The Indigos Le Serpent Rouge in Bellingham Friday May 8th at the nite lite!

Le Serpent Rouge: An Evening of Beguiling Dance and Strangely Familiar Music
Le Serpent Rouge is a wily half breed of vintage cabaret and old time music. Internationally renowned belly dance company The Indigo have charmed the hearts of princes and tramps alike, while The Crow Quill Night Owls and The Gallus Brothers have seduced the tympanums of thousands with their arresting interpretations of old timey country blues, jazz and pop. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, this outfit breathes new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in their new knockdown revue.

Current confirmed show details are as follows:

May 7 Sirens Port Townsend WA
May 8 Night Light Lounge Bellingham WA
May 10 Historical Armory Ashland OR
May 14 Broadway Studios San Francisco CA
May 17 Tribal Fest Sebastopol CA
May 20 Tractor Tavern Seattle WA
May 21 The Aladdin Theater Portland OR
May 23 Northwest Folk Life Festival Seattle WA
Please visit www.theindigo.net for more information.

Since the Indigo's inception in 2003, the company and its members have been seen throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Indigo has toured extensively with The Bellydance Superstars, Lollapalooza, The Yard Dogs Road Show, and has performed at a number of festivals including the prestigious Glastonbury Festival. The Indigo has created and defined a new style of belly dance, embracing the roots of middle eastern dance while incorporating an aesthetic reminiscent of early twentieth century cabarets and world's fairs.

The Crow Quill Night Owls are submerged in the depths of old medicine show music like a serpent eating it's own tale,
playing a mix of 1920's jazz, jug band music, ragtime country blues, and minstrel songs gone feral.
Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe sings like the surface noise of an old 78 rpm record and picks a resophonic guitar like a broke down engine on rusty zig-zag tracks. while Windy City Alex shreds the tenor banjo and sings with a voice like piano notes gliding through the spokes of and old bicycle. The band is composed of part old instruments and part old junk, including tub bass, washboard, National steel guitar, banjo harmonicas and kazoos. They've indulged audiences all over the West Coast, from big concert hall to dusty street corner, playing the obscure songs of a forgotten America that sets people's toes to tappin'.

The Gallus Brothers play rollicking good country blues peppered with old rags, pre-war pop songs and dance tunes. Devin Champlin syncopates wildly on a reso-phonic guitar, while Lucas Hicks brings the music to a new level by playing percussion on a suitcase full of bones, bells, and antique tomfoolery. They have played up and down the west coast from festival stage to smoky bar, wooing crowds with their music, their humor, and their willingness to jump on a table, stand on eachother, and juggle while playing a good old tune from way back when.

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Dance at the first one and then head out to Skye's student night!

Come for a series of summer Tribal workshops with Tonje of Belly Belly Hip!
Tonje has been dancing Tribal Style Bellydance since 1998 and is BC's only Gypsy Caravan certified instructor. She has been teaching classes and workshops around the Lower Mainland and throughout BC since 2002.

Tonje will teach basic Tribal vocabulary, building up to more complicated combinations with an emphasis on conditioning and strong Tribal posture. She will be explaining the philosophy behind Tribal Style, cues and what makes this fun dance style unique. Synchronized group improvisation is the cornerstone of Tribal Style Bellydance so there will be plenty of opportunity to dance together in different formations.

Each workshop will build on the others in this series, although they may be taken individually as well.

When: Sundays 1-4PM, June 24th, July 29th, August 12th,

Where: Confidance, 107- 1320 Kingsway Ave., Port Coquitlam

Cost: $35 in advance, $40 at the door, $100 if pre-registered for all three.

I am seriously thinking about getting a new back tattoo... in fact my tattoo artist is drawing it up as we speak! I'm so excited!! I think tattoed dancers look so beautiful. Anytime I watch an inked perfomance i get the bug soooo bad! My only issue is the expense, but you get over that really quickly.
Anyone else around here wanna share about their tattoo wants and desires? Anyone not yet taken the plunge who would like to but is too nervous? Anyone had a really good or really bad experience they wana share??

