I may be a bit behind the times on this one, but I don't usually watch kid movies. Visiting family I found myself watching 'The Ant Bully' with my nephew. What a great piece of animist propaganda . . ur um education . . . um point of view.

I recommend it if you haven't already seen it . . .

  • Several good movies mentioned here. Thank you. Trying to figure out what to get my grand daughter (11) is always challenging. I got Princess Mononoke yesterday, and think I will send that to her. She has gone from being fightened of bugs to catching them, and now lizards too in Arizona where she lives. She loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian.
    • cicadas taste awful, but they would make excellent medicine for her. :)
      • "cicadas taste awful"

LOL, there's a lot of folks in Western Maryland who would disagree with you. 17 year cycle comes around and they chomp 'em down good! Heehee...uuuuh, not me though.

I just rewatched Spirited Away again by Miyazaki the other day. Man, his movies just get better every time I watch them.....Plenty of Animism in that one....Radish Spirit indeed!

        :)
      • Ooooohh - that you actually know this.................I'll bet they are very crunchy! They have a front-end on them like the grill on an Edsel.

The Bedouin in the desert were always living on the verge of starvation, so when they were attacked by a swarm of locusts they turned the tables and caught as many as possible to roast and eat. I think that vendors sell roasted locusts over there still. I remember a show several years back where a truck driver got a bag full of them to eat on the road like popcorn, or perhaps more like parched corn, but locusts are more commonly accepted as food than cicadas as far as I know. Neither one appeals to me - too many prickly legs, among other things!
    • For the younger set, Do try "My Neighbor Totoro" also by Studio Ghibli. Disney dubbed it a few years ago.
"Ponyo" also by Ghibli, just came out in theaters in the US and is very good, i can assure you. for the 5+ crowd.

Miyazaki is retiring, or so i've heard. Ponyo is entirely hand animated. there was no computer animation used.
