I know some people on this board have been looking for ways to use the Navajo 3-Ply technique when you aren't using a wheel. Someone on Ravelry posted this link to a video of a gal breaking down this technique on a drop spindle ... thought it might be helpful. :)

Re: Navajo 3-Ply on Spindle
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 3:08 PMThat should be very helpful for people wanting to learn Navajo plying.
Andean plying is cool too. -

Re: Navajo 3-Ply on Spindle
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 10:23 AMI was just going to ask this question:
I understand that one source is the ball of yarn, but what is making it twist? I don't have a standing spinning wheel. If I use the charkha I have to use my prehensile tail to turn it.
What am I missing?!
From this video, and from the lesson that Elizabeth gave me, one can use a drop spindle. But, I feel like I need a prehensile tail to turn the spindle while I control the yarn with both hands. What was Eileen doing at the workshop? Did she use the charkha and just stop plying so she could turn it?
It's taken me this long to even figure out how to ask this question! Please bear with me. I've asked this question of Eileen as well so we'll see what she says.
And, to whichever brilliant dancer in Indiana (was it you, Angie?) that told me about plying two yarns from a center pull ball...you have changed my life! Now the brain space that I was giving to frustration over the matter can be used for more altruistic purposes. -

Re: Navajo 3-Ply on Spindle
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 7:39 PMso plying from a center pull ball that way is basically the same as Andean plying.
Um I don't think she used the charka to do navajo ply...I can't remember to be honest, I would use a hand spindle since I don't have a tail either....let me think on how to answer you properly and get back on this.... -

Re: Navajo 3-Ply on Spindle
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 8:39 AMShe wrote back and said that there has to be a spinning source, like the charkha or a wheel or a drop spindle. This the missing link for me and I'm not sure how to make it work. I suspect that when she showed us at the workshop it might have been such a short length of yarn that she just let it twist back on itself, i.e without a formal spinning source.
About plying from the center pull, yes ai get how it is like the Andean plying that you told me about. I feel like I can control it and don't have to use my tail!
