I have Derry a Nubian/Angora goat. She has the long spiral locks that are so pretty. I'm clipping them intact and washing them (carefully) and I plan to make tassels with them as the center and beading and spun yarn around to hold the lock. In my mind this would look great! I am washing as careful as possible, and gosh is she a stinky goat! Phew!
I have dried them and gently combed them. I have got a lot of fibers pulling out but most stay in place, though a bit fuzzy. I have found one place that has Cotswold locks I may try in the future. Anybody try washing and combing and keeping the locks all together? Anything to calm the fuzz and get that pretty curl again?
What were your results? How about Cotswold? Any help is gratefully accepted!

Re: Got goat? Need some brainstorming!
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 4:46 PMI have always wanted to make felt boots with mohair locks for fringe, when I'm an old lady maybe I'll have time.
I'm sorry I haven't done that myself BUT I think you should wash the locks in really small amounts so you can control what happens with them. Don't card it at all, maybe just give the locks a good shake to get the water off & hopefully they will curl up again. I know for my hair, if I brush it, it gets all straight and frizzy, but if I just let it dry and then run my fingers through it it stays wavy. -

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 6:03 PMIt may sound silly-but-what about adding a small amount of anti-friz hair product? It is hair after all and if you aren't going to card it... -

Re: Got goat? Need some brainstorming!
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 10:09 AMThat doesn't sound silly to me at all! When I took a workshop with Norman Kennedy he put spinning wheel oil on some fiber...arrgh! I know Schacht uses motor oil! So hair product can't be that bad!

Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:20 PMHere you go! One is Derry when she was very young, a few weeks maybe and the other was last year at about a year. Derry means red headed in Old Irish, she has a reddish spot on her head.

Re: Got goat? Need some brainstorming!
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 12:23 AMThe pic of her at age 1 is when she was blowing her coat. She was a mess. Her coat is so full right now. I have to get busy and comb her out or I'll loose it all to the pasture again. I found bird's nests all over with her fiber woven in them! -
