Quiz time!

I know we started an introductions thread awhile ago, but I thought this would be a good time for people to (re)introduce themselves, since we're between events. I thought instead of free form introductions a quiz format might be a little easier.

Name:
Age:
Location:

Do you have any pets?
Have you been out to a BIsect?
Are you into any other scenes or communities?
What's your favorite guilty pleasure food?
What's the favorite place you've ever lived?
Where do you fall on the Kinsey Scale? (Or, if you don't know what that means, what sexual orientation do you identify as?)
What would you rather be doing right now?
Anything else you want to say?

What "Type" of girl are you?

So I'm new to the group and thought I'd contribute with a little something funny I found while wasting time online. I'd have to say I'm a RAM/WINDOWS girl...how about you?

TYPES OF GIRLS

Hard Disk Girls:
She remembers everything, FOREVER.

RAM Girls:
She forgets about you, the moment you turn her off.

Windows Girls:
Everyone knows that she can't do a thing right, but no one can live without her.

Screensaver Girls:
She is good for nothing but at least she is fun!

Internet Girls:
Difficult to access.

Server Girls:
Always busy when you need her.

Multimedia Girls:
She makes horrible things look beautiful.

CD-ROM Girls:
She is always faster and faster.

Email Girls:
Every ten things she says, eight are nonsense.

Virus Girls:
Also known as "WIFE"; when you are not expecting her, she comes, installs herself and uses all your resources. If you try to uninstall her you will lose something, if you don't try to uninstall her you will lose everything.

Ok girls, sorry for the unspeakable delay, but pictures are FINALLY up!

http://bisect.org/event_photos.php

Also, I am quite excited to tell you -- Jen Sincero, author of "The Straight Girls Guide to Sleeping With Chicks" contacted me. She has been a big supporter of BIsect, sending girls over ever since she first heard of it. But now she's decided to throw her own party to help hopeful girls meet up!

Girl Party!
Saturday June 23rd, 8pm
1641 Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Venice, CA 90291

I absolutely ADORE her tagline: "Nothing happens to people who sit around at home".

So I was really excited to go and meet all of you at Here last night. I got all dolled up and everything! Sadly, I was not able to find anyone with a pin. Either the pins were so small that they were hard to see in the crowded place, or I am just blind. Well, I hope that those of you who made it out, had a good time and hopefully we can plan something else soon. I look forward to meeting you all.

That was loads of fun!

It's great to be in an environment where you're sure that any girl you're talking to is actually interested in girls.

Also really liked the venue and atmosphere- I don't know exactly why, but I felt like it was ten times easier to talk to new people there than at any other "girls night" thing.. Alissa, you must have brewed up some strong magic to get the girls to mingle like that. Great job!

I love my friends, but most of them are straight so it's difficult to find clubbing pals to go with.
So anybody want to scope hot chicks with me :)

Seeking roommates for Dinah Shore

I have a pool view room for Friday and Saturday night for Dinah Shore (March 30-31). Two of us are occupying one double bed and would be open to one or two more roommates in the other double. We'd prefer non-smoking roomies who don't snore or get drunk enough to puke in the room. I know, it's a lot to ask! ;-) The room was $209/night plus tax, so I'd appreciate a contribution towards that-- amount negotiable for the right roommates. If you're interested, drop me a note on Tribe and we can exchange info.

Join the Resistance: Fall In Love

Falling in love is the ultimate act of revolution, of resistance to today's tedious, socially restrictive, culturally constrictive, humanly meaningless world.

Love transforms the world. Where the lover formerly felt boredom, he now feels passion. Where she once was complacent, she now is excited and compelled to self-asserting action. The world which once seemed empty and tiresome becomes filled with meaning, filled with risks and rewards, with majesty and danger. Life for the lover is a gift, an adventure with the highest possible stakes; every moment is memorable, heartbreaking in its fleeting beauty. When he falls in love, a man who once felt disoriented, alienated, and confused will know exactly what he wants. Suddenly his existence will make sense to him; suddenly it becomes valuable, even glorious and noble, to him. Burning passion is an antidote that will cure the worst cases of despair and resigned obedience.

Love makes it possible for individuals to connect to others in a meaningful way it impels them to leave their shells and risk being honest and spontaneous together, to come to know each other in profound ways. Thus love makes it possible for them to care about each other genuinely, rather than at the end of the gun of Christian doctrine. But at the same time, it plucks the lover out of the routines of everyday life and separates her from other human beings. She will feel a million miles away from the herd of humanity, living as she is in a world entirely different from theirs.

