An Adult Helmet Law in Austin? Speak your mind Aug 14 and 24

There is a proposed helmet law that all in the Austin bike community should be aware of. It would require that Bikers of ALL Ages would be required to wear a helmet by law. Regardless of how you feel about the law, I would encourage everybody to take advantage of the public hearings to voice your opinion. Oppurtunity #1 is today Aug 14 and the other is Thurs, Aug 24. Both are at City Hall.

(excerpted from the http://www.bicycleaustin.info email list)

"Monday, August 14, 6pm
Urban Transporatation Commission Meeting
Austin City Hall
301 W. 2nd Street
Boards and Commission Room, #1101

On the Agenda:
D. Riverside Project Bike Path Update
E. Status of Bike Plan I and II
F. Austin Roadway Repairs
G. Proposed Mandatory Helmet Law
I. Striping Sharrows on Santa Cruz Drive

Pro or con, this is your opportunity to speak up about the proposed helmet law in an atmosphere that's a little more relaxed than a city council meeting. I encourage everyone to show up and speak your mind wherever you stand on this issue.

... or find out just how bad the streets really are and what kind of Nirvana was promised 10 years ago in the COA Bike Plans I and II (and what still needs to be done to reach this state of bicycling bliss)."

(excerpted from the yellow bike project newsletter - http//:www.austinyellowbike.org)

"Thursday August 24th, 6pm
Austin City Council Meeting
Austin City Hall
301 W. 2nd Street

There is a proposed helmet law that all in the Austin bike community should be aware of. It would require that Bikers of ALL Ages would be
required to wear a helmet by law. There are groups in Austin working on both sides of this issue. We encourage you to read the proposed law and voice your opinion to the city council. For the Law: view former mayor Bruce Todd's full press release (also see - http://www.bikesafeaustin.org). Against the Law: League of Bicycling Voters (you can contact City Council or sign an online petition through
this site), Bicycleaustin.info, Community Wiki on the Proposed Law. There will be a City Council meeting on Thursday August 24th at 10AM.
All are encouraged to attend to voice their own personal opinions."

And, if you don't have an opinion yet, I would encourage you to oppse the law for the following reasons from http://bicycleaustin.info/

"Austin is considering bringing back the helmet law for adults, as reported in this Statesman article. We oppose this law because:

* If "saving lives" is the justification, then motorists should wear helmets too. More motorists die from head injuries than do cyclists.
* Other methods save more lives. For example, restricting teenage driving.
* Personal safety should be a personal choice. If this is not true, then we should be lobbying for motorists to wear helmets, too. As for taxpayers picking up the tab when cyclists get injured, taxpayers already do this to a much larger degree for unhelmeted motorists.
* Lets at-fault motorists off the hook when they kill cyclists. At-fault motorists already often receive no penalties for injuring or killing cyclists. That will only get worse with a helmet law, in which an unhelmeted cyclist will always presumed to be responsible even when the motorist was at fault.
* Civil rights suffer. A helmet law gives police another reason to harass cyclists. The last time we had a helmet law countless cyclists went to jail (not just ticketed, but arrested and jailed) for failing to wear a helmet. By contrast, motorists generally don't get arrested for failing to wear a seatbelt. Also, the last time anyone checked, over 90% of the no-helmet tickets given to kids went to black and Hispanic kids.
* Distracts from real bike safety. Real bike safety involves training in safe riding skills and making the roadways themselves safer (such as, for example, banning cars from bike lanes -- something the City refuses to do). Making cyclists wear helmets will do nothing to prevent them from getting hit by cars -- unlike other measures we could take right now.
* Helmets are overrated. When helmet use skyrocketed in the 90's, head injuries among cyclists went up, not down. (New York Times) Countries with the most bike helmet use also have the highest rate of fatalities among cyclists, while countries with the least helmet use have the lowest rate of fatalaties.
* There is no crisis. About there cyclists die on Austin roadways every year. And many of them were wearing helmets anyway.

And the most important reason:

* Helmets discourage cycling. Every community that has passed a helmet law has seen the number of cyclists dwindle. In a time of pollution, congestion, and wars for oil, the city should be doing everything it can to get people on to bicycles rather than off of them.

