Flaming Lips might be the best band alive !!!!!

The Flaming Lips have been round since th early 80's, and what makes them the perfect band like other great bands, they change their sound through time. But they did not change just for the sake of trying something new, they changed in order to make the sound they have already created better and further musically engineered. They started out as a punk/psychedelic band, but now they are still punk/psychedelic/experimental/alternative. And there is much more to it to.... the lyrics are immaculate and timeless. If you want to achieve the ultimate psychedelic experience then you want to throw in some Flaming Lips from "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart" to present. The last album At War with the Mystics (2006) is amazing and has won many awards. But most importantly one must go see them live before you die or before they stop making music, which would be such a tragedy. Everyone should get the Flaming Lips in their life in some form or another.... do you realize?

Best band EVER? That would have to be The Allman Brothers Band

Give a listen to the reissue of "The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East". This band has been amazing since the late sixtys, the late sixtys, that's fourty years. They have been through hardships ,break ups, and reformations. They currently are the best staffed most talented rock band in the world. Warren Haynes and Deric Trucks are two of the most talented rock/blues guitar players around. Either can play rock, blues, slide, traditional bluse, acoustic, or jazz. The sound of the two playing "twin" guitar or the interplay between them as they trade licks or share the lead is wonderful. Warren not only plays for the Allman bros, but also leads Govt. Mule and tours as lead with the remants of the Greatful Dead. Deric Trucks also fronts his own band, The Derick Trucks Band and tours wth his wife Susan Tedeskie. When Eric Clapton was putting together his last tour he wanted a young American guitar player to go with him, he made a phone call to...Derick. This band can rock you too the core with solid rock, traditional bluse, blues rock, jazz and ballads. They can mix several genres in the same song. Seamlessly moving through time changes, key changes, rythym changes. Effortlessly changing from bluse to jazz and back angin. Every concert is 100%, they don't back down or back off. The world lost an amazing talent when Duane Allman died. We owe a heartfelt thanks and gratitude to his brother Greg the true Allman Brother and his band. Jam on!

Calvin Don't Jump

Most things work in mysterious ways, or they could, if we used more imagination.....

http://www.perhapstransparent.com/artists/artist.php3?authorid=19

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/musicreviews/c/calvin_dont_jump.htm

Quite what they put in the water in Athens, GA is a mystery. The psychedelia addled songsmiths that pour from the area is nigh on legendary and it’s hard to imagine the same twisted pop coming from anywhere but the hippy heartlands of the US. However signs of late signal that the party may be over with the Elephant 6 collective wavering and the likes of Beulah threatening to quit. Thankfully, they changed their mind and Kirk J Pleasant, formerly of the weird and wonderful Olivia Tremor Control, is back with his second Calvin Don’t Jump album. Symbolic of the maturing scene in Athens A Way With Birds is slightly edgy and paranoid. The chiming power pop of his previous work is replaced with Latin guitar licks and dark orchestration, adding to a feeling of the sentimental and longing for happier, less complex days. After the beaming innocence of yesteryear the come down was inevitable and this resonates through the melancholy in his vocals and the dark, intermittent dream sequences placed between traditional song and instrumentals. Recorded in the humid swamp lands of the south this is a sometimes oppressive record, darkly mysterious and inspired by the stagnant, stale occupation of growing up. Despite his changing world and anxiety for the unknown Pleasant still manages to sow seeds of hope throughout A Way With Birds. On Infant Creation a young baby giggles over a tenderly strummed acoustic while the lyrics of Wo evoke that happy times will be upon us again (“we’ll all meet together then / some sweet day…”). This is a truly magical record, uncomfortable on occasions, yet inspiring us to move on and continue dreaming.

cd review by d.j. kirkbride
Okay, so you're probably wondering how A Way With Birds, the new album from Calvin, Don't Jump! is, right? Of course you are! You're in the fabled Entertainmental section of the paper, looking at a bunch of words with the promise of this album's review. It's only natural that you'd think you were about to read said review. But, see, the thing is, while I'm sure these people are fairly talented and most likely earnest musicians, I honestly can't remember anything about the album. For true.

I mean, I know I listened to it, but,.. nuthin'. I retained nothing. "Listen to it again, fatso," you say? I'm listening to it again right now, dick!

And that "fatso" comment wasn't called for.