In this sense love is subversive, because it poses a threat to the established order of our modern lives. The boring rituals of workday productivity and socialized etiquette will no longer mean anything to a man who has fallen in love, for there are more important forces guiding him than mere inertia and deference to tradition. Marketing strategies that depend upon apathy or insecurity to sell the products that keep the economy running as it does will have no effect upon him. Entertainment designed for passive consumption, which depends upon exhaustion or cynicism in the viewer, will not interest him.

There is no place for the passionate, romantic lover in today's world, business or private. For he can see that it might be more worthwhile to hitchhike to Alaska (or to sit in the park and watch the clouds sail by) with his sweetheart than to study for his calculus exam or sell real estate, and if he decides that it is, he will have the courage to do it rather than be tormented by unsatisfied longing. He knows that breaking into a cemetery and making love under the stars will make for a much more memorable night than watching television ever could. So love poses a threat to our consumer-driven economy, which depends upon consumption of (largely useless) products and the labor that this consumption necessitates to perpetuate itself.

Similarly, love poses a threat to our political system, for it is difficult to convince a man who has a lot to live for in his personal relationships to be willing to fight and die for an abstraction such as the state; for that matter, it may be difficult to convince him to even pay taxes. It poses a threat to cultures of all kinds, for when human beings are given wisdom and valor by true love they will not be held back by traditions or customs which are irrelevant to the feelings that guide them.

Love even poses a threat to our society itself. Passionate love is ignored and feared by the bourgeoisie, for it poses a great danger to the stability and pretense they covet. Love permits no lies, no falsehoods, not even any polite half-truths, but lays all emotions bare and reveals secrets which domesticated men and women cannot bear. You cannot lie with your emotional and sexual response; situations or ideas will excite or repel you whether you like it or not, whether it is polite or not, whether it is advisable or not. One cannot be a lover and a (dreadfully) responsible, (dreadfully) respectable member of today's society at the same time; for love will impel you to do things which are not "responsible" or "respectable." True love is irresponsible, irrepressible, rebellious, scornful of cowardice, dangerous to the lover and everyone around her, for it serves one master alone: the passion that makes the human heart beat faster. It disdains anything else, be it self-preservation, obedience, or shame. Love urges men and women to heroism, and to antiheroism to indefensible acts that need no defense for the one who loves.

For the lover speaks a different moral and emotional language than the typical bourgeois man does. The average bourgeois man has no overwhelming, smoldering desires. Sadly, all he knows is the silent despair that comes of spending his life pursuing goals set for him by his family, his educators, his employers, his nation, and his culture, without ever being able to even consider what needs and wants he might have of his own. Without the burning fire of desire to guide him, he has no criteria upon which to choose what is right and wrong for himself. Consequently he is forced to adopt some dogma or doctrine to direct him through his life. There are a wide variety of moralities to choose from in the marketplace of ideas, but which morality a man buys into is immaterial so long as he chooses one because he is at a loss otherwise as to what he should do with himself and his life. How many men and women, having never realized that they had the option to choose their own destinies, wander through life in a dull haze thinking and acting in accordance with the laws that have been taught to them, merely because they no longer have any other idea of what to do? But the lover needs no prefabricated principles to direct her; her desires identify what is right and wrong for her, for her heart guides her through life. She sees beauty and meaning in the world, because her desires paint the world in these colors. She has no need for dogmas, for moral systems, for commandments and imperatives, for she knows what to do without instructions.

Thus she does indeed pose quite a threat to our society. What if everyone decided right and wrong for themselves, without any regard for conventional morality? What if everyone did whatever they wanted to, with the courage to face any consequences? What if everyone feared loveless, lifeless monotony more than they fear taking risks, more than they fear being hungry or cold or in danger? What if everyone set down their "responsibilities" and "common sense," and dared to pursue their wildest dreams, to set the stakes high and live each day as if it were the last? Think what a place the world would be! Certainly it would be different than it is now and it is quite a truism that people from the "mainstream," the simultaneous keepers and victims of the status quo, fear change.

And so, despite the stereotyped images used in the media to sell toothpaste and honeymoon suites, genuine passionate love is discouraged in our culture. Being "carried away by your emotions" is frowned upon; instead we are raised to always be on our guard lest our hearts lead us astray. Rather than being encouraged to have the courage to face the consequences of risks taken in pursuit of our hearts' desires, we are counseled not to take risks at all, to be "responsible." And love itself is regulated. Men must not fall in love with other men, nor women with other women, nor individuals from different ethnic backgrounds with each other, or else the usual bigots who form the front-line offensive in the assault of modern Western culture upon the individual will step in. Men and women who have already entered into a legal/religious contract with each other are not to fall in love with anyone else, even if they no longer feel any passion for their marital partner. Love as most of us know it today is a carefully prescribed and preordained ritual, something that happens on Friday nights in expensive movie theaters and restaurants, something that fills the pockets of the shareholders in the entertainment industries without preventing workers from showing up to the office on time and ready to reroute phone calls all day long. This regulated, commercial "love" is nothing like the passionate, burning love that consumes the genuine lover. These restrictions, expectations, and regulations smother true love; for love is a wild flower that can never grow within the confines prepared for it but only appears where it is least expected.