Of course, in a city where the elected leaders think it's okay for cars to park in bike lanes, the push for a helmet law is not surprising."

britain embraces bicycles

Revolution! Britain embraces the bicycle
By Cahal Milmo
Published: 07 June 2006

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/transport/article656400.ece

Britain is in the grip of a cycling revolution as clogged roads, concern at global warming caused by air pollution and the quest for
improved fitness persuade millions to opt for pedal power.
After a decade of stagnation in the number of bicycle journeys, new figures show there has been a dramatic leap in commuters and
leisure cyclists focused on Britain's cities and the burgeoning network of cycle routes. In London, trips by bike have increased by 50
per cent in five years to 450,000 per day while figures obtained by The Independent show use of the National Cycle Network,
covering 10,000 miles of urban and rural pathways, rose last year by 15 per cent to 232 million journeys.
The explosion in bike use, which campaign groups said was happening despite "woeful" under-investment by the Government, is
generating increased friction between cyclists and motorists in cities. Last year, there were 328 cyclists killed or seriously injured on
the capital's roads and more than 20,000 cyclists are injured every year in accidents across the country.
Transport for London (TfL), which is overseeing the most rapid increase in bicycle use in Europe, confirmed yesterday that it was
planning a publicity campaign to encourage greater respect between drivers and cycling commuters as they battle for road space.
Despite the phenomenal growth, Britain remains near the bottom of the European league of cycle use with just 2 per cent of all
journeys made by bike - beating only Spain, Greece and Portugal. The Netherlands tops the league with 27 per cent.
But Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity in charge of the National Cycle Network, said that after many years of steady but
unremarkable growth in Britain, cycling had suddenly taken off. The proportion of commuters using the cycle network has doubled in
recent years, to 28 per cent, according to previously unpublished figures.
Andrew Cope, director of research and monitoring, said: "This is an exciting time for cycling and its development in Britain. On
traffic-free routes, particularly in urban areas, we are seeing a very significant uptake in use.
"Established routes that have been available for a long time where we expected figures to plateau are just seeing more and more
use and new areas, such as Stoke, are blossoming. Where the facilities are provided, people tend to follow."
Cycle use now accounts for 28 per cent of all journeys in Cambridge, 19 per cent in York, 15 per cent in Gosport and 12 per cent in
Crewe.
Experts said the boom was being driven by a mixture of factors, ranging from the "feel-good" influence of getting fit and reducing the
impact on the environment to the practical reality that cycling is often a quicker, cheaper and more pleasant way to get around
compared to private vehicles on jammed roads and overcrowded buses and trains. Traffic in London now travels at 10mph on
average - 2mph slower than it did in 1906 - while satisfaction levels with public transport stand at 44 per cent for the Tube, 37 per
cent for buses and 28 per cent for trains.
The growth has been led by London, where the July 7 bomb attacks generated a 20 per cent increase in cycling as commuters
abandoned the Tube.
That "spike" has turned out to be a temporary blip, with most returning to public transport. But it has been replaced by a steady
growth after investment in cycling increased from £5.5m in 2000 to £24m in 2006-07. The projected budget for 2009-2010 is £30m,
by which time there will be 560 miles of dedicated cycle paths across the capital, compared to 310 miles currently.
A TfL spokesman said: "Cycling is a quick, healthy and convenient way of getting around London. But it is also the case that the
Tube network is reaching capacity and we can only put so many buses on roads that are already extremely busy so the future lies in
cycling."
In so doing, transport bosses are increasingly aware of the delicate balance of power on urban roads between drivers angry at
cavalier bikers going through red lights and emission-free cyclists who live in fear of road-hog motorists. A TfL source said: "We
recognise there is tension out there. We are developing a campaign which will encourage cyclists to respect the rules of the road and
motorists to recognise the right of cyclists to use the road as much as they do."
But amid burgeoning sales of bicycles and accessories (put at £500m per annum), campaigners insisted that the cycling revolution is
far from comprehensive and is being starved of Government funding. Despite a pledge (quietly dropped in 2002) from Labour to
quadruple the number of cyclists between 1996 and 2012, Britain spends just £1 per capita each year on cycling infrastructure and
training. The European average is £5.
The London Mayor Ken Livingstone has set a target of doubling the number of cyclists in the capital by 2020. But even if this target is
met, the proportion of bike journeys will have reached just 4 per cent of all journeys, compared to the Danish capital, Copenhagen,
where the proportion is 30 per cent. When Cycling England, the government body in charge of implementing the National Cycling
Strategy, was set up last year, it was given an annual budget of £5m, compared to the £70m that had been requested.
Adam Coffman, senior transport campaigner for CTC, the national cyclists' advocacy group, said: "Central government cannot take
much credit for the growth in cycling because the money has not been put in. This has been a movement from the bottom up led
from places like London. The growth is very encouraging but we still lack a cycling culture in Britain. There is a tendency to think you
need to don special clothes and buy an expensive bike whereas cycling needs to be seen as part of normal activity - what you do to
go to the shops, school or work."
Ed Lehmann, 58: 'You're safer than in a car'
"I usually try to cycle the 13 miles to work each day from where I live in Oxfordshire," says Ed Lehmann, a chemical engineer from
Stanford-in-the-Vale, who has cycled for 44 years.
"I love it because it gives me the vigour of someone 10 years younger, and according to one study I read about, it should give me an
active life expectancy 15 years longer than someone who doesn't cycle regularly. We're a slightly anarchic lot, us cyclists, and love
the freedom granted by a bike in that you don't have to worry about congestion or bus times or your impact on climate change.
I'm not too concerned about dangers because although it may be hard to believe, you're safer on a bike than you are in a car."
Alex Crawford, 25: 'Freedom is big appeal'
Alex Crawford, a radio journalist from Camberwell, south London, is a novice cyclist. "I cycled as a child but then gave up when I
went to university because I was in Durham, so it was hilly and it was just easier to walk. I'd been meaning to get back into it and the
frustration of not being able to rely on decent public transport, and the expense of the bus and Tube, was the trigger that made me
do it.
After the London bombings, there seemed to be a big growth in the number of cyclists until it reached a kind of critical mass. That
had the effect of encouraging more people to get on their bikes, because you feel safer when there's more of you. The freedom you
get from cycling is the biggest appeal, but also it keeps me fit and healthy and it's good fun, especially the banter with the odd
white-van man at the traffic lights."
Pauline Powlesland: 'I can get to the shops in minutes'
Pauline Powlesland, a psychotherapist from Godalming, Surrey, has been cycling for nine months. "I began cycling again because I
wanted to get fit but jogging bores me and I don't like the gym, whereas I always loved the fresh air and freedom you get from the
bike. When I was a young person I used to cycle everywhere.
"I'm really glad I took up cycling again because it's really convenient. Whereas it would take me 20 minutes to walk to the shops from
where I live, and while it would be expensive to hop on the bus, instead I can cycle there in just a few minutes.
"I'm wary of the major roads, just from a lack of experience, but I think that will pass. I've never had an accident, but to begin with I
got a cycling instructor."

