Designed by mechanical engineers who live with spinners. I REALLY like this wheel. All the gadgets you have to pay extra for on a traditional or travelling wheel (if you can even get them at all) are standard on this one.

Finally, I have a wheel I'll actually use! My Babe Fiber Starter is in Manhattan starting a new life with a happy family.

It's the Princess Mitts pattern here: http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/pottercraftnews/nov07/pattern.html

The first cable says this, "Slip 3 sts to cn and hold to back (got that part), slip purl st from cn back to left hand needle and purl (this is the part I'm not sure of), knit 2 from cn (got this part, too.)"

What I don't get is this; the 3 sts that get slipped to the cn are K K P, from right to left. When you slip the P back to the left needle, it would be the last st on the cn? Is that correct? I.e., you slip the P off and purl from left to right and then knit the 2K from right to left?

Thanks to whom ever can help with this!

I had no idea that people were doing such fun things with their spinning! I have tried to put beads onto my yarn before, with minimal success but these yarns are incredible. I immediate bought the her book Intertwined, and have been drooling (while sick all day yesterday) over the yarns. And since I felt better today, I immediately died some really dull greyish/brown alpaca that someone gave me a dark blackish plum. Next I'm going to dig up all the mohair & various fibers that people have given me over the years and just keep dyeing them and then I'll start making batts on the drum carder! Not to mention all the beads I've been stashing for years and years and haven't know what to do with! I'm so excited I can hardly believe it!

I have Derry a Nubian/Angora goat. She has the long spiral locks that are so pretty. I'm clipping them intact and washing them (carefully) and I plan to make tassels with them as the center and beading and spun yarn around to hold the lock. In my mind this would look great! I am washing as careful as possible, and gosh is she a stinky goat! Phew!
I have dried them and gently combed them. I have got a lot of fibers pulling out but most stay in place, though a bit fuzzy. I have found one place that has Cotswold locks I may try in the future. Anybody try washing and combing and keeping the locks all together? Anything to calm the fuzz and get that pretty curl again?
What were your results? How about Cotswold? Any help is gratefully accepted!
You can see, it gets all ruffle-y in the front, and I just hate it. For some reason, I never noticed that before I started making it. I have been trying to avoid frogging the whole thing, but I've just been staring at it for months.

I need some ideas. What can one do with a flat knitted circle? How can I salvage this?

P.S. I've already thought of: table-cloth, blanket, shawl. I think a table-cloth would be a waste of some really soft yarn. It could do as a blanket but I'm saving that as a last resort. Ditto on the idea of making it bigger and folding it in half as a shawl.

I've been busy with thread! Still haven't figured out the Navajo 3 Ply technique but I am bound and determined to find a way to manage the thread I'm spinning on the charkha.
In the meantime I am delving into crochet. I will get to knitting eventually, but I've found that I like crochet because it's only one needle and you can't drop stitches. :)
I also bought an Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom, they call it the Knitter's Loom I guess because they want it to appeal to crafters who might knit a scarf in an afternoon with a fancy yarn. I've been too intimidated to thread my Baby Wolf loom, too many years without using has made me forget how (anyone who wants to come to my house and show me is welcome, I'll make tea!) So, the Ashford is perfect for now. Very easy to understand and use.
Speaking of Ashford, I noticed on their website that they have a RETREAT! Gah...can't go this year but I will jump through a hoop on fire to go in 2009 if they offer it again.
OK, the reason that I'm posting: I want to learn how to crochet a star. Like in the crown of a hat, or on a pair of fingerless mitts. A star that is connected to the body of a garment. Can anyone help? Please bear in mind that I am a beginning crochter. I can understand anything if you show it to me but I am pretty low functioning on crochetese directions.
Thanks!! Nice to see you all again.

Then I discovered needle felting about 5 years ago and it became a gateway craft.. I mean, once you have 3 or 4 fleeces just hanging about you may as well dye, wet felt, and spin, right?

I'm also a seamstress by trade so my poor husband has just embraced the fact that in case of emergency we will never be cold and can use the wool and fabric for additional insulation.

We're in the process of possibly moving out to my father-in-law's land-- trying to rezone to subdivide now. They already keep my chickens but once we move we will be able to raise sheep. He's sweetened the deal by building a giant out building for his office. The upstairs has quite a bit of extra space and he asked me at Thanksgiving if I had ever considered weaving. "There would be plenty of room for a loom up there."