CHANGES to the HAFLA!!! PLEASE READ!

Hello Everyone,

Well, it's one week from showtime and some unforseen issues have cropped up. Fortunately I have a plan B which may be even better than plan A anyhow! So, here's the long and short of it...

Things have changed slightly. The Aldergrove Kinsman Community Centre made some serious errors in their booking of our event on the Saturday Night, and now they are charging me just under $1000 to rent the space which I have to pay out of pocket, in full, by Monday. They never actually booked the hall (despite my numerous confirmations), and now in order to have any space at all this is what it is going to take... not to mention that the time of our performace wont be able to start until 8pm. So I have had to make alternate arrangements... as follows:

The Student night will now be on SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2007 in LANGLEY. It will now be held at BELUGA BAR & GRILL: 21671 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC, V3A 4H1. The phone number is 604-533-7223. This means we are no longer doing a Potluck, nor is there a ticket charge!! (YAY!!) Just come and enjoy the great food this fabulous venue has on their menu. (The food there is awesome and the prices are VERY resonable!! On Sundays, all their weekly specials apply, so most things are several bucks off, too!) The show will NOW START at 7PM and be done when it's over (no more than 2 hours I should imagine) and if you'd like to hang out and mingle or dance some more you are welcome to do so. It won't be a super late night for those working the next morning... by 9 or 10pm you will be free to venture home! Also, you will still be able to bring all your guests... BUT PLEASE CONTACT ME THIS WEEK WITH YOUR FINAL NUMBERS!!!! THE RESTAURANT NEEDS TO KNOW!

I am so sorry to have to alter these arrangements, but it was NOT in my control and I am not prepared to charge anyone more, nor was I prepared to pay such an outrageous fee for a 2-3 hour event! I think this will work out better for everyone as now you don't have to prepare any food yourselves, nor do you have to pay for tickets! Just come and enjoy a night out with some fabulous dancing and delicious food prepared just for you!

PLEASE, plan to be at the restaurant by 6:30pm so we can start on time (and you can order food...). Any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to email me back or call me. Thanks for understanding! It's gonna rock - this venue is wondeful and I think you will all love it!

Thanks Ladies!!

Skye

For any ladies (and gentlemen) who were lucky enough to get downtown Vancouver last night to partake in Sarita's student night, how blessed you were! The night went off without a hitch, Sarita was fabulously entertaining as MC and the dancing was top notch! I can't say enough about the dancers and the food was, as usual, delicious! Thank you so much Sarita, and Kalypso, for putting this on! I am so glad I got to enjoy the party with everyone! This community is so amazing and how spoiled we truly are to be a part of it all....

Three cheers for Sarita and all her student night performers!

I just wanted to pass on that there are no belly dance classes at the Langley Douglas Rec Centre. They said there used to be but the teacher moved away. Maybe one of you great teachers out there will teach there in the near future! Just thought I'd share.

Just letting everyone know what will be happening at the Dec.10/06 (this Sunday!) Drum Solo & Tribal Duets workshop!!!

I have created a drum solo choreography that can be performed as Tribal styling or with Raks Sharqi variations (since I have done both styles for quite some time). We can all learn some things together - this is one of them! We will try both variations and have some good examples of the difference in styling. Plus, with the duets dancing we will try out different moves/formations with varied styling and musical choices. I find the best ideas come from the unexpected places - it's very helpful to be exposed to different stylings to form new ideas in your own.

And don't forget, I'm bringing my drum to play for everyone as our big finale to the workshop, and since this is a last class for the session, feel free to dress up in 'character' as much as you like (just remember how much we sweat in the warm ups!)

Bring your yoga mats (if you have one) and water!!!

Sign up now and get the last few spaces!!! * Also, check out the discount on my website for those signing up for the winter session at the same time!

