Spinal Fusion

topic posted Fri, February 1, 2008 - 5:52 AM by  Darkdove
I just had a second cervical fusion surgery in Dec 2007 due to a car accident. So I have not been dancing since last July when it happened. It has really taken a toll on me too. I have belly danced since I was 16 years old, o.k. that's over 32 years now.
This bone fusion takes 6-12 months to fuse solid. The first one fused solid in 5 months. But I started dancing a month after the first surgery.
I went to the Orthopedic surgeon last week and he said I can start dancing again. No neck slides and head spins. So I have to learn to restrict my head movements. No hair tossing or head banging for me. But at least I can still dance.
During my down time I finished hand beading a new costume for myself, part of my healing process. Pics are in my profile.

Now time to get dancing and see how it goes. Carefully I might add.

    Hello, now I found out about your pain factor. I imagine you are in desperate pain. I'm so sorry that you had have to go through this. I have a student who is your age, who went through her second back surgery in Dec. I'm hoping it gets better for you. I do sleep on a Nikken magnetic mattress and I think it has helped me throughout these years .

      As an energey healer, I have problems with magnets and electricity. I do wwell and take no pain meds. I just get stiff neck and cannot lift anything heavy or do many neck moves now.
      This was my second fusion as a result form a car accident. So it is more difficult now. And two beautiful scars on my throat too. ;~}
      Well, I guess it could always be worse.
      I do energy pain release techniquesfor myself just like I do on my Craniosacral clients.

    I'm glad you are going to be able to start (carefully) dancing again.

    Try not to worry about the scars. They are just a part of us. You are beautiful with and without.

    Best wishes to you.

            I have rods in my back, so I have some understanding of the difficulties of spinal FUN. It's hardest for me to restrict myself from things that I want to do or used to do. But you are a better woman than I am, so you'll probably have no problem keeping things where they should be for performance and practice.

            Enjoy your new found dance freedom

    Do you find that moves are either more difficult to perform, or more painful when do them?

    I've only had the one surgery (fused three thoracic vertabrae) and have been told that need to have two more in the cervical fused at some future point (I hope not for a long long while yet...). But certain flexibility issues have arisen, and there is significantly increased pain after a long performance. I do find that stretching out/warming up more than usual just prior to a performance helps (minimally).
    But not gonna give up my dance - as it has helped me more than anything the doctors provide...
