I also am not too thrilled with how it jiggles when I dance. I mean, no, not give the kids the dirty ones the dogs have had, but I found a really cool squeaky iguana at the store today for three bucks and when you squeeze it (and my nearly 5 month old can get it to work) it's tonge and tail uncurl. I've got squeaky rubber ducks for my almost 3 y/o and he has a hard time sqeaking them, the doggie toys work, but I've got this little voice in the back of my head going, "OMG, you're giving THAT to your kids?!"

I have done some research on what to do and what not do during pregnancy. However, most of the advice seems to relate to once you are actually showing - 2nd & 3rd trimester. Any advice on the first trimester? I read that you should not shimmy during pregnancy. Shimming is something that I have to practice or I seem to lose the natural feel, so I am a bit worried about not shimmying for that long.....I know that the first three months is a very vulnerable period of time despite the fact that hardly anyone would notice I am pregnant. I have had three children before but I did not belly dance back then....(it has been eight years!!)

Hi! I am new to this tribe. I have read many posts on hip shimmies throughout tribe as well. I have a few questions. The first is related to what is the average length of time to progress from one level to the next? I know that everyone is different and this is not a question that can be answered with 100% accuracy, but I am really feeling demotivated by the time it is taking me to progress....I have been taking classes off on on for two years now. I have to admit that I have not been consistent. The usual ten week session - one class a week that I enroll it usually turns out to be 5-6 classes that I make and then I skip an entrie session or two and then start up again. I have three boys at home - actually count that four including my husband..LOL...Their needs and activities are a difficult balance to my need to practice this dance. I also, despite my investment in numerous belly dancing videos, do not have a chance to practice at home. It is difficult for me to go the washroom on my own, let alone try to practice a video without an interruption! So, now two years later, I am at a level where I am somewhere between a beginner and and intermediate - not really fitting in either one. I know my lack of consistency and practice has influenced my progression, but I also feel that hip shimmying has also affected my progression. My main obstacle is shimmying. It is ironic that when I first starting taking classes, I thought the hips would be the easiest to master. As it turns out, my hips are my enemy and my upper body is my hero. I just can't keep a consistent hip shimmy. Especially when I start trying to layer a hip shimmy with another hip move or travelling with it. I start feeling very jerky and akward. It is soooo demotivating!! I have been told by my teacher that I sit low when I shimmy, which is more like a tribal shimmy??? However, this is the position I feel most natural to shimmy in. Yes, my kness are pumping, but it actually feels like the movement is most powerful and is perhaps generated from the thighs rather than the kness. It is a loose and not tight feeling. Is this wrong? I keep reading posts where the hip shimmies should come from your kness and not the thighs. Also, when I try the egyptian hip shimmy, which I understand to be more of a straight leg shimmy, but again powered by the knees - that one is really difficult for me.....any advice??? Also, last but not least, when I try the suhaila hip shimmy powered by the glutes, my shimmy tends to be very small. I was told this is natural until the squeezing of the glutes becomes more natural to my muscles. However, when I squeeze my glute, I am also feeling that the squeeze is in the back of my leg and extends down to the knee...therefore, it is not just the glute only that raises the hip??? Please help Demotivated but trying to be Positive :-) and Shimmy confused!

The child whispered, " No."
Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?" " Yes.”
"May I talk with her?"
Again the small voice whispered, " No.”
Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, "Is anybody else there?"
"Yes," whispered the child, " a policeman ".
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?"
"No, he's busy ", whispered the child.
"Busy doing what?"
"Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman," came the whispered answer.
Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, "What is that noise?"

"A helicopter " answered the whispering voice.
"What is going on there?" demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.
Again, whispering, the child answered, " The search team just landed a helicopter.”
Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"
Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle... " ME."

I have a 4 year daughter...Sofia Isabella. She started belly dancing in the womb and hasn't even considered stopping! I teach a lot of classes, mostly for adults...But I have questioned if Sofia would be better of taking classes from another teacher. It is so difficult to separate myself from being "mom" to being "teacher". I have so much more patience with anybody else's kids.....but my own! Yikes!!!

