i'd like to make a bra for a costume but i dont know what bra would be the best to use. i was reading on some other tribes about using fabric stiffener, would it be best to use that or get a bra with stiff cups already? which ones do you guys use?
i should really go in and get professionally measured -- is there a good store for doing this?

I prefer to buy slightly stiff padded bra and go from there, I hate the rock hard stiff Egyptian ones ouch!!!!
Every time I find a great one they stop making it. And I am a 40DD so I can find them sometimes.

I am currently a huge fan of the le mystere dream tisha bra. Great support, good shaping & an incredible range of sizes. yippee! but their fitting is very different from most bras I've tried, so plan on either finding a local retailer or sending back a million bras until it fits. they are generously sized, I had to order down quite a bit. In most bras I fit about a 34 F-G, which somehow translated to 34 D in the dream tisha. I really don't care as long as it holds every thing together!
best of luck! -

Wow...that's totally the opposite of my fit experience. I normally wear a 32F or FF in Fantasie or Freya, but the 32G is too big in the band/small in the cup in the le mystere dream tisha.

"I normally wear a 32F or FF in Fantasie or Freya, but the 32G is too big in the band/small in the cup in the le mystere dream tisha."
just goes to show, the whole universal sizing theory is a bunch of hogwash, most of the time. I'm going by Bali & Goddess fit to compare the tisha to. I used to mail order them from bare necessity, but we've got an almost local dealer now (only 300 miles away is close in Alaska!) They run $60-$70 usually, but bare necessity had some good deals when seasonal colors were on their way out- so if you don't care what color it starts out at, keep an eye out!

i've heard alot of good about those bras, are they pretty expensive?

www.barenecessities.com/productviews.asp this is their sizing instructions. I have never heard of measuring above your breasts for band size?
www.barenecessities.com/Le-Mys...ze,.htm only $68.00
Looks nice though. -

the measurements are a guideline, but by that standard, I should be a 32F. (31 overbust, 38 full bust) but I wear a dream tisha 34D- kind of like shoes, no manufacturer actually follows the 'standards' exactly- it is a guideline to get you started. And don't get me started on pant sizing- do you wear a current size 8, a 'feel good' size 8, a size 8 as of 1999, a size 8 as of 1980? I held on to a comfy pair of jeans from jr high (yes, I still fit them- just fill 'em out different now!) and what was once a size 8, by today's standard is either a size 6, 4 or 0, depending on where you shop. Ugh.

I agree that the measurements are just a guideline. According to every method of measuring that I've encountered, I should wear a 36D, but I actually wear a 36DD.
And clothing sizes! I wore a size 16 for years. Lost 20 pounds and somehow I still have to buy a size 16, albeit they do fit looser than they used to. But, according to any standards that involve common sense, I should be able to fit a size 14 all the time.

I am actually wearing a Dream Tisha right now (with lace). I like them alot, and am probably going to do my next tribal bra out of one.
My sizing was not that different from what I normally wear, I suppose. I think I measure something like a 44 G or H. Usually I squeeze into 44 DDDs from Lane Bryant. My cabaret-ish bra that I'm working on is made from a 44G Dream Tisha, and the one I have on today is a 44F.
They have a sizing chart on their website www.lemystere.com/care.html. If you can determine a reasonable estimate of your size, you can usually find them ALOT cheaper on eBay. I've bought three there, all of them had tags, and none were over $30. -

Also, for my aforementioned cabaret bra, we completely disassembled them and only used the cups. We built sides and straps from fabric and interfacing and trim, and the cups are made rock hard with Alene's stiffener.
Neither of my tribal bras are like that. Unless you're encrusting the entire thing with coins, I think the Tisha would be firm enough without stiffener. -

yes yes, i want to know tooooo! (and thanks for the link, i can never find the site for these "dream tishas"!)

Here is Aleene's Stiffener:
www.duncancrafts.com/ProductDetails.aspx
Basically what we did was cut the cups out of the bra, and paint them with the stiffener. Let dry, and then repeat. Mine has either two or three coats, and it doesn't budge! After that, we covered the cups with fabric, made sides and a center piece for between the cups of fabric and interfacing, and sewed it all together. All edges were finished with a flanged trim, which is also used to create straps. It's a very cool process.

I prefer a stiff cupped bra.. Not bullet proof but stiff. Before I buy it, I turn it inside out a few times and make sure that it holds its shape.
A lot of it is trial and error, because honestly, the first brand I bought was perfect.. then, when I went to make a second one and found the same brand the padding had changed.
SO... I make sure I have enough time in the store and I touch everything that I think might work.
