Matching Tunturis?!

The other day, while my Nova was receiving an emergency cassette replacement in Sebastopol, I spotted the matching womens Tunturi to my own! This is the first Tunturi that I've seen that isn't just a crapped out frame...let alone in the exact same configuration mine was when I first got it. I even thought about having the shop contact the owner, just so I could see if the owner was free for dinner so I could discuss acquiring the bike...or single? You vintage bike fans know how it is; the possibilities of sprocket love.

Anyone have a resource for information on older REI bicycles? This bike looks to be around 20+ years old and has aged good components and a really nice frame on it...I'm thinking of fixing it up to be my primary road bike but specs would help (or maybe me getting a caliper might help too).

Suntour Thumb shifters and friction vs index Deore LX vintage

I recently acquired two handlebar sets with original Suntour Thumb shifters on them. They are really cool because you can interchange the two sets simply by removing the finger screw from the top and replacing it on the other handlebars. Pictures when they are available.

I've already had one mechanic down at Waterfront Workshops inquire about them...seems they may be collectible...although, frankly, not as useful as those early 90s Shimano Deore LX shifters--I just discovered that it would cost over $300 to replace those on my 1991 Specialized Rockhopper...and that is for components that don't have an index to friction toggle switch. Man, they don't make them like they used to...now all the shifters are indexed pretty much on mountain bikes and hybrids so the components are not as versatile as they used to be.

Looks like most kids growing up nowadays don't even know much about friction shifters. In any case, since I can put an 8 or 9 cog Freehub on my Rockhopper's Deore LX hub and just switch to friction shifting if my index won't synch...I'm going to keep my old shifters for sure. And if you have older Deore LX component bikes, I advise you not to part with them...I mean, do part them out to your other bikes but don't sell them! This stuff is in demand and there is a reason for it...this stuff works and it works with modern and old equipment. If you buy new equipment, you have to shell out $200+ just for the shifter/brake integrated assembly which isn't as good as this older stuff!

Vintage Bottecchia/ Campagnolo Road Bike - $850
Beautiful Bottecchia Road Bike. I believe 1972. All the components and pedals are vintage original Campagnolo. Paint is a shimmer light blueish grey. 52 Frame, Steel Columbus tubing, with down tube shifters. Cinelli bars. This is definitely a collector’s bike. Should not be used as parts. Let me know if you have any questions.

...went on craisglist and started picking up old bikes for free on the free section there.

So far I've got a women's 27" Schwinn with Shimano FF rear cogs with an SIS derailler and Positronic shifters...now all I have to do is figure out how it works--anyone have experience with one of these bikes? I'm going to search for the what the serial number on the front means later. I'm repacking the rear bearings and have located, by happenstance, another Schwinn rear wheel that is from the same era but is not the rare FF cog set. I'll need this to cannibalize spokes...possibly transfer the whole FF cogset depending on which wheel is truer. The front derailler is a "Falcon"...whatever that is. This bike saw little use because some [your favorite word for 'numbskull' here] clamped down the lower end of the shifter cable so that it couldn't move in the cable tube near the front derailler--loosened it up and 'voila!' front shifter works like a charm! (Uh...after adding some superlubricant to the cable housing, of course.) The shifters are on the stem. This was a probably high-mid range model and stlll have the original seat in fine condition. The brakes also work fine and look to be originals too. The only two downsides to this bike are the rear derailler cable is not a stock part and has been modified to work on the front shifter so that it doesn't have a full range of motion and there is a bit of rust in non-obvious spots. I'm actually really pleased with this bike--it's comfortable and works good. Even the peddles are in free motion and no sticking. I read somewhere that this bike was designed (the ones with the FF cogsets) to last more than twenty years. The bearings seem to have no wear so these are superior bearings...although the cups are messed up a bit...since I have two rear sets I'm going to combine the best cups into one hub system and get the most out of this bike. Investment so far? $3.88 for one new tube.