If I put her in classes with someone else, what would be a good age? I didn't start belly dance classes until I was 18 y/o....Should I wait another year or two? Should I co-teach her? Should I allow her to make belly dance her own thing without any involvement from me?

Lots of questions...I know. But any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Jingle All The Way was held on December 14, 2006 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center in Palmdale, California through the Desert Communities Chapter of MECDA. This yearly event is done solely as a charity event to raise funds and collect toys for the youth in our community who are in need of assistance.

This year's theme was "Christmas Around the World" and the dancers chose a country to represent fusing belly dance with other countries' music and/or dance styles to celebrate a global holiday.

There are three mother/daughter performances in this clip:
Julia & Zoe (1st on the clip)
Vichelle & Genie (7th & 5th on the clip... they perform separately)
Dana & Alyssa of Desert Lotus Tribal (me & my daughter...the two in the center position...10th on the clip)

However, he did say that I could teach some day if that's what I want to do. I am currently working towards my degree in Fitness and Human Performance. Basically I plan on becoming a fitness trainer. I still have a couple years left before I will actually graduate with my Bachelors, and once I'm a trainer I should be able to get a job as just that at one of the local fitness centers.

Once I've been bellydancing for a while, though, I would really like to teach since there is no one in my area that offers classes. I was just wondering if any of you have even heard of someone teaching bellydance who has never actually performed in front of a crowd. Would you take classes from a fitness trainer who had been practicing bellydance for a long time and was good at it but didn't have any performance experience?

I pretty much just want to know if I am being realistic with my goals. And besides, I want to be able to share bd with others. Since my husband doesn't want me performing, this is my only option that I can see.

Now it will be months before I can pick her up. Since I am allowed to sew, I was wondering what y'all considered must have costume pieces, so that I can best judge how to use my time. Also, if you have any ideas for me to continue to dance with baby Rose after I recover, I would welcome them!

I am a 30 (almost 31) year old belly dancer living in the Shelbyville, Indiana area. I am currently instructing beginning and intermediate level classes in this area. I have been dancing and performing for over 5 years, and I am alumni of the Troupe Taleeba Performing Company from Fort Wayne, Indiana. My real name is Amy Phillippe, but I dance under the name Ambriehl Saroj.
I have three children-a 7 year old daughter, Jasmine Natane (pronounced (Nuh-TAWN-ee), a 5 year old son, Raiden Acheta (pronounced Uh-KAY-tuh) , and a newborn baby that I gave birth to 19 days ago-on August 11th, named Saber Phoenix Tyree. I am married to an engineer, a Native American man named Jason.
I am currently recuperating from the birth of my baby, and slowly getting back into the swing of exercise/dancing.
I performed up until I was 7 months pregnant with this baby, and I taught up until 36 weeks pregnant-and gave birth at 36 1/2 weeks. :-)
I am glad that I found this tribe...hope to share a lot with other dancing mothers. :)

I worry that I'll be in a class with teenagers and won't fit in with all of the thin and gorgeous athletic and flexible young people although the instructor assures me this won't happen. I wonder if she realizes I haven't been very flexible for awhile now. Hmmmm. My last child left for college last year. However, I still do things for my three children and now my elderly mother who moved in next door. I work full time. So, my life is busy even if I don't have small children at home. I'm new to tribes, new to joining one and not sure what to do or what I am supposed to do. Aye! I want to learn to Belly Dance, I have always wanted to learn but had no time. I want to do something different and fun. Am I crazy? Too old? Who knows. I guess I'll step out into the unknown and see what happens. Advice welcome.

I'm successful at it sometimes and when I am it feels really right. Then there are times when I'm last on the totem pole to get what I need and that usually coincides with an important performance. It's then that I wonder why I'm doing this to myself.

I've been a professional peformer/instructor for 13 years. I have a son who is 6 and a baby girl who is turning 1 tomorrow. I adore my two kids and my husband too. We have a great time together. But then I'm also in love with teaching this beautiful dance and performing it when and where I can. I'm temporarily located in Vancouver, British Columbia and am heading back home to Texas in December.

Not sure if anyone has the magic answer to balancing it all or it's just a luck of the stars.
