Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.

Yet another (forward of a forward of a forward of a) report from the
playa on outlandish conditions.

-Josh

> FWD: Playa Update - Received from Sarah the Cookie -
> Today!
>
> WIND WARNING. . .
>
> Greetings from the playa where I am happy and well and
> holded up in my car. I dont want this to deter anyone
> from coming, as it's still a blast - but..batten down
> the hatches kids, cause the wind is the worst I've
> seen in the 12 years I have been coming here.
>
> For those of you around when the big wind hit last
> year and took our camp down, that is the way it has
> been the bulk of the time - really that windy, mostly
> non stop. The airstream is shaking and rocking and my
> tent is tied to every rack and bumper and hitch the
> truck & airstream have, and I'm still unsure if it's
> going to hold up (one pole already snapped). The white
> out's are lasting a long time, some well over 5 hours.
>
> I hear it has been like this for weeks, dont know if
> it will continue through the event. but the green man
> is about nature, so be prepared for the force of
> nature to remind us how small we are! The good news is
> that it's warm thus far, even in the middle of the
> night. MIkey & Sarah - the shade structure we have
> planned probably isnt going to fly (or is going to
> fly). certainly not with the fabric we are planning, i
> just passed some like it and it's not doing well even
> with the holes. however, the garage tents around here
> seem to be holding up when they have no walls & are
> tied down every few feet - so if you feel like
> grabbing one from costco, that could work.
>
> or we can just cool off in center camp since it is so
> close (1 block). who knows, maybe the wind will
> subside. in case it doesnt, i suggest that if you are
> debating between a tent or a van/suv, you pick the
> car. be sure to put everything in bins that have
> locking lids, and in ziplocks inside those. if your
> tent has any open netting areas that do not zip closed
> with a solid fabric, i suggest glue gunning a fabric
> onto them, closing them up permanently, before you
> come here (fabric on the outside of the tent, so it's
> between the tent & the rainfly).you can always cut it
> off later. mine has a few open ones and theres a good
> 1/8 inch layer of dust inside, on top of the bed, the
> floors, everywhere. had to sleep with dust mask last
> night. too much to keep up with & too late to close
> them off.
>
> the wind/dust is coming from the same direction as
> always so be sure to park your cars in a way that
> blocks it from anything you put up. and lots of
> bungees, ive been through 20 just for my tent. phil -
> great decision in sleeping in the rider truck. i think
> that is all to tell - just a whole lot of wind. will
> update you if it stops. am still having a total blast,
> the wind is part of the fun for sure, and look forward
> to seeing you'll in a week! cma, please bring glue gun
> so i can seal up my tent.
>
> PS - wind reminders -fully enclosed goggles for day &
> night (not only dark ones), things that light up so u
> can be seen, bungees, rope, 2 ft long reebar - more
> than you think you need, heavy lotion, lip stuff,
> babywipes, giant sheet or tarp or something to cover
> all the stuff in your tent (to stop dust from getting
> into your bed), and lots of soft towels - more than
> you think you need. xx

Staking down Costco Carports

I just bought a 10 foot by 20 foot Costco Carport (I got one of the last ones at the local Costco). It looks like this:
http://homeandoutdoorliving.zoovy.com/product/COCCARPORT

I plan on putting down a tarp floor (two 10 x 10 foot tarps), staked down, and my two tents (and all my stuff) inside (the tents will be staked too).

My question is this: how to stake the carport down properly. I’m getting 18” rebar, and I plan on putting a 10 in steel tent spike in each of the 3 holes in the plastic feet on the bottom of the 8 pole legs of the carport.

What I can’t see is where to attach the ropes to the sides, front, and back of the carport to stake it down to withstand the high winds. The picture on the box seems to show some rings on the tarp covering, but it strikes me as stronger to attach the ropes to the metal poles, either the legs or the ones that run lengthwise along the top sides, or perhaps at the junctions on top were the legs meet the side poles. The problem I see is that the top awning comes down a bit over those top side poles, and I wonder if I can run ropes down and out under the awning. I also don’t know how far to put the rebar; in other words what angle the side ropes and front & back ropes should be away from the structure? Steep, or 45 degrees? (Steep would be better as far as the overlap of the tarp goes.)

Also, someone in my camp suggested cutting slits in the side tarps to allow wind to blow through it to reduce the wind pressure. I’m not thrilled about that (it will allow more dust and cold night winds in) but I’ll do it if it’s advisable. If I do cut slits, how large should they be, and would it be good to put strips of duct tape at the top and bottom of each strip to prevent the slits from tearing further?

Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks in advance.

“> Do you think BM will be the meca?”

