well. yesterday was on the phone w/ a potential donor for a grant. been tryin' for some time to generate a write of passage program on the rez. have been hittin my head against the wall w/ policies, beaurocracies and snaggles. am talking on the phone and the donor (who is in iowa but also has a place in sfe) asks, 'well let's see if we can revision or something. what's up out where you are? what's relevant? what are youth up to?'
i say, i hear there's a lot of violence. and anger. and restlessness. and addictions. drug usage. frustration.
we start talking about violence and what kind of art might be of interest and
bang! bang! bang!
i look out my window and three kids are shooting a gun at my house.
i say, 'um i think someone's shooting at my house, hold on.'
a bb goes through the kitchen window.
'yup, they're shootin at my house those fuckers!'
one looks like he's 10, the other 14 and a young looking driver.
what's this to do w/ spider woman?
it really woke me up. what am i doing here? what are we doing here? what do we do w/ this violence? how do i interact w/ kids here?
so i'm getting ready to put together a multi-media performance piece on the myth of spider woman. and the emergence into the different worlds. hoping to work w/ youth in a way that makes sense. give them cameras. supplies. make puppets. film. weave it into a shadow puppetry ritual performance piece or something.
i didn't think earlier that the 'desert spider' handle actually meant i wd explore the spider woman mythology or the emergence cycles more closely. have had spiders falling all over my house for the last 2 years. duh! i'd love any and all information pointing me to these stories in closer detail.

Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:26 AMNo kidding Des, I can see you all cool "uuuuh, hang on, they're shooting at my house"! LOL! That's intense sister. I don't have a lot to add to the spider woman stories, but I think you're walking a good walk and think it's great that you're working for positive change around you.
Only Spider-Woman story I know is the ancient greek one of Arachne:
www.goddessgift.com/goddess-...achne.htm
just one link I found to it, but I'm sure there's others. Nice line at the bottom though:
"We are reminded to speak the truth, not out of pride or in an effort to "get ahead", but in the spirit of concern and love."

Re: spider woman. changing woman. white shell woman. teotihuacan spider woman
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:07 AMWow~ Sounds like you did a great job, des! Good timing too, as far as the donor goes...sometimes they don't have a grasp in the reality of what it's really like. I found that when we recently had our Federal Audit. Bean counters are more in touch with the $$$ than the reality of the people they fund.
I think you are onto a good thing with providing an outlet for these kids. It's one of the things I have found in working with the homeless street kids...if you make an opening they will respond. Our program has continued to grow by leaps and bounds this winter because we have provided resources and outlets. The ease at which that happened astounded me and it was all due to just making things available and being consistent positive presence in the community. We have more kids coming for meals, more coming in for emergency overnight housing, and we went to some more sustainable activities at the drop in, which we didn't think would take off...but it did. Some of my staff were doubtful that street kids would want to come for Movie night, or board games night...but they are~
Keep working that Spider woman magic ... it will come~ -

Re: spider woman. changing woman. white shell woman. teotihuacan spider woman
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:36 PMdreamed last night that i gave birth to a girl.
her name was 'nuna'.
i was an elephant and someone was tatooing my feet with the words 'rebirth' and 'world soul'.
i did research on this word 'nuna' and found it is a native american girl's name: guess what it means?
land.
thinking on the feet
and a spider dangling from a web.
it's time to land.
nice to have the support of elephant to ground it.
kind of neat because the woman at the rez called me today, as did polly, a journalist. she wants to do a story and the rez will let me do my thang. 'writes of passage'.
so it is happenin'. at least, despite the current snow, the seeds are patiently waiting. kind of neat. the way things are so invisibly connected. love it. -

Re: spider woman. changing woman. white shell woman. teotihuacan spider woman
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:56 AMi met spider once... she was huge and composed of rainbows shimmering and terrifyingly beautiful....
her presence was wise and loving but fierce and reminding of respect. i realized right there that one had to respect beauty very deeply to live a good life. i saw how people could turn from respect and just fear as well... sad...
i used to have a song that i would play on my didje that would bring her out as well... people in ceremony would feel their faces covered in cob webs and spiders would start coming out of the wood work every where...
always had alot of respect for her...
i see alot of contrary spider in women around me, which saddens me... -

Re: spider woman. changing woman. white shell woman. teotihuacan spider woman
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 9:04 AMReminds me of when I was in the service. There was a broken cinder block by the door. There was a hairy spider that would greet me as I left every morning. My partner was floored when I told it good morning and it moved its leg as if it was waving. All the way to work, he couldn't stop talking about it. We were there for a temporary duty at Duke Field and every day for a week that spider would be out in the morning and we would do the same ritual.

Re: spider woman. changing woman. white shell woman. teotihuacan spider woman
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 4:51 AM....So how did you, "interact with the kids there". Did you go ask them why they were shooting at your house..shooting at you ?
Sometimes we shoot at the things we love, --because we just don't know what else to do. Sometimes we shoot at what we hate or despise.
At times, we just don't have a clue on Earth, and we shoot because we can't imagine the consequences.
But did you ask those kids, at that time ? Did you go to them and say , "Stop That ! You can ruin lives. You can ruin your life !"
Did you take the gun away from children who clearly didn't know what they were doing ? Or did you ask if they had a reason to be shooting at you ?
........Sometimes violence is stopped by adults disciplining children and teaching them how to behave, by teaching them to have respect for themselves and others. Sometimes we need to reach them thru stern words and actions. Then when we have caught their attention, then can come the poetry.