The Suhaila Aftermath...

Well, everyone is talking about this past weekend workshop with Suhaila and her lovely ladies Tiffany and Kendra! For those who for whatever reason were not able to make it, don't be disheartened... it looks like it was such a masterpiece experience that there are plans in the works to bring it all back in the near future... so start saving your pennies!!!

For those who were blessed enough to endure the experience (ha!) please make sure you drop Martina a thank you for masterminding the whole thing, from the food and drink to the Saturday night "Silver Frosts Gala Show" and the entire workshop experience. Thanks Marty! What would we do without you?!

I would like to say that obtaining a copy of Suhaila's DVD set (either the 4 "Fusion Series" DVD's or, if your budget is tight, just the 1 "Bellydance Body for Beginners" DVD) would be highly beneficial for us all - not just those in my classes but all of you in the Van area. Suhaila's format is so versatile and user-friendly that we will most likely start seeing it more in our own dances around town and to have these instructional materials would be a super aid in keeping us all in the game and or speaking a similar language... or not (heh). It's just a suggestion... remeber, this is YOUR journey> Take it where you want it...

However, if you are interested in using her format, the best way to order the DVD's is directly from the Suhaila Store online at http://suhailaonlineshopping.stores.yahoo.net/ (and dont forget to get a IT band roller, while youre at it!)

Anyhow, thanks to everyone who made this all possible and hopefully we can all master the "feet double time, down beat on the right, with glute squeezes double time, down beat on the right, with pelvic locks half time, down beat in the back, with undulations up to down, down beat in the front...GO!" oneday! LOL!

love to all!! xoxox <><

Congratulations to Skye and Jacob who are now officialing married. The wedding was beautiful, Skye, you were breathtaking and it really is wonderful to witness two people so consumed and filled with love. Truly awe inspiring. Just a word of caution on the disposable cameras, you might want o prepare yourself for the prints. Hey you leave disposable cameras with three bellydancers and throw a whole lotta wine in the mix, Sistah that is a recipe for disaster...Much love from the CHEETAHS!!! LOL

I have never taken classes, but I have a video that I used to do almost every day for quite a few months, and then my son stopped taking naps. I am hoping in the near future I'll be able to take one of skye's very beginner classes. peace and light to all!

Since I have had a few people mention that they would like to come to my zill workshop on Oct.1, but are going to Skye's wedding on the same day. If there are a number of you that would be interested in attending my workshop, I could try to switch the day, to possibly Oct.15th (if studio is available) - would this work for any of you that mentioned you would like to attend the workshop?

If you let me know asap, then it may be possible to switch.

thanks,

Hey ladies, I am in the midst of putting your choreos together (in between wedding planning lol) and I just wanted to take a mini poll.

1) Would you ladies prefer a modern, funky fusion piece or a more traditional one? (I'm talking mainly music... the dance fits the vibe that the music gives off, typically...)
2) Something fast and furious or something slow and snaky?

Just trying to get a feel for what people want to take with them into thier own repetoire... personally I like it all, so It matters not to me...

let me know what you think...

starting a business, with the support of our local community!

Hello everyone!

Skye has so kindly asked that I post info on my new business on this tribe, so here we go!

I am following a passion, and have started a business making clothing and other things for bellydancers. I'm really excited about it, and wanted to share this with you all.

The business is called WITCHAZEL Designs. I am currently making 3 styles of skirts, and I will be wearing my designs to classes in the fall (I take class with Lava), and anticipate vending at the MEDA Bazaar, so those are two ways you will be able to see what the skirts are like. The other is to view the business profile and the tribe on Tribe, which is updated with new stuff as I make more skirts and get new fabrics.

I will do most of my business through orders. I have 19 fabrics currently available. You just need to choose which fabric and which style, send me an email with your order information, and then *presto* you have a faboo new skirt coming to you in the mail!

