last night i taught a bellydance workshop for 20 teenagers at one of our libraries. it was a blast! they were having so much fun, and they got it, for the most part. ( if only i had been taught bellydance as a teen---) what a great way to express and relieve some of that teen angst and be able to shake it out! has anyone else done this, taught specifically to teens? it was very energizing and empowering!! and so much fun to tell them "I'm a librarian...but I'm also a bellydancer!"
we have several dance things going on for teens this week-- i'm looking forward to the others now!

Re: teen read week bellydance!
Fri, October 20, 2006 - 7:29 PMThat's awesome, Angela!
I LOOOOOOVE teen programming! I haven't done a teen workshop, but I have read about some other libraries doing it, and I'd love to lead one myself! In Ann Arbor one of the at-risk community centers hosted a teen BD workshop, and it had great success-- so much so that they wanted to hire my friend to teach the class on a regular basis!
And you're right-- I wish I had had BD as a teen, too. It would have been so great for my self-esteem and body image. I've always loved dancing, but ever since I had to give up ballet, have had no confidence and no outlet. Wouldn't it be great if BD was taught to little kids and just as standard and acceptable an option as tap, jazz, and ballet?

Sun, October 22, 2006 - 7:38 AMTeen programming would be awesome. I wish I had a chance to do it. Maybe I should teach a workshop in my Engineering library. Haha, I can just see those engineers trying to shimmy. >:O)
Wish I'd started bellydance as a teen too. Congrats on your program. You'll probably start a whole new generation of bellydance obsessed women. :)
