Who's your mama?

No really. Who is your bellydance mama? The one who birthed you into this crazy world? Whether you like 'em, love 'em, or run quickly the other way from 'em, you do have to acknowledge that they helped you find this amaing place.

Heather Stants www.urbantribaldance.com/ whom I had the great pleasure of performing with last night! Really, I can't say how cool that was! And then we boogied the night away for the second time in a week. Yip!
Seriously, I did A LOT of research before I took my first dance class. When I decide to do something (and it always takes me awhile to make up my mind) I do it all the way. And I want to learn it right the first time. And her style and grace and funkiness where just what I was looking for. I did not make my decision casually (for any of my teachers). It was definately the right decision for me!

Shirley Thompson of "Jewels of the Desert" birthed me and I owe so much to this lady. Sooz talks about life lessons, ya Shirley gave me some of those too. Love you Shirley!

My first teacher was Sarah Chebaro (Belgium). She was a friend of my sister and the first time I saw her perform I was stunned. She has a lot of stagepresence and is a great (Egyptian and bellybreaks) dancer: www.sarahchebaro.be

        What a fabulous thread! :)
When I danced Cabaret, my momma was Petitie Jamila.
Then I took a tribal workshop with Rachel Soto and SOOZ, they are the ones that turned me on to tribal. The next week I was in Megha Gavin's class and have been there ever since. Sooz totally inspired me to go tribal, such beauty and sweetness and I fell in love with the idea of improv after I watched Devadasi perform together. I thank her often for that :)
I call Megha my tribal mommy, SOOZ "birthed me" and Megha is raising me :) heehee

My first Belly dance teacher was Cabaret beauty Zaheea of Sactown, for a whole six weeks, but she cultured the desire. After filting about for a year, not understanding why I wanted to bellydance I was captured in Amy Sigil's Fairy net, and she's been my Earthly dance godmother ever since!

My belly dancin' mama was a woman named Tahari from Reno, Nevada. It took me about 6 weeks to understand what in the world she was saying (her accent was so thick) but after that I was hooked and took classes from her for 4 years. She was positively wonderful and just sparkled with personality. She originally was a Polynesian dancer who took up belly dancing. While she loved ME dance, her heart belonged to Polynesian Dance. Unfortunately, she collapsed right after a performance in Reno, slipping into a coma and passed away a few days later in May 2003 from a brain aneurysm. Her husband had a website dedicated to her but a few years after her death he remarried and took the site down. *heavy sigh* I miss her.

I've taken lots of classes from so many fabulous teachers over the years but she was the spark that lit the fire.

What a wonderful way to honor her memory is to honor her and what she gave you that you could not have bought at a store. That's all any of us would want, is that we helped brighten up someones life by knowing us. Thanks for sharing Minya!

    Jill Parker.

Interestingly, someone (I think it was Shay Moore) said I was "definitely 'Jill's daughter'" in response to a youtube post of my latest solo. I certainly take that as a compliment!

My mama is actually a Daddy!

John Compton and Habi Ru. We worked the Ren Faire circuit up north at the same time. I literally stalked this man during every performance . . . Technically he was also my first teacher because I started taking notes on the moves and staging of the troupe and musicians.

Politti and the rest of the ladies from Yogini Kundalini. I wanted to be like THAT. Politti was da bomb....still is. I didn't ever actually get to take lessons from Politti...but I did get to dance with her briefly. First real lessons came from Judy who taught me the basics, pushed for me to get out there and dance.

My mama is Layla Haddad.. No.. not the famous one... That was the name of my friends mother who took me into her home and taught me the dance... okay.. her and her mother and her sisters and her in-laws... It was a family affair... with the men completely banished from the room and loads of language barriers.
After that, I have had several mentors and real classes with other teachers.

First Feiruz 30 years ago, for one short year. then I forgot about it and started up with Fahtiem just 2 years ago. I finanlly found my nitch and Tribal mama which is Katarina, She has enlightened me to the idea of tribal. Thank you Katarina. It is funny how we don't know what we are missing till we find it. That was truely a birth for me the tribal style. I love it.

What a great question. It is interesting to see all the familiar names. And know we had the same beginning. What a great sisterhood.

My sister in dance Jeri introduced me to the dance at an SCA event and then the SCA ladies gave me FCBD. The rest is history.