I went to Burning Man for the first time in 2006. I knew it well from friends and employees. But I enjoyed experiencing it first hand for a reason that does not come across in photo or stories (in fact, while I love photography, BM manages to truly evade its usefulness as a form of documentation, it simply must be experienced first hand).

The funny thing is I stood there and thought to myself (while noticing a slight lack of American flags) how truly great America is that we have this. The “funny part” is that a lot of Americans would stand in that exact same place and say…”What the hell happened to America?” Isn’t America great in that those people are free to have that opinion too? : )
I’m a real patriot, perhaps because I was not born here, and I have seen a lot of places outside of America. Every place I have ever been has had something endearing, the warm people of Greece, the rich texture of Italy, the amazing use of space in Japan. But, BM represents what adult minds can do when they shed themselves of the arbitrary rules of being an adult. For this reason I brought my 13 year old son, and aside from some light duties to support the camp (which he did an amazing job of) I sent him out to explore, live, enjoy, and learn. He did an amazing job of that too.

He and I had this great moment out in the middle of the playa. We stood there and I asked him what his thoughts were…he said “I want to bring ALL my friends here next year.” Uh, er…sadly I had to explain to him that the odds were this would not happen, that the parents of his friends probably don’t think as we do, and would not allow them to come. He dropped his head, and this wave of sadness crossed his face, as it did for me as well.

If a great picture can be taken at BM, my friend Phil can, here is one of my favourite BM pictures ever, taken of one of our camp mates:
It just says it all…
can still get you in, they are wrong.

Looking for a fun way to Participate?
CALLING ALL GREETERS!!

The time has come once again to staff the gate for Toast 2007. We need
volunteers to welcome people to the burn, take their tickets, and run down
the essentials (where to camp, leave no trace, etc.) Greeting is a great way
to get to know people and to spread the hot buttery goodness of
participation all over your Toast experience. If you're interested, reply to
Tall Tom at bozomatli@gmail.com and he'll send you the schedule.

Feel free to let Tom know if you need more info.

---------------------------------------------------------
Calling Rangers!

Salutations Friends!

As our Arizona community has grown, so has the need for a more
organized way to look after ourselves. This year we are trying
something new. The time has come for Arizona to enhance our own
ranger group to support our regional events.

The Toast Rangers are looking for volunteers to help keep Toast! and
other Arizona regional events safe. The Toast Rangers are burners who
volunteer to act as rangers for our AZ events. We help orient folks,
hold fire and safety perimeters, meditate disputes between
participants, and help in medical issues. Being a Toast Ranger does
not commit you to Rangering at Burning man.

Toast Rangers are critical to the functioning of the AZ regional
events. Without them, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for
these events to take place. Being a Toast Ranger is a way to share in
the responsibility of hosting our regional events.

For Toast! we are looking for people who can commit to Rangering for
one or two six-hour shifts during the event, and to help with the
safety perimeters on Saturday night. In addition, we ask that all
rangers attend one of two orientation meetings. The first meeting is
being held on Sunday, April 22nd in Tempe AZ at 4:00pm - 6:30pm. This
get-together is for someone who wants to be a Toast Ranger and be
ready when they get to Toast! The second option is to attend the
Black Rock Ranger orientation which takes place at Toast! on Friday at
10am-3pm. This second meeting is more detailed and covers information
necessary to ranger at Burning man itself, as well as at Toast!. Both
meetings will give you the information you need to be a Toast Ranger.

For more info about the Toast Rangers, check out our web site:

http://toast-rangers.org/

If are interested or have any questions, please contact Blank at
blank@wink-works.com. I?ll send you the site info for the training on
the 22nd.

Yours in Dust,

- AZ Burner/ Toast Ranger Co-coordinator
----------------------------------------------------------
Creating Art for Toast?

let us know about it so we can let others know. We love art and we already
know of several large scale art projects coming to Toast. Some of it is a
surprise , some of it we have mentioned in previous issues of Burn Toast. if
you want to let others in on what is happening with your art let us know
ASAP. Drop us a note at gary@toast-town.org so we can get the word out.

----------------------------------------------------------

Educating the new People.

Our events and culture are based on several simple customs. We hope that you
will take the time to educate any new people who have never been to a burner
event about how we interact at our events.

A few tips to help.

Leave No Trace! Nobody is here to pick up after you. You must do that
yourself. Don't let it hit the ground and that includes Cigarette butts. You
must come prepared to haul out everything you brought in including your camp
trash. Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no Trace! We are about Radical Self
Reliance, being prepared is part of that.

Respect for alternative lifestyles and cultures is Mandatory! We celebrate
diversity and being different.

