Making Changes

I have been making some positive changes lately. For one thing, I joined a fitness club and hired a personal trainer. My company pays for half my fitness dues. One of my main goals is to improve my balance. This is something that has always plagued me as a dancer. My trainer has me doing exercises on a bosu ball as well as doing "one legged marches." Of course, I am also doing leg strengthening exercizes. Then there is the treadmill. Instead of simply walking at a good pace, he has me doing intervals using spead and elevation. I usually end my workouts with 10 minutes or so of yoga.

I inspired Terri, I think. She also joined a fitness club and hired a trainer. In turn, I was inspired to make some changes in my eating habits by the fact that Terri has given up red meat. For the most part, I am now eating very little, if any, meat in the evenings. Instead, I eat lots of veggies and some pasta. I get most of my protein during the day from fish or chicken. I do enjoy a little red meat once in awhile, but not very often. On the other hand, both of our fellas are meat eaters, so we can't ban it from our kitchens.

Maria, you are my inspiration. I can only hope to be like you when I grow up, if I grow up! Seriously, I look at some of my relatives who are somewhere between my age and yours, and they are not half as alive as you.

I think the key to any of these positive changes is to do them because you enjoy them, and enjoy the results. I find that I like how I feel after working out, and that it makes other parts of life easier to enjoy. My cardio and endurance, and my flexibility are improving already!

      Way to go!!!!!

      :):):)

Dave and I have been off red meat for almost 2 years and we feel terrific without it! Of course our eating habits are much simpler too.
We don't really cook big meals anymore which saves Dave alot of time in the kitchen too. :)

Keep up the fabulous work ladies!

Yes, I am trying to get away from the big meals for the most part. I used to feel I had to have a chicken breast or pork chop or something as well as veggies at night. Now I often just eat whole grain pita bread which I have dipped in some hummus. I like to cook up some veggies to add to the little meal. I am even getting Barry used to having meatless meals sometimes.

Oh, and about feeling good after a workout--I feel best if I have time to do my yoga for awhile after the workout. It seems to relax me, and it feels so good to stretch out all those muscles I have worked so hard.

Steph, thanks a lot for the encouragement! My progress is a little slower than Terri's, except I can tell the difference on the treadmill. The first time I tried the high elevation, it was soooo hard. Now I am finding it a lot easier to do the intervals.

2 years! Excellent. It's been almost a year now for Dennis and me. He doesn't mind it a bit - he's been a real sport. But he really doesn't care to be in the kitchen cooking - I guess he prefers my cooking over his!

I can't wait to see you at Northern Lights! We have lots to catch up on. Are we still staying together? I have been trying to make it up to one of your workshops, but it just hasn't worked out :-( The photos of them always look great!

You know, I really don't miss all the food I thought I would. Like hamburgers and stuff like that. Unfortunately, most of the good effects of better eating have been more internal than external. My cholesterol went way down, thank goodness. And since starting my desk job a year ago, working out hasn't been a high priority! Thank goodness Mary got me back into working out. Slow but sure, I'm getting back in shape again!

I think (hope!) we're staying together... I'll have to confirm with Wendy, though. :O) She's in Egypt right now... (I'm SO jealous!)

I can't wait to see you! I hope we are starying together. This is going to be a great workshop.

Oh, and my dietary changes really made a difference to my cholesterol too. We had a wellness program a couple months ago at work where they brought in technicians who did cholesterol and glucose tests, blood pressure, etc., and I brought my test results to my doctor when I went last week. His comments were, "WOW! I wish I had your test results! Whatever you're doing--keep doing it!!"