Also, someone flaked on picking up an old Tunturi (model unknown--haven't located serial numbers yet) that is a Shimano GT200 derailler set so, after ten days, this guy got back to me and asked if I wanted it! Yay! This thing has a Sachs front shifter and a weird indexed 6 shifter ("Posidex Joytec x6s") for the SIS 7 derailer on the back. Since I'd also picked up some Mavic 238 front and rear Parallax STX wheels with a rear 8 cog set (for free too!) and Salsa quick releases, I decided to use those instead of the original 1.75" steel rims (very heavy) that were rusted out. Sweet! Now all I need to do is get a good set of pedals; one is shattered and rebuilding didn't help. Investment so far? $12.50 for bearings and a rear tire (I got a Velociraptor 2" rear for $12 at Velosport in Berkeley--ask them about their 'green tag' tires next time you drop in!) Even the tubes were good on this bike...the tires were just out of air!

Also picked up a tricycle for my niece while I was at it. Adjusted the handlebars and seat but this is not a vintage tricycle...it's only five years old...but it is a retro design that looks like it's from the the 1950s, all metal, red and white with a humongous bell on it.

I'll post pics when I get some more time...

Hooray! Hooray for craigslist!

Budget bike parts at department stores

Okay, so, in the past few months I've noticed that both OSH and Target carry basic bike parts like cables and racks and gloves n stuff. What other brand stores carry bike parts? The two I mentioned had good prices on select items--in fact, I was shocked at how cheap basic cables were at OSH (2.79 including the housing!). At Target, you can get a cheap kickstand for $5, and Schwinn padded gloves in an assortment of colors for $13...and not of a bad quality either...just in time for winter, yay! So, where do you go for your cheap bike parts/accessories when you need something basic?

Some places now on my list to check out are: Sears, the Great Satan that is Walmart, Longs, Walgreens, Ace

Of course, these places are for just basic stuff. Since Target sells bikes they naturally had a better selection than OSH. Anyone have any surprises out there on some place totally unexpectedly having good deals or amazing selection on bike accessories?

I've gotten the bug now.

Am working on restoring an old Raleigh 10-speed, and a small Fuji VALite 414 "Sagre" I just picked up today. The VALite is in good shape (thanks craigslist!) The Raleigh is coming along now that I've taken some brass brushes to it and replaced the rear break cable. The Raleigh is definitely a labor of lube...but I'm half way through the recondition and the shifters are working pretty good. I even fixed the chain link that had some internal rust problems (I do have more spare time on my hands than I really should).

Along with these I also picked up a Free Spirit 12 speed that is probably destined to be a fixie Burning Man bike for someone as yet who has not stepped forward.

I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Apparently, the surplus was sought out by the masses to the point where they were produced in huge numbers (and are still in production today). has anyone seen one of these here in North America?

I've been sourcing cool retro bikes for a project at the architecture firm I'm working at (how cool, huh? perfect person to do it!) and came across this company! These bikes are so dope! http://www.feltbicycles.com/felt2006/07CRUISER/hb.php

There are actually a lot of cool modern retro bikes out there. I'll keep my schwinn, but this one is cool too!

I'm looking to replace the basket (it's missing) and would like to find resources for doing that. Also a headlight add on would be nice.

I found this bike in the trash so it was FREE. So far I've put less than $50 to make it rideable, but eventually I would really like to restore it fully.

I love this bike because it reminds me of the bike that the mean old lady in the Wizard of Oz rode. I use it for my "Studio Bike" when I work on big lots.

At the end of the 19th century, the bicycle became a popular form of exercise and transport. Acrobatic music hall performers began to experiment with what new things could be achieved on this new contraption ? although how and why someone discovered they could put out candles with bicycle wheels is a mystery.

As far as women were concerned, the bicycle was a controversial invention. For one thing, they had to mount the contraption which gave comedians ample scope for innuendo. Doctors warned of damage to women's sexual organs, not to mention their fragile nerves. In reality it meant that women now had an independent means of travel. It was also a chance to exercise in public although this was also disapproved of in some quarters.

Shifter reconditioning questions

Anyone know if a 7 gear rear indexed shifter, Shimano ST-CT15 is worth trying to recondition? Is it possible, given that there are likely warn plastic parts inside? Is there a compatible shifter I could replace this with that will work well with the Altus A20 rear derailler? The bike is not worth anything but the thumb shifter has gone loose and I'd hate to have to replace the whole assembly, possibly junking the bike in favor of a new one if I can't figure out a budget way to fix this.