Oh, dancing. I've been dancing ATS about a year now and I love it. I took a break in the middle to have my little boy but was back dancing about 3 weeks after his water birth. He's 6 months old today :)

But what I did was open up my gate to let the dogs run around the garden so they could chase off any rodents or make it unpleasant for them to live there. And it seems to have worked some what. So YES 4 cotton plants!
It's nice to work with, a lot like cashmere or camel. You use the soft undercoat from brushing - you don't shear them.
My Salukis have no undercoat to speak of, but my Kangal is a fur machine. I'm brushing out huge clumps of hair. i thought maybe i should save it, but i hardly have time to spin now. Maybe someone else wants it?

Just wanted to say thank you to Elizabeth for the yarn! Sandi handed my two balls of handpun, 2-ply cotton last night! Can't wait to play with it!
Very thoughtful of you.
I wrote to Eileen Hallman for directions on the Navajo 3-ply and here they are. Haven't tried it yet, I hope I can figure it out:
First, it’s a crochet chain stitch.
1. Place your yarn on a table a little distance from you, so that you can easily pull the yarn toward you.
2. Pull the end of the strand toward you in your left hand
3. Make as if you are going to grasp something with three fingers on your right hand, and make a loop around those three fingers on your right hand with the left, folding the yarn back on itself. The loop should be big, but under light tension.
4. Grasp the strand with the left hand so that you have encircled the right; the right hand should be closer to you than the left, and the left now has the strand & it’s beginning in your left fingers.
5. Fold the loop back on itself, away from you, bringing your left hand toward you and moving your right, inside the loop, toward the source.
6. You should see a loop and the strand coming from your yarn source. With those 3 fingers on your right hand, grasp the strand coming from the source and pull it through the loop.
7. Keep pulling your left hand away from the source, and keep pulling the strand through the loop you are making.
8. When your left arm is not long enough, keep hold of what’s in the right hand (you can park the loop on a finger) and let go of the left to allow the yarn to ply back on itself. Attach that yarn to your spindle and keep on making loops and pulling the yarn through.
Once you get going, it’s pretty easy. Keep some tension on both the strand coming from the source and the loop—if it all gets too floppy, you will have trouble doing it.