Critical Mass Takes Over Austin

It can take over Austin if all of you show up with all of your cyciling friends. We meet on the last Friday of every month (holiday or not, rain or shine) at 5:00pm on the UT West Mall where it meets Guadalupe between 22nd & 23rd Streets.

this is pretty cool too:
http://criticalmass.tribe.net/thread/55d5b528-7fc7-4136-aa68-7c6cfe813a63

"Critical Mass Do's and Don't's

DO

• talk to strangers, bystanders, bus riders, motorists

• welcome people to join us next time

• help cars stuck in mass to exit to the right

• stop regularly if you’re in front (no matter how slowly you think you’re going, gaps are opening up behind you)

• stop at red lights when in front to allow the rest of the ride to “mass up” behind.

• keep going in dense packs through red lights to stick together and keep it safe for everyone.

• fill gaps; Critical Mass depends on bicycle density to displace cars.

• remember that pleasure and friendliness are more subversive than anger and blaming.

DON'T

• race ahead to block cross traffic before the Mass has arrived

• ride into oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road

• pick fights with motorists, even (especially) if they’re itching for one

• fail to turn and twist through the city to make the ride more interesting

• forget to smile and wave and talk to strangers!

• imagine that you are morally superior just cuz you’re on a bicycle (you’ll be in a car again soon enough)

• hesitate to tell other Massers what you think of their behavior, whether good or bad. Talk to each other!

• forget—we are all responsible to make Critical Mass what we want it to be. "

"Why We Ride

This is the 162nd consecutive month that San Francisco bicyclists have gathered to ride in Critical Mass. The world has certainly changed in thirteen and a half years, but the compelling reasons that draw us together every month are still very similar. In the earliest days of Critical Mass, riding together provided a euphoric alternative to the isolated danger most daily bicyclists face. These days San Francisco bicyclists are seldom alone on the road in the large north-eastern part of the city, from Bernal Heights and Twin Peaks to the bayshore. But we still live in an atomizing culture that seeks to reduce life to a series of cash transactions. Critical Mass exemplifies a rare and exuberant repudiation of that pecuniary logic, as it re-creates every month an authentic, open-ended, passionate, temporary community.