That's right. I'm listening to this album by,.. uh,.. Calvin & Hobbes or whatever at this very moment, and all I hear is my own heavy, strained-from-mass-amounts-of-cheese-and-butter breathing. This album isn't bad to me. It's just, in the end, all too forgettable.

Interested to see what all the lack of fuss is about? I figure there's some info on 'em at their label's website.

love all-ways,

Built to Spill

Some of you may read the subject of this post and say "What a dork, trying to pass off some college indie rock frat boy band as a best band ever! The nerve of some people!" And in reply to this imaginary confrontation of viewpoints I would calmy reply...
Twelve years ago I heard a sound that resonated a spot in me that had not been touched often by outside forces. That sound was created by the Treepeople, who's creative force soon moved on to form Built To Spill The name and the music perfectly express our fragile and sometimes flawed human nature. I have listened again and again over the last ten years to Built to Spill's first album "Ultimate New Wavers"and continue to get a jolt of excitement each listening. Doug Marchst, the singer/songwriter/guitarist/center of the ever evolving group's membership, sings in a slightly whiny, whimsical, and wavery way over the top of endlessly layered guitars and solid drums and bass. His music captures a wistful, sympathetic perspective with its beautifully vague poetic shrugs and powerfull and somewhat childlike guitar hooks.
I am so very happy to be the proud owner of a ticket to the upcoming Built to Spill performance in Missoula on October 14th in Missoula.Hooray!

The Violent Femmes

Way back in my 'old-school' dayz, I head of this rebellious band called The Violent Femmes, but they were guys!? They were funny & had a completely different sound ~ their songs were kinds intelligent, but NOT TOO intelligent ~ I still listen to their "Add It Up" album & smile & dance around ~ only recently did I hear anything about Lilith & not from them.......

Lies:

Well I'm reading this poem
and it's so profound
and I like its rhythm
and I like its sound
it's by a very famous poet
no critic can criticise
and then I pause a moment
and I start to realize
he's tellin'
lies lies lies
on the motel TV.
I dig the evangelist
he'll tell you all about that
and then he tell you all about this
he's preachin' up a storm
by the sea of Galilee
he's mixin' up the truth
with something funny I start to see
he's tellin'
lies lies lies
I never had this problem
with nobody in the government
I guess I always figured
they never mean what they meant
and GOD help us all
not to be so stone surprised
when we wake up in the stars
with the skies in our eyes
if we keep tellin'
lies lies lies

"As Above, So Below" applies to neo-classical speed metal guitar too!

There's a hole in the sky
but don't ask me why
Because I don't know
There is a long way to go
Future will show
Where the road is leading me

I will never die
Cause I will fly
To the other side

I'm trying to fight
For what is right
But evil spirits pass me by
They do what they want
They just don't care
What you feel or what you say

I will never die
Cause I will fly
To the other side

Memories Of East Texas:

Memories of East Texas
And piney green rolling hills
Covered in the springtime
With golden daffodils
Rowing on Sandy Lake come April
Harvesting hay in June
Sitting by the road watching well-fires burn
By an old October moon

I learned to drive on those East Texas red clay backroads
And I mean to tell you my friend
They weren't no easy roads
You had to watch out for all the curves
Down by Kelsey Creek
And detour through the Lindsay's pasture
When the water ran too deep

Memories of East Texas
And Gilmer, county seat of Upshur
Looking back and asking myself
'What the hell'd you let them break your spirit for?'
You know, their lives ran in circles so small
Ah, they thought they'd seen it all
And they could not make a place for a girl who'd seen the ocean

I learned to drive on those East Texas red clay backroads
And I mean to tell you my friend
They weren't no easy roads
You had to watch out for all the curves
Down by Kelsey Creek
And detour through the Lindsay's pasture
When the water ran too deep

Ah, but those memories of East Texas
Those piney green rolling hills
Covered in the springtime
With those wild daffodils
Sitting in those Piney Woods
Playing my guitar
Thinking back on the roads I'd come
Thinking I had not come that far...