So if you have a moment, I encourage you to take a peek at the profile:
people.tribe.net/witchazeldesign
tribes.tribe.net/witchazeldesign

I would love to make you a skirt!

sincerely,
Shana
(a.k.a. Witch Hazel) and Sister #3 from Sisters of Alchemy!

I just wanted to say happy birthday to my dear friend!

She's the reason that we're all so tight. She's the one that started the shopping frenzy (Jamie thanks you!), started the Ya Ya sisterhood and newsletter!

So I guess without you my kids would have more toys, I'd be home more often and even home at a decent hour on class nights.

I guess I'm saying thanks?

Hahahahahaha!!

Hard to believe that we've only really 'known' each other since May. Seems like you've (and my other sisters) have been a part of my life forever! I'm so glad I've met you all.

Enjoy the day. You know how much I love you!

Blah blah blah

*going to go throw up now...*

I'M JUST KIDDING, SHEESH!

Just looked at Skye's pics, I've decided to take up Fire dancing! Skye can you teach me! lol Actually I'm not serious, or maybe I am. Maybe I'll have to settle for a veil with painted flames on it, for now.

Just a short blurb before I head out to the airport to pick up my husband.

So glad I got a chance at the last minute to go to Tribal Quest. It was a huge ordeal to get everything arranged at the last minute, but well worth it.
Especially since when I got home I received news that the workshop In Fargo that I was planning on attending has been cancelled.
The skirt class was way cool, it incorporated some ball room dance stuff and although I found it difficult to keep up I loved it and renewed my love for skirt work which began with Sharon Moore!
The drumming class was totally fun, I now know a Dom and a Tec and a Ka when I hear it and having a lovely smelling charismatic handsome teacher was a bonus too!
The show,,,what to say about the show,,,,let me put it this way,, the hours in the van (which I usually hate) were all worth it just to see the show,,, totally amazing!
The after party,,,,
The drum teacher, good smelling guy was there, had to put my foot down with Amy and tell her in no uncertain terms "Leave that man alone!"
Got to chat a little with Sharon and Gen and that was way cool,,,,,
Amy and I only stopped at one mall on the way home,,,
I will let Amy tell you what she bought,,,
I bought a beautiful necklace from the Urban Gypsy lady (she taught the skirt class) and her DVD because I liked her style so much, and I bought a cool pair of BD pants that Roxanne is gonna want so I am gonna have to be careful not to walk out to my van after class in the dark without protection!

See most of you Wednesday and we will dish more,

Stephanie
P.S. - I was Helping Amy with her luggage when I dropped her off at her house I said "what in the world do you have in this suitcase?" and she said "Sharon Moore!" I was so excited!! I sure hope she has Gen in her other bag!

Hi Skye
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your classes. I really needed these classes to work on my technique (drills), I can see I'm improving. It feels great. Choreo is fun but if you don't have the technique it can look sloppy.

So I was sitting on the bus this morning doing my usual meditation and all of a sudden I got it...your tribe name finally made sense to me...I could hear Martina saying "yaya?" I burst out laughing, which naturally scared the hell out of the guy sitting next to me, considering he thought I was sleeping. I tried to compose myself but every time I thought of "yaya?" I started laughing again. I must have looked like one of those crazy ladies on the bus who laughs and talks to herself. Anyway, the guy next to me changed seats...but my day started off with a good chuckle!

> Just basking in the after glow of an amazing weekend! (should be
> working but anyway,,,,)Just returned from a weekend workshop with Sharon
> Moore and her friend Gen in Kamloops B.C.
> The music, moves, atmosphere, exercise, socializing, purchasing and
> buying some more,,, it's all such a wonderful memory!
> I loved it, loved it, and then I really enjoyed myself! I figured out a
> while ago that Egyptian wasn't it for me, although beautiful I was
> looking for something different and Sharon Moore style is definitly
> "IT". It combines the coolness of tribal with the fun of Bhangra, the
> beauty of Spanish and the community of lead and follow, what more could
> you ask for? Well how about a teacher and assistant that bring you the
> whole package in a style that makes you feel comfortable yet
> challenged at the same time! Those of you who know me know that it is
> rare for me to be at a loss for words but I really cannot explain how
> much this style of dance speaks to what I have been looking for.
>
> Thanks so much to Sharon and Jen,
> your loyal stalker from B.C.

