Hi everyone! Sorry I've been away for so long.
As some of you know, I fell in love with a Welshman online back in the summer of 2005. We visited back and forth, and in the spring of 2006, he proposed. I finished my MLIS at Wayne State in August 2006, and my then fiance flew over and we drove cross country to my home back in Los Angeles. He flew back to Wales in September, and it took me until late November to get my visa together. I flew to Wales on December 1, 2006, and I've been here ever since.
What I thought would be an easy process proved anything but. We had a quiet Register Office ceremony mid-March, and my work visa didn't come through until the end of April. I had a library temp job lined up (through a contact I made at a Welsh library conference I attended), but wasn't able to start until late May. In the second week in June, my mom flew out to Wales for the first time, and at the end of that week, my husband and I finally got our own place. A week later we had a formal handfasting with all of the Welsh family and friends to celebrate our wedding.
I've been applying to every job under the sun-- library jobs, development jobs, community, youth-- you name it. No one would even consider me for an interview. My local library system where I've been temping told me that they wouldn't hire me full-time until April 2008. But then I received an invitation to give a presentation and be interviewed.
And it was a huge success! So my new job is Music Librarian at Cardiff University. I'll be in charge of the library collection, space, and organisation, and will develop an information literacy program for the School of Music. Other than that, the position is wide open for any special projects like creating an archive of student performances, or expanding an international collection to reflect the School of Music's international population.
And one of the coolest things? They've got two special centers for Ethnomusicology-- Eastern European Music, and Middle Eastern Music!
Yipeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

Wed, October 24, 2007 - 6:46 AMThanks everyone! I'm so excited!
And now that I'll actually be a working librarian and am getting back into dancing, I might have new things to contribute to this board! ;-)
Angela-- There's a Welsh language program through the university, so hopefully I'll be able to wrangle some free lessons there. Will also start working on my Chartership (it's this weird process to become an "official professional" through the UK version of ALA), so it's possible that I may take some library extension courses as well for professional development. Something I've already mentioned to them is perhaps pursuing archiving. :-D
