The January Fan Appreciation edition of the Big Apple Con brought forth the same degree of creativity and excitement that has come to be expected from the Captain Zorikh Costume Contest.
A modest but spirited collection of costumers took the floor in the panel room to impress the audience and earn valuable prizes. The field was smaller than that at the National convention, but all the contestants were dedicated to their characters and the audience was enthusiastic in their reception of them. Among the contestants were a Superman, Catwoman, Evil Ernie, the vampire Mystical Tragedy X, and Jordan, the newest mercenary from the Doom Maidens. Each of the contestants was given the opportunity to come forth and introduce themselves.
The Superman was clad in the classic George Reeves suit, and showed great aplomb and confidence. Evil Ernie (who in the past has been known as the “Grim Reaper” was his savage self, and Jordan engaged yours truly in some hardcore judo moves.
The fans awarded Superman the highest honors, earning him at $20 gift certificate to Midtown Comics (www.midtowncomics.com) (www.myspace.com/sabretoothx. Mystical Tragedy was awarded the two tickets to Father Sebastian’s Anti-Valentines Day Masque Ball. Other contestants received Captain Zorikh CD’s, and a dance-off was held to award a copy of The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary (www.captainzorikh.com/wts/pen...d.html). That was taken by Superman, who had the courage to step into the middle of the floor and jitterbug with Catwoman.
Photos were taken (check them out in the photos section) and fun was had by all! Be sure to come back to the next Big Apple Convention in June for what promises to be an even bigger, more exciting contest with lots of fabulous prizes and competitors!