I just wanted to tell you guys how excited I was AFTER Michelle's drum solo workshop last night! Of course during the 2 hrs I was in pain to really be too happy about it. Except for a couple of blunders, I followed most of the steps quickly and it showed me how far I've come!!

What a difference from the fear 2 wks ago!

I also commented to Stephanie that I want to practice the two choreos we've learned so far because it was exciting to walk away after 2 hrs and actually have a piece I could 'perform' if anyone wanted to see what I've been so excited over.

I only wish I can get past the fear of the IMPROV! I hope to get there soon because I think it would completely change the whole experience.

Thank you so much Michelle! I can't wait for your next set of workshops.
Belly Dancing Ya Ya Sisterhood

I mean really, I was only out for a minute or two I am sure. The last thing I remember is walking into a room full of pretty shinny things, tribal things a belly dancers dream room and that was it. After 3 hours in the presence and teaching of Lava entering the sales room of Arabic boutique was just too much! I mean having the ¾ shimmy broken down and made sense to you by the one and only Lava is heady stuff already! Besides Amy had to carry around a drool towel and Cheryl couldn’t stop repeating “Oo-oo look at this!” “Oo-oo look at this!” over and over again until we thought we would have to slap her out of it. This whole situation leads me to believe that those of us new to belly dancing should be warned that too much Belly Dancing euphoria in one day could be dangerous!
And I would just like to point out before anyone blames me for Cheryl being late for her dinner party, that after every “Stephanie we must leave now or I will be late for dinner!” was followed by the same person saying “But wait look at this!”
Included in my belly dancing euphoria hangover this morning is the agonizing thought that I performed lead and follow tribal style dance with Skye our fearless leader! It’s quite hazy but I believe I did take a try at leading with Skye following but really the only memory I have of the whole episode is of thinking “Skye’s behind me and therefore I no longer remember what a hip is let alone a hip bump.”
It is very similar to the affect Lava had on me,,, when she so perfectly taught us the ¾ shimmy that I was able to perform it (slowly) with some success, so much so I looked over at Amy to flash her the, “By George I think I’ve got it smile” when somehow I ended up making eye contact with Lava. It was instantaneous. My ¾ shimmy disappeared to leave me doing what could only be described as a cross between the mashed potato and being electrocuted. I bring extra water. At those times when I can’t decide which one is my right hip I can stop and pretend I need a drink.
Ah,,, good times!
Of course before I left the workshop with Lava I signed up for two more Saturday workshops. (Will da!)
My husband didn’t seem to understand why I would be missing 3 more Saturday’s of work (my busiest and most profitable day of the week by the way) He just stared at me blankly when I kept repeating “LAVA” “L-A-V-A”. Silly man!

F.Y.I. – Not only do shimmies cause problems while typing but vertical chest circles result in many spelling errors.

Ladies who are in my classes, (and those who are not as well) i have access to coin scarves in every color of the rainbow if you need them. Just let me know what color you want (w/ gold or silver coins) and i can get them for you, or direct you to where you can find them!

And, if there are other things i.e. belts, skirts, veils, zills etc. that you might need/want, i can also find them for you out here... just have to say the word!

luv you guys,

Skye

PS I am starting my own custom made line of costumes and accessories this fall. If you have a costume in mind and you want to brainstorm with me, please call me or email me to set up a time to consult.

FYI: The costumes Julie and I wore on the Gala night (both of mine!) I hand made from scratch, just to give you a sample of what can do. I can usually have a bra and belt set done in about two weeks! Thanks. See you all soon!!
