My name is Erik and I am from Kalamazoo, Mi. I work at the Portage District Library in Portage, Mi. I work as a librarian aide II and have been working here for 1-2 yrs.

I have been dancing now for 2-3yrs and perform with the troupe I helped found "Boheme". We have been together since Dec. of 2007, so we are young but not without experience. We are actually getting ready for a luncheon show here at the library for the volunteers. This will be our first show with 6-8 performers in our ranks...so we are excited.

I am glad to have found this place, it's too great!

I already have some ideas from the "games in class" thread, and my tribe search came up with only a few discussions on this. (no boolean searching here!) anyhow-- any ideas for some quick, fun things to do with a gang of 7-10 year old girls? this will not be an ongoing class, just a one-off demo kind of thing for their annual sleepover.

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been away for so long.

As some of you know, I fell in love with a Welshman online back in the summer of 2005. We visited back and forth, and in the spring of 2006, he proposed. I finished my MLIS at Wayne State in August 2006, and my then fiance flew over and we drove cross country to my home back in Los Angeles. He flew back to Wales in September, and it took me until late November to get my visa together. I flew to Wales on December 1, 2006, and I've been here ever since.

What I thought would be an easy process proved anything but. We had a quiet Register Office ceremony mid-March, and my work visa didn't come through until the end of April. I had a library temp job lined up (through a contact I made at a Welsh library conference I attended), but wasn't able to start until late May. In the second week in June, my mom flew out to Wales for the first time, and at the end of that week, my husband and I finally got our own place. A week later we had a formal handfasting with all of the Welsh family and friends to celebrate our wedding.

I've been applying to every job under the sun-- library jobs, development jobs, community, youth-- you name it. No one would even consider me for an interview. My local library system where I've been temping told me that they wouldn't hire me full-time until April 2008. But then I received an invitation to give a presentation and be interviewed.

And it was a huge success! So my new job is Music Librarian at Cardiff University. I'll be in charge of the library collection, space, and organisation, and will develop an information literacy program for the School of Music. Other than that, the position is wide open for any special projects like creating an archive of student performances, or expanding an international collection to reflect the School of Music's international population.

And one of the coolest things? They've got two special centers for Ethnomusicology-- Eastern European Music, and Middle Eastern Music!

Yipeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

Woohoo! I'm going to be the corporate librarian for a big corporation. Which comes as a complete and utter shock, BTW. When I applied for the position I figured there was no way in hell they'd hire me, since I come from a purely academic background. But they sent me an offer yesterday! I guess there's hope for people with classics degrees after all.

FYI-- they said the reason they hired me was 1) my knowledge of preservation and conservation (I wouldn't have picked that as being high on their priority list since it wasn't in the job description) and 2) My familiarity with searching online databases such as Lexis-Nexis and Dialog. 3) My familiarity with using an offsite storage contractor.

Interviewing for a corporate librarian job is a lot different from the academic and museum positions I've interviewed for. The corporate interviewers don't ask any of those tricky philosophical questions--they're way more short and to the point. And if you do go into a corporate interview, drop the library slang because you probably won't be interviewed by anyone with an MLS--and they won't know what the hell you're talking about. ;O) The person who interviewed me was an engineer. The whole atmosphere of the interview was WAY casual--no two day interview process like in academics. And you can negotiate on salary, which is great. I was scared to death when I went into that interview, but it was one of the most casual I've ever been on.
I'm talking about dancer names. After deciding against having one for myself, I ended up using one last night (my teacher organized a beginner night at a local club-- first time doing a solo, improvising, and dancing to live music, all in one!) simply because I was worried that there was no way the announcer guy would be able to pronounce, let alone remember my name.

Well, what are your thoughts on this, guys? In terms of being a service professional, how important do you think it is to keep your dance identity separate and isolated from the rest of you? I have heard that one good reason to have a dancer name is to cut down on stalking, and after reading the creepy patron thread, that does put it into a more poignant context. So what say you all?

I worked 35 hours a week, and was always done by 3:30, plus had an ungodly amount of vacation and early-leave days. It's very easy to make time for all sorts of fun activities in that type of environment.

Frankly, even if only 20 of those hours are spent on the reference desk, it still sounds a bit exhausting, and like it might be tricky to find the time and energy to keep the dance thing going where I want it to.

Yesterday I had a guy come in with the kids from hell. I work in a rare book room, mind you. One of the little brats pulled a rare book off a cart and started stomping on it. After I nearly had a coronary I told him to keep a better eye on them, but he didn't seem to care much. I was thinking about asking my boss to write up a special policy for the reading room, but when we've tried to crack down on bratty kids in the past, it hasn't gone over well with the parents. However, other rare book depositories ban kids altogether, so i don't think this is unreasonable.

