Starting a community garden?

topic posted Fri, December 28, 2007 - 8:18 AM by  Maré
There is an abandoned little plot of land on my block in which people have taken to dumping their trash. Every once in a while the sanitation department comes and cleans it out. I would really like to start a little community garden there come warm weather time. Does anyone know anything about how to find out who owns the land? Have any experience with starting a community garden? Suggestions?

Can you access it? If so, just do it. Just start.

I lived on a block that had a tree with dirt around it where everyone would throw trash and dogs would urinate/defecate. I cleaned it up and brought in dirt, put up a fence and planted. It was a struggle to keep it going, clean, etc. But whenever someone would see me working out there and stop to tell me thanks and how beautiful it was, it was all worth it. I moved off the block and visited 2 years later and someone had created something even bigger and better than I had. But it took me to start it.

Here's a link to an org called Green Guerillas: www.greenguerillas.org/ I bet they could give you some great advice too.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will check out the links! I would like to just "start it" but it's a kinda big plot, I will put some thought into how to set aside a little space to protect some flowers. I will probably have to start small until I recruit some helpers. I do think, like you said X!ne, that it makes such a difference to have a small square of beauty. Everyone appreciates it and the beauty can spread and multiply.

What part of town is it in? I was interested in getting involved in a community garden project when things warm up. I was thinking of joining an already established garden, but I like the idea of jumping into a project from the beginning too and contributing to a space that really needs revitalizing. Keep me posted. I'm sure you'll be able to round up a few helpers, if you decide to go forward. In the meantime, here's a few resources that might be able to help out:

      Good luck!

Thanks Carly. I'm on the edge of Williamsburg and Bushwick. I am always up for helpers. I am going to begin looking into all these resources in the cold weather months and dream of spring. Hopefully by the time it starts to warm up, I'll have some sort of plan.
