Re: Alia with Okabari of ME, West Burke & Burlington
Thu, June 26, 2008 - 7:51 AMThis looks like lots of fun and I'm planning to go, but I'm confused. The skinnypancake.com website shows both Muddy Boots and Okbari playing at the same time. Will it be one group inside, and one outside? Or first one, then the other, then the first, and so forth? I suppose I can just wait till I get there to find out... -

Re: Alia with Okabari of ME, West Burke & Burlington
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 5:16 AMGosh, the pressure's on - can I remember to bring a camera.... I'll probably remember - thanks for the note, I wouldn't even have tho't about it without it.
I know what you mean about it being work time. I decided there's so few opportunities in VT to see and dance to live Middle-Eastern music that I'm taking the afternoon off. Fortunately, my job's flexible enough that I can do that... -

Re: Alia with Okabari of ME, West Burke & Burlington
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 6:19 AMDon't kill me too hard - I forgot my camera! Aaarggh.
But I can give a verbal report.
The music was EXCELLENT! Oud and tabla for nearly three solid hours. (They only took one short break.) The first part (1+1/2 hours) was indoors due to rain. Alia danced excellently to a couple of extended pieces, and the space was challenging. I came down from my seat on the upper deck to watch - there was very limited seating where one could see her whole performance. And the space she danced in was the main thoroughfare between the entrance and the ordering station/cash register. She did an amazing job of using the space, accommodating the customers, and all-in-all being enchanting.
For the second half, they were able to move outside, which made viewing and dancing a lot easier (though the dance space was now between the sidewalk and the entry door). Alia did one or two extended solos outside, and one where she invited me and (apparently) the only other dancer there (Ruth, who, if I remember right, dances as Yasmina?) to join her for a minute or two. I was so overcome by the heat in that minute, I couldn't believe how Alia kept going. Then at the conclusion of that piece, we did a line dance which several of the audience members joined in. We went up and down the sidewalk a bit, and it was really fun!
I bought two of Okbari's CDs and got permission to use one of their tracks on an upcoming episode of Raqs Radio, so you'll be able to hear a bit of it there, in addition to listening to their mySpace page:

Re: Alia with Okabari of ME, West Burke & Burlington
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 7:29 PMArabella, that was you? Tee-hee! We never met before. So pleased to finally make your acquaintance ;-} Thank you for the glowing review (and thank you for dancing with me, too!). They really are a great band. The indoor part was actually quite challenging, so I am delighted to hear that itl was fun to watch. And yes, that was Ruth and John, and Yasnia happened briefly by while we were outside. Later that evening I was tickled to see Naima and Christopher at Radio Bean (which was a really fun show - I love that place; it's so funky, and the heat had died down, too).
