Our troupe is hosting its first ever workshop . Do any of you have experience to share? Or as a workshop attendee, is there anything that makes or breaks a workshop for you? We're a pretty detailed bunch (I'm the lone librarian, the other six are aeronautical engineers), so we're trying to cover every detail, but there's always something... Please share & if you're in the Dallas-Fort Worth area March 24 & 25, 2007...sign up! Our tribe is finally up.. Johara Dance Ensemble and our troupe leader is Nadirah Johara. Our website is www.joharabellydance.com

Re: Workshop tips requested
Wed, January 17, 2007 - 5:31 PMour troupe will be doing the same this summer... early registration is the tip I was given-- get people to commit early. And don't overcrowd the room-- take only as many registrations as your space can handle.. it is a drag to go to a workhsop and have it be so big that you can't hear/see the instructor. Good luck, and I'll be watching this space for more tips! -

Re: Workshop tips requested
Thu, January 18, 2007 - 5:02 AMI loved the Zafira workshop I attended 1.5 years ago. The had one instructor on a stage in front, and then had another one at floor level on the side or in the back for when you turn around, and then a third roving instructor. Worked like a charm.
Just like library presentations, bonus points go to handouts-- the choreography written out, some sort of historical background, translation of the song being used, and maybe a glossary of terms. Also, people generally make an extra buck or two if they have CDs of the choreography music to sell at the end of the workshop.
Something that's not for everyone is videos. Personally, I've loved watching them in the past-- either seeing a professional presentation of the same choreography, or in the case of a workshop with Aegela on Turkish v. Egyptian dance, a classic example of the genre. I think the key is just to make sure that the clips are fairly short so that no one loses their warmed-upedness.
My favourite workshops are those that deal with a specialized theme, especially nitty-gritty technique of a particular style/region with all of the history thrown in. "How to do your own choreography", "Breaking down and learning zyll patterns", etc. Most of the dancers I used to study with were especially interested in workshops that dealt with costuming and make-up, culminating in professional photos. -

Re: Workshop tips requested
Sun, January 21, 2007 - 8:01 AMDitto the handouts!! I can't survive without a handout, and a CD available for purchase. I think the most irritating thing I've ever run across was a teacher who taught a choreography to a piece of music that was no longer in print, and you couldn't get it ANYWHERE.
