Big Brother 7 All Stars: She Throws - He Catches!
Strategy Commentary by Viking Bear
September 8, 2006
Last night on Big Brother 7 All Stars, Mike Boogie from Season Two won the final head of household competition. He evicted Janelle, keeping Erika to face the jury. Next Tuesday we get to see the Jury Grilling, and the final vote.
The question is... did Erika throw the competition?
Have you been reading the Big Sister newsletters? Twenty-nine SECONDS after the show was over, I had email from Big Sis. She asked me, "Did she throw it?" And that, my friends, is the question of the evening!
I don't think anyone will ever know. This is the All Stars. One thing the All Stars can do is throw a competition without a mark ever showing.
Do you see the irony? Erika has beaten Janelle - and possibly Mike Boogie - with Will's strategy. Let me explain.
Will's strategy is to never win a competition. There is always a bigger, more urgent target to evict. Will surely holds the record for the most consecutive Head of Household competitions lost. Every competition this season had at least one person not trying to win. These are the All Stars, and losing the competition can be a strong strategic move.
Mike Boogie tried the Richard Hatch strategy. He was the wrong person to try that, at the wrong time in the wrong place. If Will were still in the house, he would have been the right person to step down from both the first and third phases. Janelle would take him (if Erika's gone, she'd still be under the Chill Town spell), and Boogie would take him. Will loses no votes by stepping down.
Erika promised Janelle to take her to the final two. Erika has no chance of winning the jury vote against Janelle. Neither has Mike Boogie. So what's the answer? Throw the competition to Mike. Let him evict Janelle. I think she has about a 50/50 chance of winning over Mike. So... did Erika throw it? I don't know. But $450,000 says we'll always think she probably did. Way to throw, Erika!
I think we'll most likely see a four-to-three jury vote. It could go either way. We could have Marcellas, Howie, and James throwing their "Janelle" vote against Mike and therefore towards Erika. Will votes for Boogie. George votes for Boogie if Will asks him to. Danielle votes against Erika. That splits the jury three to three with Janelle the deciding vote.
At first I was thinking Howie would probably vote for Boogie because Howie's in love with Will. But Howie is more in love with Jedi Janie. He'd want to know who did this to her. Boogie evicted her, and therefore he'll vote for Erika. I'm not sure it would occur to Howie that Erika maybe threw the competition for that reason.
The Chill Town strategy was far more respected than the floater strategy, which gets Boogie more potential votes. But Erika may get points for busting Will who controlled the game from before day one, and Janelle the unbeatable competitor. I call it a straight-up 50/50 chance, with Mike Boogie having the slight edge. We have Will on the jury still pulling for Mike, and Erika has no real friends on the jury at all.
I'm thinking of comparing Mike Boogie to Cowboy and to Lil of the Outcast Tribe of Survivor. None ever should have won the final competition. But that's not fair to Mike. He won when he needed to win. He is an All Star. Will and Mike proved to be the unshakeable unbeatable pair who controlled the entire game. Chill Town faltered in the end game, but Chill Town absolutely earned the right to be in the end game.
Tonight Erika opened the possibility that she and Mike Boogie might just be the secret Mister and Missus Smith alliance. An absolutely secret alliance overthrows Will and makes it to the final two? How cool is that? We'll never know if Mike and Erika were secretly aligned before they entered the house. We'll never know if Chill Town had population three all along. We'll never know if Mike and Erika conspired to split the winnings. We'll never know if Erika threw the final competition.
n my opinion, all four - Will, Janelle, Erika, and Mike - all played a winning All Star game. Likes, dislikes, and scum bags aside, any of the four earned the win.
Way to throw, Erika!

However, let's take this thought and run with it a bit further.
Of the Final Four, could any of them have beaten Doctor Will? Certainly not! Specifically, with Will and Boogie in the final two, who would win? Will!
Who was Head of Household when Chill Town lost it? Mike Boogie! Therefore, when Chill Town lost it, who remained protected? Mike Boogie. Do you recall Mike saying on camera some weeks ago that the plan might be deeper than anyone suspects? We assumed this was in reference to playing Janelle and Erika. But the way he said it just made you go Hmmm.
We're all blaming Mike Boogie for being a jerk to Erika, and costing Chill Town the game. But look at the result! Mike Boogie can't beat Will, and - horror of horrors - the women evict Will. Nobody can beat Will, and neither Mike nor Erika can beat Janelle. Funny thing, that. Mike and Erika are in the final two. We blame Mike for Will's eviction, and we suspect Erika threw the final competition to Mike. The result is a perfect outcome for Erika and Mike Boogie. What an interesting coincidence!
Did you see Mike describe how he mentally mapped out that laser light challenge? He's extremely intelligent. He's able to map out moves ahead and consider their consequences. Do you remember when Mike won that veto competition where he needed stitches in his foot? That was after the all-night wake up calls. Recognizing words backwards a letter at a time takes high intelligence and concentration.
I've been suggesting for weeks that if Mike Boogie wants to win, somebody needs to eliminate Will. And, funny thing, nobody ever got around to sending Chill Town home. Isn't it an interesting coincidence that Chill Town fell apart while Mike Boogie was the protected Head of Household?
I'm especially surprised at Will's complacency. Season Six knew they needed to put a bodyguard on Janelle to protect her from other people putting ideas in her blonde head. Will's been sleeping in the same bed with her, and he STILL failed to protect her from Erika comparing notes. Was it inevitable? With Will in the picture, I wouldn't call anything inevitable!
To be sure, Mike Boogie's shock seemed sincere. Erika's "check mate!" to Mike seemed real. Were Will and Janelle both totally played? I don't think so. I think it's totally coincidence that the outcome most convenient to Mike Boogie happened while Mike Boogie was the protected Head of Household. Yup. Coincidence. Absolutely.
What a perfect ending to such a great season!