We must fight against these cultural restraints that would cripple and smother our desires. For it is love that gives meaning to life, desire that makes it possible for us to make sense of our existence and find purpose in our lives. Without these, there is no way for us to determine how to live our lives, except to submit to some authority, to some god, master or doctrine that will tell us what to do and how to do it without ever giving us the satisfaction that self-determination does. So fall in love today, with men, with women, with music, with ambition, with yourself. . . with life!

One might say that it is ridiculous to implore others to fall in love, one either falls in love or one does not, it is not a choice that can be made consciously. Emotions do not follow the instructions of the rational mind. But the environment in which we must live out our lives has a great influence on our emotions, and we can make rational decisions that will affect this environment. It should be possible to work to change an environment that is hostile to love into an environment that will encourage it. Our task must be to engineer our world so that it is a world in which people can and do fall in love, and thus to reconstitute human beings so that we will be ready for the "revolution" spoken of in these pages so that we will be able to find meaning and happiness in our lives.

Hello all! I'm so glad that you've joined this tribe! Alissa has asked me to take over, so I'm now the moderator here. I would love to hear a little bit about each of you--something simple so that we can get a sense of each other. I believe that this kind of a community can be a wonderful and powerful source of support, but it has to begin with conversation.

So...I'll begin. My bio tells a fair amount about me, but I'll give you the Reader's Digest version. I'm a 31-year-old bi-poly woman with an amazing boyfriend (who is my primary). My partner and I are currently also dating a wonderful woman that I met at the first BiSect. I live in the Valley and teach high school English at a Los Angeles private school, and I'm currently working on a collection of essays about teaching.

I'm a recent transplant to LA (who isn't?!); I moved here last summer from Southeastern Connecticut, where I'd lived my whole life. I miss the Atlantic Ocean so very much--not because it's any better than the Pacific, but because it was so easy to get to. I lived in a coastal town and didn't have to fight the traffic to see it. I also miss autumn. Other than that, though, I'm so happy here in SoCal and have no plans to move back.

I am quirky, laid-back, and silly, and I love to laugh. I also *love* to travel.

I'm so looking forward to the next BiSect and to getting to know more of you!

I'm not quite ready to dive into working on the next BIsect, but I figured I could dip my little toe in by doing the photoshoot for the next flyer. So are there any local, psudo-professional photographers who'd like to donate their time? I've got some models lined up, and a pretty clear vision of the two shots I want to get, but I need someone who knows how to take good pictures.

Any takers?

Girlkissin'

First off, I want to make it clear to one girl reading this that this is not directed at her! It is a philosophical question I've been mulling over since the party, and I'm going to use my personal experience as examples in order to initiate the discussion.

Last time that I went to BiSect, I felt like there was one thing missing: girlkissin'. So I went determined to increase the amount of smooching going on, singlehandedly if need be. (I'd tossed around the idea of coming dressed as the "Kissing Fairy", but I didn't have the chance to get a costume together. I may try it for the next BiSect, though...)

I know that often in all-girl environments, and also among bisexual women, there is the "lesbian sheep" problem; while girls are comfortable with admiring each other from across a crowded room, or even having an intense conversation, we are so well-socialized not to take the initiative in a more physical manner that it can be hard to make any sort of sensual approach toward someone. (I once spent a year and a half "not-dating" a girl simply because neither of us could get the ovaries up to initiate that first kiss!)

It was important to me to embark on my smoochin' mission in as laid-back a fashion as possible, however. While being enthusiastic enough about the general kissing experience to make each woman I spoke to realize that, yes, I did find her pretty and desirable, I wanted to be just casual enough that whoever I was approaching would realize that I wasn't necessarily asking for their hand in marriage, or even anything more, EVER, than that one kiss. I also wanted to make it clear that I would not be upset or hurt if they said no.

The reactions I got were interesting. At least one person told me it broke the ice for them and allowed them to move on and kiss other girls. Yay! Mission accomplished! Some women seemed really enthusiastic. (Perhaps someday I'll get to kiss them some more. *g* ) Some seemed a bit flustered by my boldness.