Community—a much abused word and concept—continues to animate and attract us. In our hyper-individuated lives, where we try to choose the terms of our existence, to wrest meaning from a banal world of shopping choices, pointless jobs and vacuous cultural commodities, coming together in Critical Mass continues to defy the prevailing limits of post-modern capitalism.

With news of rapidly melting ice sheets, widespread deforestation and crashing biodiversity, and other climate catastrophes, premonitions of tsunamis, earthquakes and floods overwhelm our individual coping abilities. Alone we cannot face disasters, and it doesn’t matter if they are “natural” or “unnatural.” Pandemic disease, rapid erosion of arable lands, overstretched water supplies and droughts; the sky really IS falling! Riding bicycles is not just a quiet statement against oil wars, it’s a practical demonstration of one component of a new way to live. Together in community, bicycling is one way we are beginning to re-engineer the nuts and bolts of our lives.

The human connections made during the hundreds of Critical Mass rides are both serendipitous and essential. Perhaps more important still is the practical experience gained of a mobile, self-managed, fluid and democratic social event. Our imaginations are permanently altered by riding in Critical Mass—not just ours but also the people who witness it. And we will need all our connections and imagination to make the necessary adjustments in urban living as the perfect storms of political and ecological breakdown beset us in the years to come.

A 1996 Critical Mass cyclist characterized that time as the “golden era” of bicycling. A decade later our bucolic rides remain a euphoric antidote to the steady diet of bad news, venal and corrupt business and government, and worsening ecological catastrophes. It’s important that we recognize the deeper implications of this euphoria too—we are learning while experimenting; we are inventing new ways to coexist; we are managing complex realities from below; we are reliably re-producing webs of human pleasure and conviviality. Ultimately Critical Mass is so much more than just a monthly bike ride.

Thanks for coming—talk to strangers!

I almost forgot about this one.

Date: Wednesday, May 17th, 2006
Location: Pfluger Bridge over Town Lake
Time: Dedication at 6:45 pm; wheels roll at 7:00 pm

On the evening of Wednesday, May 17th, 2006, bicycle riders all over the world will ride in honor of fellow cyclists that have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. In Austin we will start an eight-mile ride originating and ending on the Pfluger Bridge (over Town Lake at South Lamar Blvd). The ride will last about one hour. (Information about rides in other cities is at www.rideofsilence.org

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is being held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The Austin Ride of Silence will start and end at the Pfluger Bridge (Lamar Pedestrian Bridge).

Proposition 1: Open Government & Bicycles

this is from michael bluejays website http://bicycleaustin.info
the specific page is http://bicycleaustin.info/council/2006-05-endorsements.html

Proposition 1: Open Government

Transportation expert Roger Baker relates that when he recently called to check on whether Austin was funding the bike and ped projects promised by the $150 million bond election in 2000, the city told him he would have to file a formal open records request to get that information! When he finally got the info, he found that the money that voters approved in 2000 for bike projects was actually spent on highways!

Enough is enough, let's have open government already. The doom & gloom warnings from those opposed to this measure are unconvincing. Sure, the amendment isn't perfect. But the current system IS? Hardly. Earth to pundits: It's the current system that's broken. The amendment might not be perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than what we've got now. And if the amendment passes and causes problems, then the City will have a big incentive to come up with a better plan to pitch to the voters to replace this one. Whereas if we don't pass this one now, we get nothing.

Here is the bike-in movie schedule this week from nomadic cinema. as usual, all events are free and open to all.

Sunday 5.14 - 8pm
Nomadic Cinema presents: Bike-In Movie #17
Snake Eyes Vinyl, 1211 E 7th St, 220-7019

8pm - Short films / open screen
9pm - MC5: A True Testimonial (2004, 119min, Dir: David C. Thomas)

One of the most electrifying acts to ever storm a Rock'n'Roll stage, the MC5's Detroit performances in the late 60s are legend. Their debut album, Kick Out the Jams, set a high-energy sonic standard rarely matched in the thirty years since its release. The MC5's uncompromising stance and radical affiliations placed them, briefly, at the musical forefront of a generation bent on political and cultural change. In the midst of the most turbulent years in our nation's history, the MC5 embraced the promise and embodied the possibilities of a real American Revolution.

