I has a bucket

Well, two of them actually.

I found these plans over the weekend ( www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/ ) on how to fashion hard-side panniers from 4 gallon square buckets. So I stopped in at the grocery store on my errand run and asked if they had any of them. The bakery gets their frosting in those buckets and they keep them (washed out) for folks like me who ask for them.

Free buckets, and about $10.00 worth of mounting hardware. (4 vinyl coated J-hooks, some bolts/washers/nylock nuts, and a couple of bungee cords)

    not a new idea,but a good one.

www.citybikes.coop/buckets.html citybikes sells them for $25 each...( hey, they got rent and wages to pay..) but you do it yourself and save.

my buddy loves them for when he goes fishing. Keeps his catch fresh while fishing, and then transports them home..

I was really floored when I saw how much Cobbworks charges for their bucket panniers: $80.00!!!

I've been tossing around the idea of a trailer for grocery and errand runs, but maybe that will be my big buy next year (or Santa will be nice to me). I was looking at panniers like the Ortleib waterproof ones, and they're kinda pricey. Sure, the buckets may not have the benefits of compressability when empty, and they'll be total shite for aerodynamics, but on a utilitarian basis they're grand. I can put all my stuff in the bucket, and effectively triple the platform space on the rack with the wide, flat tops of the buckets.