Also, if anyone know, can I safely take the rear shifter assembly apart by releasing the top and bottom screw on the housing to inspect inside? The thing sort of still works but it keeps failing to down-shift regularly. The problem is not on the derailler as far as I can determine as I've adjusted the cable (and tested the cable tensioning somewhat) and when the shifter does work, the derailler appears to work pretty well...it appears to me to definitely be something wrong with the index assembly somewhere. (I had a similar problem with the front gearing where the 3 gear shifter wore out and I replaced it...uh, is there a more modern shifter I could adapt the A20 rear derailler with?)

I've kept this bike limping along for years--it was left by a bicycle thief 8 years ago in place of a much better bike that was stolen from a friend of mine, has been to Burning Man three times, etc-- and even managed to pick up a free compatible, much less heavily used, brake assembly last year from the REI bike shop guys.

What I liked at first about this bike was that no one would want to steal it, right? Plus, now that I know the bike pretty much inside and out (I've repeaked the bearings, etc), I don't want to give it up without a fight...just want to know what I'm facing with the worn out shifter.

...at the top of the Oakland Museum, the very tippy top, there is a sculpture that has a whole bunch of old bike parts wielded together...and, if you look closely, one might note that many of the hub and bearing assemblies, etc, might be...vintage...

So, my parents just got me a rather lovely coffeetable-type book of vintage cycling and history...

Bicycle: Boneshakers, Highwheelers and Other Celebrated Cycles

By Gilbert King - 128 pages - hard cover. This photographic survey is richly illustrated with images of one of the world's largest private collections of bicycles from the 1850s to the 1950s, and includes some never-before-published photographs. From antique high wheelers and "boneshakers" to tandems, tricycles, and circus clown bikes, it provides a fascinating historical retrospective of the bicycle's development and evolution. Courage Books 2002 ISBN # 0-76-241262-3

Pretty cheap on Amazon:

I've been meaning to take a couple of photos of my bike and put them here for weeks, and finally I have.

Here the whole bike:
http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/1cd/360/1cd360ea-e7f1-417c-a960-7173c608088a

And here's a detail of the chain ring:
http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/8bb/f40/8bbf4048-1c4b-47c6-97b2-84b068c5f3b3

A couple of years ago I made an arrangement with a friend who used to build bikes at Bruce Gordon Cycles in Petaluma. They needed a website designed and I needed a bike, so we did a trade.

The frame was found in somebody's side yard, all rusty; they gave it to us for free. I think it's a mid-1950s Schwinn. The other parts were things my friend had been collecting in the back room of the bike shop over the years: the chain ring, the handlebars, the new-old-stock leather seat, the rubber grips, etc.

Other parts were new: the headlight, the tires, the bell, and the Shimano internal gears (it's a 7-speed).

The damn thing is so heavy it nearly gives me a hernia every time I take it down the front steps to go for a ride, but I love it.

Hi everyone...

This weekend I bought a Raleigh Lady Tourist. I first saw it months ago on Craigslist, and the owner was having second thoughts about lettting her go. When he finally changed his mind, I was there.
The Lady is a dream cycle...28 inch wheels and smooth pedaling. The bike path seems like a magical adventure now, and the Brooks saddle is comfy and bouncy. She has rod brakes, which are a trip.
I love this bike and had to tell the world.
see pic album for photo of the Lovely Lady

Fat Bottomed Girls Lyrics
Artist(Band):Queen

Are you gonna take me home tonight
Are down beside that red firelight
Are you gonna let it all hang out
Fat bottomed girls
You make the rockin' world go round

Hey I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad
But I knew life before I left my nursery
Left alone with big fat Fanny
She was such a naughty nanny
Heap big woman you made a fat boy out of me
Hey hey!

I've been singing with my band
Across the wire across the land
I seen ev'ry blue eyed floozy on the way, hey
But their beauty and their style
Went kind of smooth after a while
Take me to them dirty ladies every time

Oh won't you take me home tonight?
Oh down beside your red firelight
Oh and you give it all you got
Fat bottomed girls you make the rockin' world go round
Fat bottomed girls you make the rockin' world go round

Hey listen here
Now I got mortgages and homes
I got stiffness in the bones
Ain't no beauty queens in this locality (I tell ya)
Oh but I still get my pleasure
Still got my greatest treasure
Heap big woman you gone and made a big man out of me
Now get this

Are you gonna take me home tonight (please)
Oh down beside that red firelight
Are you gonna let it all hang out
Fat bottomed girls you make the rockin' world go round
Fat bottomed girls you make the rockin' world go round
GET ON YOUR BIKES AND RIDE!

