  • It was astounding! I loved the music. Rachid is a wonderfully inspiring musician who plays from his heart, Suhail is a master of classical doumbec, our own joe is a master of the rik and is asked by every famous Middle Eastern musician to accompany them and the bass drummer whom I do not know held everything together wonderfully. And the dancers.....what wonderful poetry in motion. Lara/Kymana, Carrie Konyha, Amanda Rose and the world renowned Helena Valahos were totally spellbinding. Thank you Elissa!
  • Thank you Thank you Elissa. We loved Souhail, Rachid, the workshops and the show. You did such a great job of putting it all together.. Thank you soooo much. And on top of all of that your drumming was awesome, too.

    • still.........sigh.......mmmmm it was wonderful
      • Awww.....thanks, guys! I took a nice nap after the event and just woke up. Thank you to everyone who continues to support these events despite some unfortunate economic turns of late. I hope everyone can still find ways to support what they value, so it doesn't all disappear. I think when things are toughest, that's when fun community events are the most important. We're all a big family, and we're all in it together. (Enough philosophizing....)

I have to give a few shoutouts to everyone who volunteered their time and made the event possible:

Edric/Dave for his fantastic light show.

Louis Rodriguez of Bartholomew Faire for donating and setting up the sound system.

My friend Linda and her bf James for allowing the use of their beautiful house, and allowing us to move every piece of furniture and letting the vendors take over the interior and the musicians and dancers take over the exterior, and for letting us poke tiki torches in their pristine lawn and put up a tent and throw down a million throw rugs and pillows and tables and candles and light things on fire and make a lot of noise in their back yard and take up every square inch of parking for miles around and for dealing with the cops, and especially for not complaining when we left all that crap over there because we were too tired to clean it up. I promise I'll come get it some day.

My sister Tiffany for arranging the whole thing while I was on the other side of town taking workshops. Yes, she did EVERYTHING at the hafla site. And somehow was still awake and sane at the end of the night.

My brother Aaron and Arik for being gophers and tiki torch lighters.

Helena for her amazing stomach. I will never wash these quarters again.

Big thanks to Souhail, Rachid, Majdi, Joe, Me, Amanda, Carrie, Lara, and Helena for gracing us with their wonderful talent.

Also to Anaya Tribal for their impromptu performance during the drum jam, and thanks to the drum-jammers for drum-jamming. And the vendors for vending.

A huge thanks to YOU - everyone who came, supported, and had a good time!

I'd also like to thank the Academy for having me here tonight, and my mother for giving birth to me, and God for creating Tribe and drums.....and....hey, wait, don't start playing the music yet!....I also want to thank Burt Bacharach for his inspirational crooning and the Bay City Rollers.....and... and....Steven Colbert for exposing bears as godless killing machines and....hey, I'm not done yet!
