compression for guitar

I'm starting here with a compression pedal as I just was given one by my daughters for Father's Day. It's an MXR Dyna Comp. I haven't had much time to play it yet but I did notice some hum at high volumes. Anybody have or tried one of these babies? I'll talk more about it after I play with it for a bit. I'd sure like to know what you all think about compression gear for the guitar.

slide players really benefit from using them.
i use mine for a solo booster, keep the comp low and just use it as a clean boost.
too much comp ya lose the attack of the note, ....even tho its fatter , be careful with that.
i need it hese days cause im using solid state amps that have less natural compression.
with a tube amp they can be used to overdrive the preamp tubes which gives more compression anyway thats why i use it as a boost more than a comp. its subtle
    hope this helps

thanks! I'm mainly interested in long sustain notes without hum. I haven't tried the compression direct into my computer via a mixer.