Through rare film and television footage, still photographs and interviews, the whole story of the MC5 will come to life again. This is a story of stars and bars and dragstrips and riots; Panthers and pot-busts; Art and Revolution and the FBI; this is the real story of five genuine American heroes. This is the story of a revolution fueled by twin guitars and decked out in sequined suits; this is a story of the fire and of the smoke behind the American Dream.

with live music from locals, Human Being Lawnmower

Still We Ride (2004, 30 min, Dir: Andrew Lynn & Elizabeth Press)

On Friday August 27, 2004 just days before the start of the Republican National Convention, a massive police operation was underway. By the end of the night 264 people were arrested. It marked one of the largest mass arrests in New York City's history - and the arrested had done nothing illegal.

For many New Yorkers, August was the first time they heard of what has become a monthly ritual for New York City's bike community; a free-forming ride called Critical Mass.

http://www.stillweridethemovie.com/

Bicycle Thief (1948, 90mins, Dir: Vittorio de Sica)

After nearly two years of unemployment, Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally finds work posting bills. But he needs a bicycle to do the job. Unfortunately, he was forced to pawn his own bicycle long ago. In a humbling, tragic scene, Antonio exchanges his family's linen for his bicycle. But when the bike is stolen on his first day of work, he must comb the streets of Rome in search of the bike: his family's only means to survival.

"Deceptively simple and yet profoundly moving, The Bicycle Thief has the kind of power that one rarely finds in movies these days."

Triplets of Bellville (2003, 81mins, Dir: Sylvain Chomet)

In this animated French film, a boy named Champion trains relentlessly for the Tour de France, with the help of his loyal grandmother and overweight dog, Bruno (who loves to bark at passing trains). When the big race comes, Champion and a few of his fellow racers are kidnapped by some box-shouldered thugs who spirit them off to Belleville (a surreal impression of 1930s-1950s Manhattan) where they are forced to pedal as part of a clandestine gambling operation.

"A sophisticated, wholly original brand of animated storytelling that manages to be at once deliriously eccentric and deliciously sinister."

BYO: food, drink, bikes, short films, something to sit on and good conversation

The attached flyer should give you inspiration and information to come next Wed. (the 10th) at 8:30 pm in the back of 911 W. 21st. The spring has turned the backyard into a jungle (quite fitting) so bring a chair, a blanket, or a couch. Come watch the distillation of 36 days, 1500 or so pictures, and 6 different cyclists traipsing through Central America as part of a lengthier Alaska to Argentina ride. The slideshow will be combined with a Costa Rican meal and some cheap American beer. Probably going to be a little screening of a Sigur Ros video before hand and maybe some other treats. Pass this on to all and we'll see you there.

ride to Houston

I've been mulling over this for a while, but really would like to get it off the ground. Info on the route is below. It's going to take three smooth days of riding to complete. There are a few short stretches of gravel so some fairly durable tires would be required. I'm trying to coordinate times and would like to shoot for something relatively soon - before all the school kids leave and before it gets too hot. My plan is to bike this self-supported over 3 days with a solid group of about 4-5 cyclists (although I'm not opposed to other numbers). Mark (who I biked with in the fall - he does The Texas Heritage Cycling Experience) will let me borrow his trailer and hopefully we can find another one here or there. Mark has some contacts along they way in terms of places to stay and people to talk to. To be honest, it's certainly not the most amazing route in the world, but there are some nice small towns along the way.
The beauty is that being on Old Texas 20 you're not competing with too much traffic. I'd like to take pictures of the ride and dig in a little to some of the towns along the way. I think the route offers a good authentic experience and that's what we should go for. Some local eateries, bed & breakfast places (they may offer either a hook-up through Mark or a place to camp on their grounds). Besides picking a date, one other logistical hurdle is to arrange transportation back from Houston. We could always arrange transportation there and ride back home though. Before it seemed like a pretty good undertaking, but after cycling through Central America this will be a nice leisurely ride. Anyone interested in riding?
-Blake

OLD TEXAS 20 BACKGROUND
The remarkably intact Old Texas Highway 20 corridor runs for about 180 miles between Houston and Austin. The towns/communities on the corridor are Hockley, Waller, Hempstead, Chappell Hill, Brenham, Burton, Carmine, Ledbetter, Giddings, Paige, McDade, Elgin and Manor. This was one of the first highways built in the 1920's by the newly formed Highway Commission basically following/hugging the railroad right of way. (Not to be confused with present-day FM-20 between Bastrop and Lockhart.) Much of this corridor follows the ridgeline that forms the divide for the Brazos and Colorado River Basins - a path of little resistance and no significant bridge crossings - great in dry weather before bridges. It was probably a foot and horse trail long ago but in the 1860's-early 1870's the Houston and Texas Central Railroad became one of the first railroads into interior Texas by building from Houston to Austin along this route.
When US 290 was built in the 1950's, Texas 20 was decommissioned. Since US 290 was built on a much straighter alignment than the meandering railroad and old highway, much of the Old Texas 20 Highway still survives today as a series of scenic (often bucolic) county roads. The names of these roads still reflect the history of the old intercity highway: Hempstead Highway, Washington Road, Old Houston Highway, Austin Branch Road, Old Highway 20, Old State Road 20, McDade Road, Littig Road and Manor Road.

