Hello, first time poster here. My name is Julie and I am Carmels sister. Carmel has sent me a link to this tribe as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis too, diagnosed just over a year ago.
It's good to see something like this exists!
I hope to share and learn!

I am guessing that the r/a must be inherited. So sorry, I'll see if I can research a little on r/a. Welcome to the group and hugs to the both of you.

Thank you so much for your welcomes. RA is inherited yes but we have no known 'others' in the family so far! Still iIguess someones got to start it off!

Carmel and I have been dancing for 9 years now-we started off with Classical Egyptian and then went onto cabaret and now also do Tribal Belly Dancling. We've just recently decided to form a duet called Maturity so that we can choreograph our own dances using the moves that we can do without too much pain! We've done 3 performances so far of the one dance we've devised and it went down really well! We're currently working on the second one.

Welcome to you Julie. I think this tribe is my favorite. It just helps to know you aren't alone.

I am still tired this morning and my neck is still stiff, I had hoped after my surgery in Dec I would be feeling great by now. I do see my Orthopedic Doctor next week, but I am not as good as I was after my first surgery.
But I am going to take a hot shower and make myself get moving. After all the sun is shining here today and the temps are rising. The say it will get to 78 today.

I am feeling much better today.

I started working with a personal trainer in January to try to strengthen my hips. It had been going very well. The time before last my trainer changed my exercises though. Bad news. I was in so much pain I couldn't hardly move and started having very painful steps on my left hip - the more deformed one.

It has taken two weeks to heal, but my workout yesterday was just right. My trainer factored in the damage and we scaled way back. Today I have the normal muscle feel of having used them, but not having damaged myself.

My husband and dancing sisters have had their papa and mama claws out. They want me to stop and were feeling protective of me, but I think my trainer has adjusted to my needs now.

You know, I couldn't tell at all that I was getting so hurt as it was happening. Scary realization.

There are all levels of trainers out there. Not all are qulified to work with someone who has injuries.
My first trainer was just OK. Luckily, I had to reschedule one day and wound up with my current trainer who is great! He has helped me work on my left hip aductors/abductors which have had little ROM for years. We started slow and have gradually added weight and tried various equipment.
There are several ways to work different muscle groups and sometimes one is better for you than others. I really listen to my body. I noted a particular machine stressed my ankles while working my quads. We now work the quads differently. You have to listen to your body while working out and your trainer has to really scrutinize your technique. Even the slightest varience in execution or too much increase in weight can over stress a joint. The important thing is to be patient, work slowly, gradually, focusing on proper technique and reporting the instant something doesn't feel right.
Good luck and don't give up.

I am new to this tribe and may i say its an excellent tribe I dont have a major disability (although my husband does)like some of you brave ladies but i suffer from numerous irritating maladies such as arthiritic knees hayfever asthma and eczema migaines bipolar disorder and allergies
What i find depressing is that i can be all geared up for dance class in the morning and by evening im so tired i cant bring myself to get off the sofa and end up missing class.