I learned to drive on those East Texas red clay backroads
And I mean to tell you my friend
They weren't no easy roads
You had to watch out for all the curves
Down by Kelsey Creek
And detour through the Lindsay's pasture
When the water ran too deep

Artist: Abba
Song: Waterloo

My my, at waterloo napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - finally facing my waterloo

My my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you

And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - finally facing my waterloo

Debbie Harry saved my life numerous times.......

http://www.blondie.net/index.shtml

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blondie_(band)

Toe to toe, dancing very close.
Body breathing almost comatose.
Wall to wall, people hypnotized.
And they're stepping lightly.
Hang each night, in rapture.
In rapture.
Back to back, sacroiliac.
Spineless movement and a wild attack.
Face to face, sightless solitude.
And it's finger popping.
Twenty four hour shopping in rapture.
Fab Five Freddy told me everybody's fly.
D.J. spinning, I said, "My, My."
Flash is fast, flash is cool.
Francois, c'est pas flashe non due.
And you don't stop, sure shot.
Go out to the parking lot.
And you get in your car and drive real far.
And you drive all night and then you see a light.
And it comes right down and it lands on the ground.
And out comes the man from Mars.
And you try to run but he's got a gun.
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head.
And then you're in the man from Mars.
You go out at night eating cars.
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too.
Mercurys and Subaru.
And you don't stop.
You keep on eating cars.
Then when there's no more cars you go out at night
And eat up bars where the people meet.
Face to face.
Dance cheek to cheek.
One to one.
Man to man.
Dance toe to toe.
Don't move too slow 'cause the man from Mars is through with cars.
He's eating bars.
Yeah, wall to wall.
Door to door.
Hall to hall.
He's gonna eat 'em all.
Rapture.
Be pure.
Man to man, body muscular.
Sismic decibel by the jugular.
Wall to wall tea time technology and a digital ladder.
No sign of bad luck in rapture.
In rapture.
In rapture.

Oh Nemesis! how sublime, your rhyme
with parthenogenesis....

Our time has come: Age of the Hammerheads
This is our mission, to be the Daleks of God
Too late for silence, too late for anything
It's all too much for me, its roots go down too deep for me

A punishing fire, an animal frenzy
These hammerhead people know what danger is for
You let them in and now they're everywhere
If it's mineral or vegetable it's back a little up a little

Shout Push Hammerheads, bold and resolute
Marching, balancing, in too far to go back
Yes Yes Hammerheads, swimming, kissing
We are big and clever and we don't know anything

Purification by immersion in our filthy demon seed
We know the only things you like are
Paranoid sex and childish greed
Our own worst enemies they hollow us out of wood
Look at all the grease inside us, gonna get us this time but good
Whether we pull it out or push it in it all ends up the same
You know a hammerhead is a hammerhead by any other name

Shout Push Hammerheads, bold and resolute
Marching, balancing, in too far to go back
Yes Yes Hammerheads, swimming, kissing
We are big and clever and we don't know anything
Onward Hammerheads, bright and dangerous
Jumping, running in the field and factory
God Save Hammerheads, keeping going
We are sleek and special and we're sure of something

Blessed are the ape men, blessed are the shit kickers
Blessed are the jackhammers, blessed is the big damage
Blessed are the faith healers, blessed are the moon walkers
Blessed are the snake people, blessed are the heat seekers

enjoy! (I do)

love all-ways,
mem

Led Zeppelin

I am an old Led Zeppelin fan and I'm sure it dates me. I also love Robert Plant's new album The Mighty Rearranger...
Anyway, it is timeless. When I was teaching a music class at the high school one day a student brought in this CD and said, "Listen to this Mrs. Mallon, I have this great new music"... he put it on and it was vintage Led Zeppelin. He about died when I told him those were the songs from my senior prom. rofl.

does a solo musician count?

If this definition of a band counts, then my favorite musician is Phillip Aaberg. He is a Montana pianist who is well known throughout the universe for his technical skills and passion . His performance contracts specify a particualr model of piano, because the way that he plays can destroy a sub-par instrument. From the most gentle melodic expression of the eastern Montana landscape to pounding boogie woogie renditions of the Nutcracker Suite. Seriously! the last time I saw him play, right before christmas, he played a seven minute version of the whole nutcracker suite, and ripped the shit out of it. I know it sounds ridiculous to use the phrase "ripped the shit out it" when describing a pianist playing the Nutcracker Suite, but that's how much passion this man puts into his music. At that same concert I found myself sobbing with the overwhelming emotional intensity of the first piece of music.

man, what a band! and the musician's their music influenced! maybe the band didn't stack up large in the ultimate scheme of things, but when Lowell George was leading the charge, there was NO music that could rock your socks better. you know you agree. :-)

Consistent, awesome music, defies age and death, born from the blues, original punks, pop with an edge, concept albums that are not cheese, rebound ability, amazing live shows ... still. Many songs put me in the most amazing zones, memory and future. The new album rocks.