CYCLING OLD TEXAS 20
In spite of a few difficult spots, the entire route is currently traversable by experienced cyclists. My wife and I have bicycled the entire route on three-day trips twice now, with no motor vehicle support and carrying our clothes in panniers. We have taken many friends out on segments for day and overnight rides, including an overnight at Chris Jarvis' B&B in Ledbetter, where the heated indoor pool was a big hit after a full day of riding. With signage and some improvements, this route could entice both experienced and novice cyclists to take to the road, build their confidence in their own achivements and, certainly not least, spread a few tourism dollars around the towns in-between. Many of these towns have some great bed and breakfast inns as well as very nice inexpensive 1950's style motels. In the course of our bicycle travels, we have discovered some great restaurants along the way, City Cafe in Elgin, Monzi's in Giddings, Brazos Belle in Burton (run by a French chef,) Ant Street Inn in Brenham and many others.

EFFORTS TO CREATE A BIKEWAY
The Texas Heritage Cycling Experience, which is aligned with Texas Bicycle Coalition, seeks to turn this unpolished jewel into a major intercity bicycle tourism route between Houston and Austin. It is known as Old Texas Highway 20, but is also being promoted by Texas Bicycle Coalition as the Lance Armstrong Intercity Bikeway. We have met with the TxDOT folks from the central office as well as the Houston and Austin district offices and they find the idea very interesting. I am currently talking to a couple communities about applying for Tranportation Enhancement grants through TxDOT to improve parts of the road.

this thurs april 27th - Sustainable Living Movie Night #2 @ Monkeywrench Books BACKYARD, 110 North loop. Movies start at 8pm. Come earlier and check out the book store.

RETURN OF THE SCORCHER (1992, 28 mins)

In the 1890's, before automobiles ruled the roads, bicyclists were referred to as "Scorchers" because of their blazing speed. A century later, in a world filled with car-related environmental and social problems, Return of the Scorcher discovers an inspired and evolving bicycling renaissance.

This documentary touches on a surprising variety of subjects including romance, rebellion, early feminism, and spirituality - all viewed within the context of bicycling.

Return of the Scorcher questions our obsession with "progress" and status and presents a diverse cross-section of cycling visionaries who see the bicycle as a life-affirming vehicle for change.

Break - - - - -

THE END OF SUBURBIA (2004, 78 min)

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?
followed by a discussion of the movies

BYO: snacks, drinks / come early, come late, but do come:

RIDE OF SILENCE

FOR GAY SIMMONS POSEY, KRISHNA WALTERS AND ALL THE OTHER FALLEN. BUT NOT FORGOTEN

On May 17 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is being held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This ride is to honor fellow riders who have lost their lives sharing the road. If you have riders you would like to honor, please submit their names to be read prior to the ride. Starting point will be at Lou Neff Road in Zilker Park. Brief dedication at 6:45, ride begins at 7:00pm.

Free Bike-In movies for you - this thurs and next

come early, come late, but do come:

thurs april 20th (a.k.a. this week, third thursday) @ Waterloo Cycles parking lot (fruth st. and guadalupe over by spiderhouse)

8pm - short films and stuff
9pm - Slam

A raw poem of a movie - a barrage of emotions, that seeks to move you, rather than worry about being slick. Slam tells the story of Ray Joshua (poet and musician, Saul Williams), an original, gifted young rapper trapped in a war zone housing project known as Dodge City. Unable to find a job, Ray copes with the despair and poverty of his neighborhood by using his wits, verbal talent and dealing drugs, until the law catches up with him. In jail, Ray becomes trapped between two gangs, but finds possible salvation through words and writing teacher, Lauren Bell (Sonja Sohn),

Imagine wordslingers and verbal assault squads at work and you get a flavor of the heat that the
language in Slam contains. Both Saul William and Sonja Sohn are poets. All of the poems you hear are the writings of the poets themselves. Indeed, every word in the movie was completely improvised, so that each time a scene was reshot, it became a new scene. Slam does not move seamlessly like Hollywood movies -- it lingers, lurches and leaps breathlessly -- more like poetry than film.