Oooh yeah oh yeah them fat bottomed girls
Fat bottomed girls
Yeah yeah yeah
all right
ride 'em cowboys
PAUL REUBENS • Actor / Comedian

Name at birth: Paul Reubenfeld

http://www.who2.com/paulreubens.html

Reubens played Pee Wee Herman, the sweetly juvenile prankster in a red bow tie, in the Saturday-morning children's program Pee-wee's Playhouse. Reubens was a member of the improvisational comedy group The Groundlings (along with Phil Hartman) in the 1970s, where he developed the Pee-wee character. Pee-wee was an asexual man-boy who combined kitsch with off-beat humor, and by 1985 the character was so popular that Reubens got his chance for a feature film. He hired newcomer Tim Burton to direct, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was a surprise box office hit. CBS ended up giving him a shot at a children's show on Saturday mornings, Pee-wee's Playhouse. The show was popular with viewers and critics, but was cancelled in 1991 after Reubens was arrested in Florida and charged with indecent exposure. Reubens stopped performing as Pee-wee and has since appeared in movies such as Matilda (1996), Mystery Men (1999, with Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo) and Blow (2001, co-starring with Johnny Depp and Penelopé Cruz).
Reubens joins Catherine Deneuve and Brad Pitt in our loop They Played Vampires.

If any of you want to be inspired and made to salivate, do a search for "Dutch bikes" on your favorite search engine. Dutch riders expect their bikes to be their main vehicle, and the way the bikes are made, and the AWESOME style will make you smile.

Especially gazelle bikes. beautiful.

Schwinn BiKes...KiCK aSs!!

That was what I had...

when I was a kid.

It was a

GREEN
STING
RAY!

The Amazing Banana Seat
allowed me to carry a passender
*easily*
on the back.

This bike could (and often did)
carry 3 passengers (tho not too well)
The rider, one passenger on the handle bars,
and one riding backwards on the seat.

KILLER.

It was especially fun to ride on the back
sitting BACKWARDS -

letting someone else peddle.

There was a very boSs metal loop/ring/handle
that came up from the back of the seat -
which served many functions...

1. A place to hold on to when riding backwards.
2. A place to tie long ribbons or a kite.
3. A handle to pull a skateboarder.
4. A place to tie bags that holds all your cool stuff...jacks, cards, candy etc.
5. A Handle for pulling your bike out of a ditch.

I probably used the Loop for # 5 the most.

I was a "Tom-Boy" and this bike was the SHIT.

I AM NOT KIDDING.

She rode LOW to the ground
so you could SLIDE her down
easily enough...

She also was suprisingly sleek and airy -
the best bike on the block to jump ramps.
We would set up the Evil Keneival (sp?) ramps
and do things only stunt men would dare to do.

KicK aSs!

I could ride her through the dirt
and mud and just hose her down
and she would become
sparkly new again.

The bike was handed down to me by
one of my older sisters....

But it had always
FELT like MINE ; )

When she gave it to me.
The banana seat (green sparkly vinyl)
was splitting open and a dirty yellowish
foam rubber was trying to escape.

My mum took me to a bike store
and let me pick out a
brand new seat!

So
COOL.

I chose a white one that had those
early 70's big mod flowers all over it.

GeeZ!

Thanks for starting this tribe Paula!

I had kinda forgotten how much
that old bike meant to me.

I learned how to ride a two-wheeler
on THAT BIKE!

I wish I had a picture : (

She was a
BEAUTE!
She even
had streamers
on the handles!

Oh yeah...
AND I could
peddle REALLY FAST
and then GLIDE
standing up on
the seat!

She was also an awesome
POP-a-WheeLie bike ; )

Never DID like 10 speeds.

Did anyone ELSE have a STING RAY?

Does anyone STILL RIDE a STING RAY??

if so..