At NO TIME is obnoxious or abusive behavior allowed. Being intoxicated is
not an excuse and WILL NOT get you off the hook for it the next day when you
sober up.

This link to our core values, http://azburners.org/corevalues.htm it will
give you an idea how we interact as a group. Please take the time to read it
before you come and educate yourself and the people who are coming with you.

----------------------------------------------------------

That is about it for now! More to come in the next couple weeks!

DJ's - Especially with a Latin, or Caribbean, or downright exotic theme. If you can get booties movin', we want to talk to you.

Musicians - Do you play Jazz, Lounge Music, Flamenco, or anything that would feel right at home in a swanky lounge? If so, The Havana Room sounds like the right venue for you.

Dancers - Salsa, Merengue, Samba, Swing, Burlesque, or anything exotic (such as Polynesian, or Josephine Baker's Banana Dance). If you have elaborate costumes (such as Carnival type of costumes or Burlesque outfits) then we want you dancing on our raised stage, and taking walks down our catwalk.

Stage Talent - Comedians, Sword Swallowers, Magicians, or anything else you might find in a variety show in the 50's or 60's is welcome here. Just ask, and if it fits the vibe of The Havana Room, welcome to our stage.

Anyone Else - We are welcoming solid people to join our camp, so if you're not afraid to roll up your sleeves then relax with a mojito and fine cigar afterwards, then you've found the right camp. Let's start a dialogue.

Here's a description of The Havana Room
In keeping with the "Green" theme, we are creating a paradise in the middle of the desert, inspired by lush Havana of days gone by. So, break out your leisure suit or bunny ears, saunter in like James Bond, Michael Corleone, or one of the Rat Packers, take a seat at the cigar bar, roulette table, or poker pit, and enjoy the show featuring salsa, burlesque, and more. In addition to the show, music ranges the gamut from the Buena Vista Social Club, Bebel Gilberto, even Hooverphonic. Guest DJ's will be spinning everything from theme music to whatever fits the vibe.
I just received a "save the date" card for my cousin's wedding, and of all dates, he had to pick September 1st (the day the man burns). Fuck. I'm pretty bummed about the timing but what can you do? The wedding's in Colorado, so I think what I'm going to do is drive up to BRC and spend the week there, and leave on Friday to fly from Reno to Denver, do the wedding, and afterwards, fly back to Reno and then drive home. Not sure how else to do it.

This year I missed the temple burn and waffle burn, and vowed not to leave early in '07. Now it looks like I'm going to miss the Man burning as well. I guess the only upside is that at least I'll miss the exodus.

What is the best food to bring?

We've already established that we all brought to much, but what were the goods you did indulge in?

My little pouches of jerky did me good out on the playa when I didn't feel like riding all the way back to camp (we were on the outer rim) but I can't really think of anything else that I should for sure bring this year. Is there anything you were glad you brought plenty of, or wish you had?

And my first order of business is the idea of mine to merge this virgins tribe with the 2007 virgins tribe. Why do we need a tribe for each year? Virgins are virgins, and I find that often, the virgin from last year has some really good tips for the virgin for this and next year.

But...
I'm not going to do a damn thing unless you guys want me to.

The way I see it, the only good reason to keep this separate is because we have all grown together, and we're a little bit of family now. Of course, there isn't anything that says we can't have both tribes, and those people that think they can help the 2007 (or 2008, etc) virgins can certainly join those lists too.

So anyhow...

Those of you who were there know what I mean - the entire night was magical. Eskmo was the second DJ to play that night, and he did an unbelievable job of kicking things up several notches. He graciously allowed me to share the set, and I've finally gotten the set encoded in "enhanced" MP3 format. Play it in itunes or an ipod with a color screen, and you'll see photos from the Temple Of Breaks as the set plays. It's also embedded with a link back to his site - do take some time to check that out as well.
Thanks Trilo and Christina for your exceptional contributions, and to all of you for the energy and drive you've infused into this participatory experience we all share; whatever Burning Man has brought to your life, pay it forward in terms of building and fostering that sort of community and opportunity for self-expression in the world you inhabit the other 51 weeks.

I felt right at home, right away.

Anyway, after we got cleared by the DPW folks and before we actually entered BRC itself, there was that stop where we handed over our tickets (which I promptly lost) and got loved upon by faux-fur-clad too-fucking-cheerful-for-4-am greeters. They found out I was a virgin and hauled me out of the car for ringing a gong.

Did anyone else get to do that? What the hell was up with that? I have to admit I did enjoy it and was giggling the whole time, since, really, when else can you whack on a loud gong in the middle of a vast desert bed before dawn? But is that par for the course? To make virgins do various little rituals?

