tree ceremony

every year for six years I went to a san-pedro long dance ceremony held by a bolivian ceremonialist, who i had studied with during that time. the ceremony was a eclectic combination of many traditions that the man had studied and combined rather beautifully. He could integrate nearly anything into a meaningful ceremony. over the years I had become a "dog soldier" in these ceremonies one who helped and protected and lent support to others. it was a big part of my life and every summer summer solstice i prepared and participated in these dances.

there are MANY reasons why i do not participate in these ceremonies any more and many of the reasons why are what has helped to form bioregional animism today, as well as many of the things i learned from these dances, as well as from this bolivian man.

the last ceremony i attended I attended with a very good brother who had never been to one before but had been with me through many of our own ceremonies and healing/growth over the years. this friend was and still is like a little brother to me and i was very grateful for him to be able to participate in something that had been one the one hand a great source of inspiration as well as on the other hand a great source of inner conflict.
during this ceremony, i had a very difficult time taking things seriously, from the get go my contrary medicine and that of my friends relaly stood out strongly to every one else there, we where dancing in an other bioregion as well, it had allways been in washington and now this was in oregon... with people of that place. It was not that it was different it was that it no longer held the same importance to me, it was not my way any more...
some men had created an alter at an old growth fir tree, it was a father alter and it was way off in the bushes out side of the ceremonial space, which had an alter to the earth mother at the entrance to the dance arbor. For years i had hoped to be gifted with a ceremony of my own for the people of my bioregion, or to be given the role of dance chief from this man and lead my own integrated bioregional long dances for my community, not asking for payment just bringing people together to make it happen. but i was not introduced as dance chief that year as i had been told i would, and instead of spending the night dancing my friend and i spent the majority of the night at the father alter, at the tree.
As i have mentioned before there is an old growth tree with an eagles nest on top of it that we allways go to that we have called the killing tree. it had not occurred to me at first that that was our way, our ceremony, our tradition... we stayed at that tree and we prayed, we gave offerings, we communed with the tree, with spirit with the land and sky, we prayed for our fathers and for all fathers, and we talked from the heart with each other between moments.
this praying at the tree had become our way and we had not even realized it. it had been something we had felt moved to do for a very long time so it had become something we all just did. and here we found our selves doing just that while others sought out a way taught by another, coming from other traditions from around the world... we had just felt moved... and so a way formed... we did not know that was what was happening or if there was something great or co-creative, or new or old occuring, we did not think that this was what our ancestors must have done, or what others have done in other traditions, or that it was what we had been taught to do, it was what we felt moved to do, deeply moved... and so we sat there on our knees and we prayed, we let our hearts feel the needs that surrounded us and came from deep within us and we gave them voice, and we wept and we found strength and we allowed our self to feel those parts of us that felt lost and we where given guidence, we allowed our selves to feel the parts of us that where wounded and we felt healing all at the base of the tree, surrounded by peoples pictures of animals, their candles their corn meal and tobacco and sage and palo santo, their votive's and horns and crystals.. all meaningful symbols of relationships that they honored... we sat with the tree... we sang the world tree song i had been given years ago for ceremonies we held with a visionary tree teacher in the past... and we gave the tree thanks and offerings, we gave the tree and all that live, because of and with the tree offerings with our prayers... we gave the tree gratitude. we felt the tree harbor us, lend us support, cradle our spirits, we felt its invitation to climb it and to fly from its branches to nestle deep in its roots beneath the soil... we felt the tree within us and we felt it growing...

this is the way we had been given by the land, by spirit, by the tree, by eagle, by our own hearts... and I am grateful for that.

So this solstice, i pray that for those of you on this path find that you have been moved to do what must be done for the well being of all...
and that new ways form so naturally and with such ease ...
blessings

That's beautiful bro, thank you for sharing that with us.

It's such a powerful moment, this window, these days of the solstice. From the opposite end of the planet it feels like such an amazing chance to reflect back on the events of the year that has passed here, and the year that will begin monday morning, when the sun rises again, and slowly but surely life is renewed and begins the slow progress towards birth once more. It's cold here today, has been for the past week, after not having had any cold or rain all year. The rains have begun, winter starts tucking us in under the sheets of our soul, and the sun moves into cancer, a special time for me personally, but also a time of home, family, those close to us.......

