I have got 4 cotton plants growing finally!!! I'm so excited I have had trouble growing them the last few years because I have rats that like to eat my garden goodies & chicken feed. But I found out from Elaine Hallman last year when she came to give us a workshop that cotton plants are poisonous, so the poor rats, must have died (I wouldn't want that). But what I did was open up my gate to let the dogs run around the garden so they could chase off any rodents or make it unpleasant for them to live there. And it seems to have worked some what. So YES 4 cotton plants!
I predict having an over abundance of home grown organic cotton in the near future!

Wed, February 6, 2008 - 3:16 PMYou may also try Guinea hens to run with chickens. They are far more carnivorous and have a wider range at a faster pace than chickens. They are lousy moms though. Kinda like the Brittany Spears of fowl. LOL! You can take their eggs (if you don't eat them) and put them under your chickens to raise and you'll increase the chicks chances. But they will go after mice, rats and even snakes. They are louder, but it is nice if they send up a warning so you don't get bit by a snake....then again if you had snakes, you'd have no rats....LOL! There ya go...get a snake! I'd love to see what your cotton looks like. Take pics! -

Re: A spinner's garden
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 4:01 PMit's easy to grow! I think anyway I've done it before but the plants were eaten by the chickens...they are silly... Yes you grow them from seed. I think in a cooler climate like S.F. you may want to start them under glass or something warm and then you may want to have them in a green house or warm area. They aren't big enough for cotton yet, I grew them in a pot on my front porch. When they do get cotton then there will be lots more seeds. I'll send you some...I have some more around here somewhere...probably with that spinning video I can't find!
oh sometimes I see snakes but not in the garden. We have a problem with rodents and the hawks won't come into the yard because we have dogs...we've upset the natural order of things in our yard... -