Parents these days--geez. My mom and dad never let me run through the library screaming bloody murder.

So tell me, do you all find it fairly satisfactory? Do find that people appreciate you for the most part? Are there any aspects of the job that you didn't expect/ care for? I'd really like to get a feel for this line of work; I am currently studying to be a doctor and I think I am just going to end up with ulcers, not a medical degree. I feeling like I am trying to fit somebody elses mold and and I think that living in a world of information would satisfy my book-lust.

Any feedback would be terrific! Thank you!

Something akin to being a librarian under The Patriot Act. Combining all four elements makes me feel extremely responsible and also connected to present events in a way that I just don't think I would feel otherwise.

Do any of you ever experience the same thing? I have so much respect for Middle Eastern culture, and for the values of my own culture, while at the same time feel so much worry and antogonism towards rising fundamentalism in both groups. In a way, I'm a representative of what each group hates in the other, and now I've also become something that's looked down on within those groups.

I can't imagine that Arab fundamentalists are too thrilled with the idea of white non-muslims dancing their dances to their music while scantily clad, just as that nimrod from the Boston Globe and the thugs he represents aren't any too pleased with librarian muck-raking.

Last year, it was really cool because the big annual Ann Arbor reads was a book called Leo Africanus, and so throughout the winter and spring they hosted roundtables on Middle Eastern culture, had food-tastings, henna painting for the kids, Middle Eastern music concerts, and a local folkloric troupe perform. Unfortunately, they didn't do much expansion to the dance materials collection.

For one of my classes, I made a pathfinder, a collection analysis, and materials recommendation all for bellydance based on our library I've been pretty timid about taking them to the Adult Services people, though. I don't want to come off as... I don't know... too fanatic, I guess.

The thing is that Ann Arbor has about four or five BD teachers with just as many schools and troupes. My teacher alone leads five or six classes, plus myslef and another student are going to be leadind special mini classes as part of our teacher's studio. Put us together with all of the other teachers and their students, and that's a lot of people doing bellydance in Ann Arbor.

I'd also really like to get my teacher or our troupe booked for a programming engagement sometime this summer, but once again, I don't want to be a geek, especially a self-serving geek.

So I don't know. What do you all think about this? Have any of you done anything to bing more bellydance to your library? Has it been met with any success? What were the major roadblocks?

I have a bunch. I don't know if I'm a freak magnet or if all libraries attract wackos. Here is a random sampling.

1. Yesterday, this really cute guy came in. I get nervous around really good looking men sometimes. Anyway, so as I'm there talking to the man-candy, I hear this loud vibrating noise coming from his pocket. Now, he was wearing kinda baggy pants with large pockets, and it appeared that the vibrating was coming from er....the crotch area. After it happened three more times, I could barely keep a straight face. Apparently, he has the loudest vibrating cellphone I have EVER seen, and he wouldn't turn it off. He would just let it vibrate on.

2. Last year a woman came in with a giant stuffed dummy, and told me to address the answer to her reference question to him, since he was the one who was wanting to know. Every time I tried to talk to her, she would screech, "Talk to Bob!"

3. And then there's the vice president of a very successful international ad agency, who comes in to do research in jeans and several layers of shirts. That in itself isn't too oddball. But he suddenly proclaimed, "OH MY GOD, I am so sweaty. I feel like I'm having male hot flashes," and then proceeds to start taking his clothes off. He gets down to a tank top and really tight pants. Ugh. He was seriously hairy, and it wasn't a pretty sight. Then he starts rubbing his chest and talking about how hot it is in the reading room. I wish I were making this up.

Anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?

Bellydance videos are so expensive, and because a lot of them aren't available on Amazon, most libraries won't buy them. Wouldn't it be cool to get people to pitch in money, and maybe have a few fund-raisers, and start a bellydancing library for your community?

CDs, books, magazines, DVDs-- hell, even posters, could all be slowly accumulated, and then available for short-term loan to anyone in the community. Maybe they could pay a one-time card fee of $10. And whenever troupes do those gigs where if you split up the earnings, it'd come out to $3 a person-- that money could go to funding the library and building the collection. Or maybe even encourage people to just donate a percentage of their tip money. You might even be able to build some sort of partnership with an ME studies program at a local college.

If I were going to be in this area for longer than six months, I would totally try to start something like that up. As it is, I might see if I can get something like that going in my area of Wales. :-)