BYO - drinks, food, conversation, short films, the usual

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

thurs april 27th - Sustainable Living Movie Night #2 @ Monkeywrench Books backyard, 110 North loop 8pm (apologies to KC for the clash with her b'day bbq)

Return of the Scorcher (1992, 28 mins)

In the 1890's, before automobiles ruled the roads, bicyclists were referred to as "Scorchers" because of their blazing speed. A century later, in a world filled with car-related environmental and social problems,
Return of the Scorcher discovers an inspired and evolving bicycling renaissance.

BYO: snacks, drinks / come early and check out the book store

-------------_- - - - - - - - - - ----------

the nomadic cinema bike-in movie and social club:

liberating film from the theater, removing you from your car, fueling discussion, inspiring action. always free, reclaiming empty spaces - backyards, alleys, parking lots, blank walls, fields, parks, gardens, bridges

see you on the streets

Parking Lot Politics

i always take the parking lot behind --------, to get to and from my daughter's school using the pedicab for the little one and the older one on her bike

its a great shortcut, plus i dont have to deal with the danger of early morning /late afternoon traffic from I35 or -------

if the security guard from ---- sees us, he'll bitch but i just say "OKOK" and keep on

so today my older daughter happened to take a header in the parking lot on the way home

the security guard pounced and started lecturing me about how it was a private parking lot and the management didnt want me biking through there anymore and i should just take the sidewalk

and i said " you mean the side walk which runs down I35 against traffic? i just go through here because its safer" and then he said i should take ----- and i said theres still a butt load of traffic!and HE said maybe i shouldnt be biking then! and should just WALK!" and looked at me and then my daughters scraped up knee all judgemental and shit!

i mean whats the worst he could do? call the cops on me ? would they fine me?

There is no goal I aim to reach,

grant peterson on bike fit

grant peterson, formerly of bridgestone and founder of rivendell bicycle works, described by many in the macho weight and techno-obsessed bike industry as a "retro-grouch", writes a bit on bike fit well worth reading...

this can be found on http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/html/rr_comfposition.html

A Comfortable and Efficient Position:
One Way to Get It

You should sit well behind the cranks on a comfortable saddle that doesn't numb the plumbing or crush the folds. How far back you sit is up to you (as is everything else), but you should be back far enough so that your weight is being supported by your butt, not your hands.

You should be able to ride the brake hoods with a good, noticeable bend in your elbow, so your forearm is more horizontal than your upper arm. You should be able to remove your hands from the hoods, stick them behind your back, and hold your upper body position without a strain. You should be able to grab the tops (the straight section of bar next to the stem) gently, like a piano player, and without "falling into" them. You should be able to reach the drops with little if any change in upper body position, and ride the drops comfortably on a flat road for a couple miles at a stretch without feeling as though you're doing time. Compared to the position most riders have, this one has the seat a little farther back and the bars much higher, and it works well for most people.
Finding a position like this isn't impossible, just improbable, because people sell and buy bikes too small. Most bike sizers talk about smaller frames being "lighter, stiffer, stronger, more responsive," but in the big picture those things matter as much as ant molecules: Lighter? A few ounces of weight isn't enough to matter. Stiffer? Once a frame is reasonably resistant to bending, there are no important gains to be made by making it any stiffer; and almost all experienced riders like the feeling of flex. Stronger? Frame failures are caused by accidents and bad engineering, not "buying toobigga frame." More responsive? A common description that caves in under any analysis at all. Does it mean "goes faster for any given load applied to the pedals"? Prove it. Does it mean "reacts more quickly to steering input?" Then it will it also react more dramatically to a pothole or a rock in the road.

Most experienced bike riders are scared of getting a frame too big, because they associate it with looking like a newcomer. Lots of adults who buy their first "serious" bike graduate from a slightly too big old cheapo to a way too small expensive one, then find that the old bike, for all its weight and rust and squeaks, provides a better perch. They may not be able to straddle it with their feet on the ground (not how you ride a bike anyway), but the riding position itself is more comfortable. On the other hand, getting a bike too small has no stigma to it at all--if anything, you get macho points along with the sore hands, back, etc.

The first step in determining your proper frame size is settling on a saddle height--the distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle.) That height depends a little on the seat tube angle, because the farther behind the pedals you sit, the farther away you are for any given saddle height; but for any given bike, you'll have a saddle height that feels best to you and gives you the proper leg extension, and that's all we're after.