PLEASE tell us ALL ABOUT IT!

The drawing of the Sting Ray as the current main pic
is FAB! Really captures the feel of my old bike!

aa

Schwinns in the Family

So, I found out why the family has always had Schwinn Bikes - my dad worked for several years at a Schwinn Bike Shop, when he was in high school, repairing bikes!!

And, in possibly awesome news:

I thought my parents got rid of both the old green 70s Schwinn bikes (they had a matching set) - but my dad seems to think they still have my mom's bike!!!!!!!! awesome!! I've been bewailing the loss of those bikes... more when I see it for myself...

But wait, there's more!

Meet us a little earlier at Speedway Meadow for a rolling bike parade through the park, sponsored by the Bay Guardian and the SFBC.

We will start Contest & Ride Sign-in @ 10:30am for 11am departure. It's free to ride, but we are asking for a $5 dollar donation to the SFBC’s efforts to build the Bike Network.

While at the park, look for opportunities to wrench on your bike, get your face painted, eat some good food, have a beer and join our cycling circus of sensory splendor. OH YEAH, and we will be giving away a Fat Tire Cruiser Bike at the end of the day! Don't miss out.

All proceeds from beer sales (4 bucks for a sixteen ouncer) will benefit the San Francisco Bike Coalition, and The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. We'll bring the beer and you just bring your bike!

Paula?

What have you DONE to me??

Bicycle: The History (Hardcover)
by David V. Herlihy

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/product-description/0300104189/ref=dp_proddesc_0/104-9826176-1826340?%5Fencoding=UTF8&n=283155

Review
"Bicycle is the preeminent research document concerning the invention and early development of the bicycle, but most interesting is its analysis of the bicycle's role within societal development."-Velo News

Book Description
In the twenty-first century we have all experienced new technologies that promise to change our lives. During the nineteenth century, the bicycle evoked an exciting new world in which even a poor person could travel afar and at will. But was the “mechanical horse” truly destined to usher in a new era of road travel or would it remain merely a plaything for dandies and schoolboys?

In this, the definitive history of the bicycle, David Herlihy recounts the saga of this far-reaching invention and the passions it aroused. The pioneer racer James Moore insisted the bicycle would become “as common as umbrellas.” Mark Twain was more skeptical, enjoining his readers to “get a bicycle. You will not regret it—if you live.”

Because we live in an age of cross-country bicycle racing and high-tech mountain bikes, we may overlook the decades of development and ingenuity that transformed the basic concept of human-powered transportation into a marvel of engineering. This lively and engrossing history retraces the extraordinary story of the bicycle—a history of disputed patents, brilliant inventions, and missed opportunities. Herlihy shows us why the bicycle captured the public’s imagination and the myriad ways in which it reshaped our world.

From the Inside Flap
"David Herlihy is a widely recognized expert on the history of the bicycle, and this book offers the most comprehensive account to date of the bicycle and its development from a novelty for the elite to transportation for the masses. Frequently wry and always intelligent, Herlihy takes us on a marvelous tour of the bicycle’s fascinating history."— Peter Joffre Nye, U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame and co-author of The Lance Armstrong Performance Program

"Bicycle is a fascinating book. David Herlihy is a true historian, and he has uncovered a stunning amount of new material about the history of the bicycle--at times it reads like a detective story."— David Gordon Wilson, professor, MIT and co-author, Bicycling Science, and Human-Powered Vehicles

About the Author
David V. Herlihy is a historian and freelance writer. He has been interested in bicycle technology since his days as a member of the Harvard Cycling Club, and for the past decade he has researched extensively the invention and early development of the bicycle. His work has been featured on National Public Radio and Voice of America and in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, and Historic Preservation. In 1999 Herlihy received the McNair History Award from the Wheelmen, the preeminent American association of antique bicycle collectors. He lives in Hull, Massachusetts.

For starters:

Paula:
1970s Black Schwinn Breeze (woman's bike) with Tassels... gotta have tassels... I'm currently looking for an original black and white Schwinn seat...

I grew up riding Schwinns, had three before this... very sad my parents got rid of their matching 1970 Schwinn boy and girl set...

I also have an early 90s Trek mountain bike, with silly bell and horn...
