While having a well-rounded background dance is overall helpful, what types of dance do you think help one train better in Bharata Natyam?
I'm wondering this, because I think I'm going to have to switch to Odissi (no teacher in my area.) I'm aware they are very similar, but there are obviously differences. Depending on how much I like Odissi (I've seen it performed, but I'm not sure if it's the style for me), I think I'll switch back to Bharata Natyam once I'm in an area where I can find a teacher. I'm just trying to make the transition between the two dances smooth.

Re: Other dance training
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 7:08 AMAny dance that improves your stamina, coordination and memory will help with your Bharatha Natyam training. And Odissi sure does that and much more !
Of course, since Bharatha Natyam and Odissi share the same origins and are so similar in many aspects it would be very helpful to study Odissi too. Many Bharatha Natyam dancers do.
The most important thing I've found out about indian dance is practice as much as you can. The precision of movements is very important. Even if you are studying Odissi, but find Bharatha Natyam to be YOUR style (as I found out myself) , you should practice whatever you have learnt at home.
Also, there's no harm to know both styles. Indian dance is so wonderful you may want to learn ALL styles !!!
Good luck !
(Sorry for the BAD english LOL) -

Mon, August 15, 2005 - 3:09 PMI feel that ballet helps alot !!!!!!!!!! I,ve felt that it improves your core strength, helps on the hips outer rotation and the " plies" ( half-squat ).,and on the body weight distribution. I`ve read that last centura classical ballet dancer anna pavlova was really interested into bhratanatyam, due to the similarities in the technique. -

Tue, August 16, 2005 - 8:37 AMI am a belly dancer, but I use a lot of indian influenced moves in my dance style... I REALLY want to learn B.N., but I live in Utah and there are NO teachers here! Anywho, I think that any type of disciplined dance helps one prepare for other styles. -

Re: Other dance training
Tue, August 16, 2005 - 11:20 AMI belly dance, too; it's my first dance passion. If you're interested, you should just ask EVERYWHERE. You never know. I hear temples are excellent places to ask around, as well as instructors in relatively close areas. Indian dance lacks a good directory of instructors.

Wed, August 17, 2005 - 7:20 AMhi Kelsey Welcome !
If you want to learn BN in Utah, you can try and check out the Radha Krishna temple over there (www.utahkrishnas.com/main/home.asp). They always have dance shows at the festivals. I believe that the wife of the temple president is also a BN dancer. Also lots of indians visit the temple. Somebody there may help you. Good luck ! -

Re: Other dance training
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 11:28 AMHi Krishna!
Yeah, they sponser lots of dancer to come and perform there, but they don't actually teach BN. The Temple is only 15 miles away from my house, so my belly friends and I go to all their major festivals to see the dancers. Last time we were there, Sharu and his Vi asked us if we were trained in any classical indian dance styles. We told them no, but were bellydancers. Vi told us that if we found lessons or taught ourselves we could perform in their festivals. Needless to say, we have been trying to find lessons! -

Fri, August 19, 2005 - 6:57 AMWow you are so lucky you live near the temple !
I am sorry you are not able to find a teacher around your area. I will keep asking around !
But if you and your group do some indian-inspired bellydance Sharu would be very happy to have you present it in one of the many festivals they have over there ! -

Re: Other dance training
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 5:42 PMHi Kelsey! I too am a belly dancer and include some Banghra in my dancing. Though I haven't done any "real" performing yet, I just love to do it. I am a student at CWU (Bio and Anth majors) and I recently decided to get a dance minor as well. To get that, I'll be taking a full year of modern dance and a full year of ballet. I've already taken the Folk Dance course (very interesting) and am currently enrolled in Ballroom I. I made the decision to minor in dance because I felt that having this sort of experience would benefit my dancing.
I too have been wanting to learn Bharatha Natyam but I don't have that option where I live. In Seattle, there is an Odissi instructor, but it's a difficult drive (over the pass) plus I couldn't really afford anything else after paying for gas. I've been debating getting some DVD's and trying to learn the basics at least. I would love to someday be well trained in BN. Until then, I need to focus on my studies. Maybe I'll try to decide which grad school to attend based upon the availability of a BN instructor! I'm already scoping out the SCA action in the areas that I'm considering...yes...I know it's about the school...not the other stuff. But it doesn't hurt to look!
btw: I think this my first post here. Hi everyone. Hope you're having a good new year so far.

Wed, January 9, 2008 - 3:50 PMI just started as a Dance Major and I'm going to be taking Ballet. So hearing you say this is a good thing because I concluded that Ballet would be great for cross training.
Good to hear!

Re: Other dance training
Wed, May 17, 2006 - 11:45 PMNot dance, but yoga. My BN teacher is also a certified yoga teacher and we always do some yoga exercises before we dance. And although I must admit that I don't like doing yoga too much, it really helps with the understanding of how to use your body efficiently and avoid injury. At the moment I even take an additional yoga class. -

Re: Other dance training
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 3:52 PMThis is also good to hear because I've been wanting to take Yoga as cross training and just a Lifestyle change too. My teacher takes it, so It's good to hear from other dancers that this really is a benefit.
