Are you seeing more cyclists?

The number of cyclists I encounter on my way to/from work has increased considerably, as have the number of my coworkers commuting by bike. Is anyone else seeing this type of increase?

I have definitely seen more cyclists of recent. It probably has to do in part to the great system of bike lanes and wide, well-maintained roads in my area. Though sometimes I go to other towns and see even more cyclists.

I'm wondering if falling gas prices will induce more people to start driving again?

I've been seeing far more cyclists than in years past. I suspect that in these parts falling snow will be an even bigger factor than falling petroleum prices. Others will wimp out after their first bad crash.
Another thing I have noticed is a sudden jump in bike thefts. I get the local paper and always read the weekly police blotter which details such things.

28% more cyclists in Portland during the annual DOT count day. . Also big increases in winter riders and women riders.

    follow the link: bikeportland.org/2008/11/0...e-traffic/

its not that we are so good, but that most places need to organize and demand facilities that encourage cycling and riding. This is the result of a 20 year commitment to decreasing the number of SOVs and increasing human powered and transit use.

I have noticed more cyclists in the past ten years, but I also moved from LA to the SF bay area so its hard to really say but probably yes.

There is definately a bike culture developing and Critical mass, cruiser rides, bike clubs, bike gangs, kid bike re-builds, community bike projects, bike kitchens, bike organizations, mountain bikers, indy bike builders, fixie kids, Lance Armstrong wanna-be's, Chopper riders, Bike Music Festivals, Bike bands, commuters and anyone who just likes to ride are all being a part of it.

      Its just what we do...

Here in the northern suburbs of Miami, I'm seeing way more cyclists on the road, and it is not for recreation. They are clearly cycling to work or toward the bus stop, so they can bike and ride. It's quite encouraging.

I *was* seeing more cyclists, but I was new to urban living, and the weather was nice when I moved here. But now it's wintery, and gas here is 1.59 p/g. There are still a few cyclists (maybe I see 5) out when its below 30, but it's a tough call. We have a couple very active pro-cycling/walking groups in town:
    www.pednet.org
    and
    www.getaboutcolumbia.com

that have been working to make it a lot easier to be a cyclist and/or pedestrian here. I fully expect a lot of people to hop on their bikes in the spring.

Over the summer as the gas prices began to increase dramaticly I did see more riders, but since gas price haves fallen again and its nearing winter, I am not seeing as many. Plus I lived in rural Jefferson County Washington state and the rodes here don't seem to be suitable for bicycles, even though I do it as much as I can. It is still hard for me to ride rather than drive when the rain is gushing and the temps are falling, I seem to always have an excuse. Now Port Townsend which is about 10 miles north of here is much better for bikes. There are trails all over town and The Food Co-op has put in an extra covered bike rack. Please, someone come over here and kick my butt so I will start riding again.

I'm on the other side of the Sound, but I know what you mean. Next week the temps are supposed to be in the low 20s at night and max out in the mid 30s in the day. I'm sure I won't see (m)any other commuters out on the roads next week when the snow hits.

I never much minded bicycling in the snow so long as the traction wasn't too bad. Sometimes it was hard to steer if the snow was deep enough. On the up side, the body warming effects of the exertion pretty much offsets the chilling effect of the wind. Of course I don't bike far in snow. The post office or library, a mile or so, are usually my limit due to the lower speed attained.

What sucks about it here is what happens when it snows:

Seattle has crap-all for snow removal, so it stays on the roadways. We can't use road salt because the run-off would harm the fish, so there's no fighting it before it hits the ground. (There's a new ice-preventer in experimental stages, and it's made from effluent waste from brewing beer. However, it smells like a horrible huge beer fart wherevever they've sprayed the stuff down.)
Anyhow, snow falls, everyone drives on it and gets stuck on the hills because they have no traction in their RWD luxury sedans and lightweight sports cars, so they LITERALLY give up and leave their car in the middle of the icy road. I'm not kidding; people leave their cars in the middle of the friggin' 405 freeway and walk to the nearest hotel. So, the slush now freezes into solid ice overnight and all the cars are stuck there until everybody gets their shit together and (during the day when it's sort of melted) drives home, randomly bouncing off all the other stranded cars.

It's pretty sad, really. What's worse than the sports cars are the SUV pilots who don't understand that 4wd isn't a Cloak of Invincibility +4, so they go hauling ass down the road at 45mph. Then they have to turn. Or stop. Or, at least try to. *ooops*

Riding in the snow up here isn't nearly as difficult as back in the midwest. It's never very deep, and once a car goes over it, there's a solid tire track to ride in. None of that fluffy deep stuff that makes it hard to turn and impossible to see what you're riding over. In 3 years, I've only encountered that once up here.

Yeah. Were you around in the winter of 90-91 when the artic freeze hit. I was living in the Melrose Court Apartments on the corner of Melrose and Olive and man that was a crazy time. We were at the library and it started snowing, so we did what we had to do and then headed home which was not much more then a mile away. By the time we got within two or three blocks away from the apartment, I had to get out and push with the tire spinning and rear end fish tailing. That was fun. !-5 looked like a parking lot and metro transit were on the radio and TV asking were their buses were. I'll tell you what, I have never in me 48 years never seen a winter such as that.

I just moved out here about 3 years ago, so I missed out on that one; but I lived at the Capitola on 14th and Republican for a while, so I know the area you're talking about.
The past 2 years have been pretty harsh for snow over here on the eastside, and what I'm pretty stoked about is that I'm never the ONLY set of bicycle tire tracks on the Sammamish River Trail. There's plenty of other crazies (well, maybe not plenty, but at least 2 or 3) who ride in any weather.

I'd really like to build a dedicated urban bomber bike for weather like what we're expecting. My Cross Check is great when I drop the 35mm studs on it, but the design is a little "tall" for a bike where I might need to foot-down fairly often. I'm looking at building up a Salsa Fargo or a Surly Karate Monkey.

What about training wheels where the wheels have been replaced by small skis? A trike would be ideal on snow.

Would you get enough traction from the rear wheel if the skis offered enough 'float' to be effective?

For really really snowy areas, I think a bike like the Surly Pugsley is a better idea. Those 3.8" Endomorph tires will float over darned near anything.

(That's also a consideration for my buildup, just because you can ride that sucker over ANYTHING!)