It's true. The dance that we dance as part of our larger community, our bioregion, all the persons in it, we move from the heart, from that which compels us, feels natural. Like you LLB and your community with the killing tree, the ceremony had been there all along, it was what had always called you. It's the awareness we take of how these things affect us, or how we affect them as well, that's what brings us closer to a very personal, intimate and dynamic relation with the land.

Tonight I'm a gonna go to the mountain, drink me a glass full of cold air, and when that sun comes up over the mountains, I'll strip down butt naked like the day my mama brought me to the planet, jump into a cold, cold, cold mountain stream, and let that fresh beauty cleanse me of the year that past, and greet the new day afresh.

I hope everyone on the tribe here has a wonderful solstice tomorrow. It's summer for you guys, so I'm guessing your celebrations are more about the day tomorrow. But here tonight, we ride to the depths of hades, so celebration begins at dark, heehee.....I pray that infinite blessings rain on the homes of every one here and all your loved ones and communities.....

    Happy Solstice!

    :)

wow, LLB. that was very moving and thank you so much for sharing such an amazing story and experience. trees are very, very dear to me; due to my own Happy Tree that i've shared on this tribe before. ceremonies and rituals work best for me when not practiced and structured. when they are acted out of feelings and spur-of-the-moments...that's when the magick of celebrations can occur as you witnessed first hand with the Killing Tree. this story got me all teary eyed and excited about the solstice this year. i'm normally very alone during the old holidays and thus, either celebrate it on my own terms/time. or i don't at all and just acknowledge it mentally. this year, i think i'll celebrate my relationship with Nature and with myself and have a little fun. i mean, it is Seattle; just outside the city is the sticks!
this also reminds me of my big brother. he too was originally a friend...but eventually became my brother. for whatever reason (probably just distance), we haven't spoken in several years. think i'm gonna give him a call and wish him a happy summer solstice since he practices the shamanic way. thanx again LLB; happy solstice!! ;)

no lightning yet... i might go off you never know felt i like i did this morning at least...

I went out today and went hunting for wood conchs i found some medicinal varieties ( they are all medicinal i think honestly)... some very nice artist conchs that i am carving the world tree rune into... which i am going to give as offerings to the killing tree today as well as give it to friends today as gifts.
I also have some nice drift wood i plan on carving today with the worldtree rune. i love that symbol.... just love it... i love how the ecopaganism movement in the UK has used it in ritual activism its wonderful.

your lightening was clear and succinct. I am a fan of plain speaking.

The world tree- in palo, to do a work, is to 'plant' it. usually, of course, with a stick. The tree that saves, is a prevalent theme in Bwiti. The clarity of The Wood is the gift of Bwiti.

i think all forms of conch are medicinal as well. do you do a lot of mushroom plugs in the forest there? it would make sense, with all that moisture in the air and forest.

Have you seen the movie 'The Fountain'? The story involves cancer, vision, and The World Tree (bolivian style). It is a beautiful and intense movie (if one has lost someone to cancer). If you haven't- please do. Its not so much the movie as a whole (which is good anyway) but the perspective and reverence of communing with the tree as a person. One of eternity and love, despite death. The tree that saves.

                thanks travis...

yeah its great walking through an old growth wood any time you see a downed tree thats where you go looking for good conks/conchs or polypore fungus that grows on dead and dieing trees. I am allways looking out for agarikon fungus... reshi as well.
it doesnt do much good to pulg a living tree adn most falled or dead trees are allready colonized by a rival fungus. as far as plugging is concerned the best bet is to cut fresh wood especially in the early spring late winter when the sap is starting to rise, right before buding then then plug then two weeks after cutting them and keeping them off the ground, to prevent rouge colonization from mycelium...

I have seen the fountain really amazing film... my sister in law and brother gave me the graffic novel for last christmas very nicely done.

and yeah you have seen the world tree rune or the dragonb rune as they call it in the dragon network ecopaganism scene in the UK. its on my blog/webpage.
if you havent seen it you have not read the blog!

im going to go out and look for more polypores. I drew solstice sybmbols and worldtree runes on them and now i am going to give them as offerings...
                have funguys!
                heheh
