well, i think i can answer for myself that they are a turn ON almost anytime - except maybe when im not expecting it - but my brain is pretty good at changing subjects so even if it is not "expected", then it can be "enjoyed".

If I met a guy in a bar and after we'd been chatting for a few minutes, he unzipped his pants and pulled out his dick to show me how wonderful it was, I would consider that at best to be rather rude. Same thing when we just met on-line and he sends me an unsolicited dick pic. Is this the best thing about him, that he can't wait to show it to me?

If a guy insists on a dick pic in his profile I encourage him to NOT make it the main photo. If you visit ALT it's all dicks for the most part. I have always ignored anyone that uses his penis as the main photo on personals. I'd much rather see someone doing something they enjoy (with clothes on) to get a feel for their personality. Besides, a LOT of the time the photos are really poor quality.
There truly is a difference for men and women when it comes to visual. There are women that are turned on by what they see but men are FAR more into that. I think that's the same reason that the few times I get to chat the first thing guys ask me is what I look like. I try to point out that we're just chatting--I'm not looking for a boyfriend. They always say "I just need to get a visual."
I think it's kind of funny that for a man--it's all about his penis--his favorite toy. I don't think I'm obsessed with any part of my body. I have nice feet but never send anyone pictures of them. -

On another dating site that I'm on, a lot of women do include pictures of their feet and
I've always been puzzled by whether they thought that was a turn on for men.
Most of the men on that site feature dick pix, however a lot of women have vulva shots,
pictures of them being penetrated or giving head -- sometimes all at the same
time -- or pictures of cum dripping off them. I can accept the idea that if men are
visual, it is to the women's advantage to portray herself that way (good marketing),
but I can't help but think that there is a lot of exhibitionism going on for both genders.
