Getting started again

I started this tribe, A Fire in the Belly, because I loved the tribe community and saw it could allow for things to happen in the bellydance community I love, and we could make a difference together.

In 2006, I created a fundraising performance for the Washington Street Community Center, with the huge help, support and performances of The Cairo Moon Dancers and other local bellydancers. It was called A Fire in the Belly: A Community Movement with Passion. I was planning on making it the first annual event to bring the beauty and empowerment of bellydance to a new community.

But I lost confidence and momentum. And I hid out, not going to local bellydance classes or haflas, to spite myself. Thankfully, I have recently been re-inspired. I have started a couple of new tribes and taken on meeting new people. New members have sparked a new fire.

I realized there is a lot of opportunity out there to spread the joys of bellydance, have fun, and contribute to a good cause. My friend Joanna, because of her pics from Bolder Boulder opened me up to the possibility of groups of bellydancers at runs and walks. Who is up for either whooping it up for the walkers and runners, OR going for the walk in bellydance costumes? That seems like it could be a lot of fun.

We could also organize volunteering time together at any of the local non-profits. I have been thinking for a while about finding out what's out there and volunteering with my son, but because of a message from my friend, Amanya, I have been thinking it would be more fun and make a bigger difference if groups of us come together in our support. Over the next few months I am going to look into what is available in Denver area and I will share it here.

I intend to look into the events and groups in the Denver communities and to keep you posted, and I invite you, in other communities, to join in the game.

Some of the groups that offer volunteer opportunities that I am interested in are:

girlsindenver.org
familiesfirstcolorado.org
ccadv.org
familyresourcecenters.info
metrodenverpartners.org
bgcmd.org
womensbeanproject.com
smart-girl.org
teensinc.org
project-yes.org

I know there are other organizations out there and I look forward to your input.

I believe the Dumb Friends League does a run/walk with your pets that helps to raise funds for their shelters. I am a big advocate for our pets, because overpopulation and unwanted animals is a big problem for our furry friends. Maybe some of us would want to help out there or dance on the sidelines etc? I have a friend that participates every year, I am sure I could get information from her if anyone else is interested.

Oh, and maybe we could join forces with the Shimmy for the Cure ladies. I was very disappointed in the lack of turnout to the show over the summer, but maybe it was because the Tribal movement was not very well represented? That is an important group that seems like it could use some more help,

    See you tonight I hope,

    Dian

I completely believe in giving to the community.
Alot of people don't know this, but my job at the boulder creek festival is completely volunteer.
I give back to the dance community in that way.
I've been doing it 8 years.
The festival has been wonderful to me, and it is a fantastic event for all dancers.
It has been a HUGE success.

We are already working on ways to get a better turnout at Shimmy this year. We feel that the fear of where to park was one issue.....Selayma and I were talking about that and some other ideas too....

Small turnout but the show was still great.....

Tell me more. I would love to know more about helping Dumb Friends League, the Women's Bean Project (haven't made the opportunity to look into that yet), and am looking forward to next year's Shimmy. . .