Once your saddle height and fore-and-aftness is set properly (there should be a slight bend in your knee at the bottom of the stroke; and see Keith B.'s enlightening comments in this issue about the unimportance of fore-and-aftness), the single thing you can do to get more comfortable on the bike is raise the bars to within a quarter inch of the top of the saddle (to an inch and a half of the saddle height--less on smaller frames, more on big ones). Most riders have the tops of the bars where the drops are supposed to be, and the drops are down there so far they never get to them.

They can't raise the bars enough because:
1. The stem quill is too short.
2. The stem angle is too low.
3. The frame is too small.
4. A combination of those

On a bike you already have, the most common way to raise the stem is with a either a long-quill "periscope" style such as a Nitto Technomic or an upjutter like those found on the some mountain bikes, and most cheap hybrids.

If you're starting over with a new bike, just keep the standover clearance to a minimum in order to maximize the height of the head tube and stem exit point (the point at which the stem quill exits the headset locknut). In other words, buy the biggest bike you can straddle with an inch of clearance between the top tube and pubic bone.

Don't worry about the top tube on the bigger bike being a centimeter or so longer than what you're used to and like, since the higher bars this frame allows will make up for that (see the TT/HH Factor, RR6).

Handlebars can be too high. If you climb a lot of hills off the saddle and holding the brake hoods, you need to be able to completely relax and nearly straighten out your arms as the bike rocks side to side. When you rock the bike to the left, it allows your left arm to extend and relax; same thing on the right. But if the bars are too high your arms won't extend and relax, and your biceps will get tired from being flexed all the time.

On the other hand, if you don't climb hills off the saddle, you won't mind the bars way up there. Usually people raise the bars as a last resort to fix an aching back, but I think 95 percent of all riders can benefit from higher bars, and that includes fast people. If you're time trialing with your back nearly horizontal, hands on the drops, look at your lower arm. If it's still pretty vertical, it's just catching more wind, slowing you down. In that case, higher bars won't change your upper body position, but they will change that arm angle, and if the theory holds true, you'll go faster. (Keeping your same back position but riding on the hoods will do the same thing, but far be it from the Rivendell Reader to start giving Go Fast advice.)

The whole idea of raising the handlebars isn't revolutionary; it's the way everyone used to ride until things got crazy, and it still makes sense.

Hey all, I am wanting to get a gathering of bike minded folks together to come up with new ideas for bicycle promotion. I was thinking of getting a meeting time at Monkey Wrench books or some place like that. I bet amongst us we could come up with a bunch of cool shit as this tribe site has already proven. My ideas are for propoganda, bike art, organizing, and classes to get more people confidently riding. I already get paid to teach people to fix bikes (even though I do it for free) and would like to see even more people doing it. If y'all are interested please post times available and I will try and find a space. Thanks.

YELLA BIKES @ SXSW

some friends met me after work last weds night and we saw this truck come and drop off all these yella bikes on the corner of 6th and Co!

i was so HYPED! even though i had the serendipity bike, none of my friends did

was it selfish of me to lock up the serendipity and take one of the yella road bikes instead?! im not used to road bikes and wanted to try one out for the night.....

my friends think im a silly bike freak but i wont give up on them! this was the perfect opp to show them all how great it is to cycle around DT spec during the madness of SX

anyway it was a great night, we saw the flaming lips at fox and hound....or listened i might say, from the top deck, 1.50 tecate!

HOWEVER one friend did get hit by a bus...the roads were slick from drizzle and he's not used to cycling..less than optimal conditions....he's very sharp however and managed to jump off as the bike went under...

just shook him up a bit

another friend didnt understand the CONCEPT of yella bike....simple as it may be

he wanted to toss it in the back of his truck so he could use it the next morning for work...i appreciated his enthusiasm but chastised him greatly.....

the night was so great in fact that i suddenly was hit with the idea for a tatt after all these years.....i didnt have any because i could never think of just the right thing...

i carpe diem'd myself over to the first tattoo shop i found and 45 mins later came out with a small bicycle road sign on my left wrist
.... its not quite complete as i was low on doe........

come eat with me
friday march 17th, 7:30 pm
mekong river
(cheap all you can eat chinese buffet with vegan options galore)
on anderson across from alamo drafthouse village

For a relatively safe bike route, take old guadalupe north as far as you can go (to morrow). turn left on morrow. cross the fu$%ed up intersection with lamar on the crosswalk, then continue on morrow, which veers left over some tracks to become st joseph, which you'll take, crossing burnet, to become northcross. take northcross around the mall and it will hit anderson at just about the right place.

see ya,
patrick