I cleaned all the critter leavings from my rovings...(I did notice that the more expensive the fiber, the more they seemed to like it, natch,) and I put everything into ziplocks.
Isiris
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A friend and I are both trying to find source
material on learning a Turkish crochet/lace technique.
We both want to learn this Turkish form of crochet
lace called Oya, Oyasi and Oyalari lace, sometimes
called Bebilla lace in Greece. We cannot find any
books on the topic here in the United States.
I am very interested in obtaining a book/s
(preferrably two, one for me, and one for my friend)
on the topic... pattern books. How-to books. Is it
possible for you to find these books for me?
Preferrably with English in them? I am very anxious to
learn this technique, and there are no older Turkish
ladies to teach it (it seems as if it is a "dying" art
form).
I have gone to Amazon.com to try to search it, and
have come up with no results.
I have zero connection with the Greek or Turkish
communities, and was wondering if you were able to
help me find any type of pattern book, how to book, or
anything else that might assist me in learning this
technique [for instance, would you know of any Greek
bookstores or any older women at church or in your
family who might know this technique or know of
someone who does?].
Eagerly looking forward to any replies anyone might
be able to offer on this technique!
for Tribal Caravan-
Anacapa Fine Yarns
4572 Telephone Road #909
Ventura, CA 93003
805-654-9500
www.anacapafineyarns.com
-my personal favorite although it is the farthest of the LYS's in proximity to Tribal Caravan.  Yes, I used to work there and ocassionally teach a knitting class there, but here's why I list it.  It's cozy and everyone there is friendly, there is a great selection of yarns and books and you can sit there for a really long time not buying anything just hanging out and eating red vines and doing your thing.  Oh yeah, VERY knowledgeable staff : )
Village Knittery N More
31139 Via Colinas #201
Westlake Village, CA 91362
818-91-KNIT
805-379-0722
www.villageknitterynmore.com
Very cute 'n cozy, lots of ladies sitting around chattin', knittin' & drinking tea.  Nice store friendly atmosphere.
Eva's Needlework
1321 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. #120
Thousand Oaks, CA 91362
A really good shop, to me not as friendly as Anacapa but knowledgable staff and they have everything.  Eva has a book out Pursenality's or something like that.
FYI:  Elizabeth has helped me and I think my loom is an old Beka rigid heddle loom.
(Warning:  disjointed post.)
The Little Loom House in Louisville, KY recently bought out a yarn shop that had been out of business for a few years and never got rid of the last of the stock.  Friends started weaving a year ago and drug me to the the Little Loom House this Spring.   Well, I had seen the pile of garbage bags and the stuff on the shelves that needed sorting.  A neighbor told me that there was an estate sale a few door away on Saturday, so I ended up purchasing some of those drawer things I hate, and taking them to the Little Loom House.  I had planned to go up there Saturday to check into purchasing a small warping frame.  I took my loom with me, thinking I would use one of the warping frames there and get help winding a new project on the loom.  I figured I be there an hour or so.
Yeah, right. I ended up helping begin the work of sorting and rearranging the mess downstairs.  About a medium sized pick-up truck's worth of rolled fabric and yarn.
Anyway, I finally got to measure out my yarn, and warp the loom.  I'd have wound on, but it was closing time and the Director had plans for the afternoon.  The looks she and two other experienced weavers game me as I warped that thing were interesting.  With the holes in the heddle being so small, I have to use a size 10 steel crochet hook to pull the yarn through.  I don't have the mounting blocks, so I sit with the heddle perpendicular to my lap and start at the middle.  (Pattern?  what pattern?)  Then, I flip it over end to end and do the other half.  I go through the hole, then the slot and pull my yarn even.  Hunting for each end as I go.   I will often put a phone book on either side of the heddle when I put the yarn around the finished end, to the heddle  in place.  This time, I used flower pots on my back porch.  I trimmed the yarn and tied all of my bow knots this morning so I could start weaving another scarf.
Sally Moss, the Director, said I'm supposed to loop the yarn over one end of the loom, even them all up and wind on, THEN go through the heddle.
Any other suggestions?
I went to the basement to see if I had some off-white baby yarn for a weaving project I was thinking about and started realizing how much yarn I actually have.  I think I have a problem.  I have containers in three different, but close locations in the laundry area; plus two bedrooms, the hall closet, assorted places in the living room, and a bag to go to the basement from my neice.  (Half a garbage bag.)
Now, what makes this worse, is that I am debating wheter or not to go back to Hobby Lobby and buy up more black/white/gray Paton's Ci Ci to make another scarf.  It's on clearance.  (See photo of scarf on loom.)  Everyone who has seen the scarf loves it.  I've got a special order for a narrower version that will use the other two skeins I have.
I need to buy another plastic shelf unit at the hardware store (the kind that hold 250 lbs., that I think are worth buying) and try to consolidate some of the yarn in less locations.
How do some of you deal with the out of control yarn situations?
My question is about buying a new heddle.  This thing, heddle size unknown, is a real pain to warp.  The holes are so tiny, I have to use a size 10 steel crochet hook rather than a slaying tool to warp the thing.  I tried other hooks, but it takes something this small to work.  Are there other styles of heddles, in other brands that will be easier to warp?  I mostly want to use the thing to make scarves.
Also, what is the reccommended size of heddle to scarves?  Is there a way to measure what I have so that I can figure out the dent?
If you like pets better than people, or need to work on something your cat will approve of, try a pet blanket. Blankets make the animals more comfortable and hence more adoptable. Cat blankets should be machine washable and measure about 12”x 18”. Dog blankets should be more like 18” x 30”. This is a great way to try out a new yarn, use up the stash, play with stitch patterns etc.
I have a question. Being new to cotton spinning, I'm not clear on the difference btwn sliver and roving. As I remember it in the wool spinning world, roving was the super combed fleece that looks like what is called sliver in the cotton world. I could be remembering wrong, it has been 20 years! Or is sliver aways the super slick ready to spin fiber and roving is the rougher stuff that you card by hand?
And, how is sliver produced?
Thanks.
Right now I cannot wait to go to the Maryland Sheep and Wool! Are  any of you going?
I am hoping someday to graduate to a wheel. I hint at every birthday, so who knows this could be the year they have a couple months yet.
Well, here I am now with you and I am so happy to meet you all... although typing and spinning will be quite a trick!
