The Bible in literature

In another tribe where I posted an invite to this one, a conversation ensued about Mark Twain's novel "Huck Finn."
I held that although Twain did not *endorse* the Bible (---his posthoumous "Letters From Earth" make that wickedly plain), he would appreciate a reader who *got* his biblical allusions.
Make of that what you will. For us here, it might be an interesting way to find common ground if we talked about works of literature we love that have biblical themes in them.

For me, the two works that are uppermost in my mind (-because I have read them in the past year, each twice, even) are Melville's "Billy Budd" and Milton's "Paradise Lost."

The latter is incomprehensible without knowledge of the Bible (-and tough sledding in places even for those who know it)---you just can't follow the "argument" at all.

"Billy Budd" doesn't require so much knowledge of Scripture but it is clear that Melville's Billy Budd (-the character) is a Christ-like figure and that Melville is addressing issues of justice and innocence in the novella.

What are your favorite literary works that make reference to the Bible in a significant way?
