will be provided as they want everyone to be dressed the same. You will be paid.

If you think you can take part in this, please let me know by email on info@kismetbellydance.co.uk

Thanks!
New sword ban petition. Please read!

I have written another petition about the sword ban (there are a couple of others i think) :

Please show your support and sign this petiton:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/dancers/

It reads:

We the undersigned propose that dance be included as historical re-enactment or sporting activity within the exemption for the purchase & use of swords.
HEALTH/FITNESS/SPORT: Dance promotes a healthy lifestyle & is often taught as a form of aerobic sport exercise.
Other classes focus on technique & performance, at a professional level a good knowledge of fitness & physiology is required.
Belly dancers & many other types of traditional folklore dancers learn to use various props, such as sticks & swords which requires a great deal of skill,
Takes years to perfect & requires absolute stability of the head & neck, & flexibility & power.
Thus, Types of dance that use swords as props, are 'an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess' which is the definition of sport
therefore, should be included within the Sporting Activity exemption.
HISTORICAL PRESERVATION: Swords have been used in many traditional folklore dances in England since as far back as 1700s.
These dances are forms of art that are of great historical & cultural relevance, Banning the use of these swords will inevitably cause them to die out.
It is crucial that they are preserved & allowed to continue.

Kind Regards
