Hi all,
I'm very new to this group, but absolutely fascinated. I've really enjoyed the posts I have read so far.
I wanted to ask about emotions as people.
I find myself spending more time trying to build relationships with the feelings that visit me on a regular basis (Fear, Failure, Grief, Wonder, etc). Classical mythology has personified many of these folk already (Aphrodite for example), but I'm more interested in moving away from personification in the anthropocentric sense, and building a more personal and immediate relationship.
Sometimes I write poems to them, trying to understand a bit more about who they are, and what their agenda is...
Sometimes it's nice to sit and say hello. It's interesting how they come and go. Maybe we can consider them as much a part of our bio-region as the hawthorn hedgerow and blackbird outside. We need to include our own bio/biology in the mix don't we?
Rumi's poem 'Guesthouse' reflects this idea well. www.gratefulness.org/poetry/...ouse.htm
Your thoughts and experiences please!
Julia xx

Re: Emotions as people
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 11:37 AMHi Julia! Welcome to the tribe!
I'm glad you've made your way over here and are resonating with it. It's a good idea for sure to read the introductory material on the home page, in there it addresses what you're mentioning regarding the difference between anthropomorphizing and recognizing non-human persons as persons. :)
As for the emotions, you know, I guess I've never really thought of emotions as persons, mostly because as a Cancer I'm a fairly emotional dude, and they just seem like something so in me.....but now that you mention it, they definitely seem to have an archetypal or universal personhood possibility to them......interesting.....

Re: Emotions as people
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 12:30 PMHello and wecome Julie.
It is indeed an interesting post. I think our bodies definatly are discreet little bio-regions and so emotions could well be seen as persons. i hadn't really thought of it before, but it seems to gel well with me. I really liked the poem you posted.....nice one! -

Re: Emotions as people
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 3:44 PMYeah, but also I got to thinking of emotions as things (persons?) existing beyond our body, so not just our body as a bioregion, but rather our body as the antenna that is capable of tapping into the emotions realm that already exists there regardless of our presence...I don't know....maybe....much like the idea of our minds as not producers of consciousness but rather the receptor of consciousness....so is it possible this is true of emotions as well? Hmmmm..... -

Thu, October 15, 2009 - 4:03 PMemotions as discrete entities can certainly jump from person to person or invade a whole room... smiles are contagious & one person in deeply foul mood can alter the emotional landscape of everyone around them...