One thing I realized over the course of the night, however, is that while I view kissing as something fun that doesn't necessarily need to lead to anything else, other people might view it a little more seriously. I was also, frankly, a little surprised because no one said no to me. On the one hand, it may mean that I'm just that devastatingly attractive. *grin* On the other, it may be a sign that women don't feel like it's okay to say no to other women, even if they don't want to say yes.

So, I'm curious. What goes through your mind when a girl asks if she can kiss you? And do you feel like you can turn her down? How hard do you find it to approach a girl who you'd like to kiss, and how does it differ from trying to approach a boy you're interested in? How do you view kisisng in general? Is it casual for you, or is it something you only do with people you'd like to get serious about? Are you hurt if a woman who kisses you at a party also goes on to kiss someone else?

Introducing...ourselves!

Hi you beauties all!
I am new to this tribe and the life style choice so I am responding to Kristin's suggestion that I introduce myself.

As we don't currently have any events online, I thought it might be good to set up latte lunches, times or coffee clatches at coffee beans or starbucks around town where various of us live to introduce ourselves, share a female moment happily for about an hour between 11 and 1:30pm any thursday. Would someone like to help organize the logistics here?
I live in the valley and frequent the westside alot so and I know others are on the other side of town. I am a newly wed ( 9 months now) musician, entrepreneur, teacher, red head in my still early 50's - I perform cello in chamber music groups and some orchestras. I have to go to Mexico and we are going to Rome in the fall - otherwise I am here in town. I love getting up very early going to the beach and jumping in for a splash! Always looking for fellow sea lovers and early morning types to join me !
I'd love to meet many of you of this tribe briefly and see what grows, would you?

Stay cool this hot summer!
hugs, xxooo

While promoting BIsect, I have come across many sites that I think might interest bi ladies out there. I thought this would be a great place to share them.

*** Bisexual.com

A well designed co-gender free community site for bisexuals. The site features fourms, event calendars, personal ads, chat and much more.

*** Girls Night Out
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/socalbisexualgirlsnightout/

So Cal Bisexual Girls' Night Out is a social group for bi women and lesbians over 21. They get together once a month for laughs and drinks at various venues around So Cal. The groups focus is on friendship, not dating or sex, but that doesn't mean you can't date members. *wink*

*** Grrl 2 Grrl

I know some girls are coming from far away, and might not want to drive alone. So I thought I'd start this thread for people who would like to do a rideshare.

See you July 22nd!

It's always nice to have a place to talk about your hopes and fears about an event like this. I'm starting this topic so that you can articulate anything on your mind or ask questions.

For example...I'm hoping to have as much fun as I had last time. I'd love to meet at least one woman that I feel a real connection and am attracted to (and vice versa!)...and hopefully exchange numbers and/or emails. One silly (but honest!) goal I have is to be a decent bartender, since I've never tended bar officially before. I'll be behind the bar from midnight until 1:30--so come flirt with me! I'll try not to spill anything on you.

How about all of you? Hopes? Goals? Fears? Questions?

Membership and blank profiles

When I started this tribe, I decided to make a policy that only girls with a profile picture up and a couple of friends could join. The idea was to help make sure that all the members were real people, not some fourteen year old boy making a throw-away account to peek into the girls locker room, or otherwise start trouble.

I recently realized though that a lot of girls might be joining tribe for the first time, just to get on the BIsect tribe. Those girls wouldn't have any friends yet and may not have gotten around to putting up a picture. Of course we still want to keep our community safe and comfortable, but we also don't want to shut members out.

After putting some thought into it, I decided that the best thing to do is make an exception for anyone who is already a member on bisect.org, and let them on as long as they promise to put a picture up right away.

So, if you are inviting a member to the tribe, let them know to include their email address in the tribe membership request so we can verify that they're on bisect.org. Or better yet, add them as a friend right away and bug them to get their picture up. Cuz lets face it, it's a lot more fun to look around the room and see a bunch of lovely faces than it is to see a bunch of question mark boxes!

Also, let me just say a big thank you to Kristin for being such a wonderful
moderator! You rock girl!

If you've already printed your BiSect tickets, could you please print them again? There was a glitch that left "paid" off of them originally. It's been fixed now, but reprinting any tickets printed before 7/10 would cut down on confusion at the door.

Thanks!

Why BiSect?

I wanted to start a discussion about why BiSect is such a powerful and important gathering. It's a safe place for bi women, whether poly or not, which is very difficult to find. We often find ourselves caught between two worlds and judged by both. The March BiSect this year was a revelation to me--the first time I felt truly safe to just be me. I knew that I was surrounded by bi and bi-friendly women, and I didn't have to worry about someone thinking I should just "make up my mind".

I'm very excited for the July BiSect!

Why is BiSect exciting for you?