Someone took a picture, but I have no idea who. I bet it'll turn up somehow, anyway.

Juliana, yours really hit home: a lot of people are calling/emailing me wanting to know how the virgin came out. You mentioned it was like trying to explain color to a blind person. omg, Yes!! Not only am I exhausted and trying to re-acclimate, I just don't even know if it really happened. Does it feel surreal to you? Also, ummm....I can't stop eating. Some survival instinct took over and this monster is making me eat everything in sight!
Next: the dreams. They are the craziest I have ever had. And a lot of confusion: I woke up last night in my house that I have lived in for over a year and looked around thinking it was my tent!!! I wondered how I had nailed a painting to the wall of my tent.

Thank you again all you veterans for your bits of advice. I will in turn 'pay it forward' to next year's virgins. Just got home a couple houra ago - had car trouble in Reno but all is OK now.

Had a lot of amazing interactions on the playa, talked to a bunch of artists, hugged many many Belgians. Wow was that thing ever beautiful - I had to leave on Sunday afternoon, and I'm very conflicted about that. On one hand, I don't know if I coud have handled seeing such a beautiful sculpture destroyed, but on the other hand (pyro me) I bet it went out in one hell of a blaze of glory.

I arrived on Monday and had a very rough few first days, felt queasy a lot, was pounding water and Gatorade all day, hence peeing a lot, had wind trouble with my structure at first, etc. The week definitely improved for me as it went on, although the overall energy does seem to change a lot.

Much too much to say or tell or write right now. Love you all, though!

Hi All!

The Miss Black Rock City photo page has been updated to include photos from our three on playa events: the Tiara Making Workshop, the Preliminary Event, and the Main Event. Check them out at http://www.missblackrockcity.com/photos.htm Big thanks to Ryan Hayes for the Prelim + Main Event photos. My good friend Travis Ortiz, who shot the MBRC04 + MBRC05 events, couldn't be with us this year. Thanks for stepping up, Ryan! The photos are fabulous.

TIARA WORKSHOP
Big thanks to Atelier Rusette's Miyong and Trixie, as well as the resident MBRC tiara expert, Miss Kelly Schoen. We had quite a diverse crowd, we had everyone from princesses who served lemonade, to a visit from from Mister Green, Mister Blue, and Mister Orange! I very much enjoyed seeing every one's creations, so much that if you missed the event, don't worry - we will likely repeat it often. Although I don't know how I will cart 5000 chinelle stems around me without Hi-Life there to pack up the bike!

PRELIMINARY EVENT
Thanks to Alien Underground for hosting this event! And mad props to all of our participants for putting yourselves out there as you did, it was wonderful to see you all. This event was a highlight for me, I barely noticed the dust storm that was knocking things down around us. Big thanks to our fabulous audience, and to Miss Black Rock City 2004 for bringing back her talent for us to enjoy, once more!

MAIN EVENT
Disorient was a fabulous host, as always. Among the many, many people who helped with this event out were: Leo, The Eye, Jason 1969 (stage), and Mikio (DJ). The MBRC logo was provided by Smash, and the banner was provided by Slater! Miss Dixie 2005 stage managed, and saved my ass on several occasions. Not That Dave wrangled the judges, who were an unruly bunch as usual, egged on of course by Miss Pinky and Miss Will Fuck the Judges.

Warm thanks to the participants, once again. Everyone who showed up got stage time, I believe. Miss Serenity 2005 aka Miss Apocalypse 2006, you have a special place in my heart as always, I look forward to seeing you again!

As some of you have heard that we have big changes in mind for our future events. We hope to combine the flow of the preliminary event with the idea of the main event, and we hope to be a bit more literal with our "everyone wins" concept. Suggestions are welcome! I have one more chain stitched sash, however, purchased from the same makers as the Miss USA sashes just before the burn. It is ready to be gifted at the first ever Miss Camp Dionysia - Pageant of People who Feel its Okay to be Ugly Sometimes (I need a break from the Self-Proclaimed Beauty thing!)

There are many more people to thank: my friends, the Texans, my friends the Texans, etc. But this message is too long already, I hope you all know that if you did anything for me and the project in this year or the past years, I thank you!

Much love,

--

My leather steel-toe boots are very, very playaified. I've been going through my tack cleaning supplies from when I was an equestrian, picking out leather cleaning goodies, but I still have a question that I can't figure out the answer: how does alkaki dust affect quality leather steel-toe boots? And how to clean for that? Would vingear impact the leather negatively? And what about the soles and screws and eyelets and such? I want to protect the integrity of these boots as much as I can, since I can't afford to replace them (these aren't your usual Doc Martens) and it took me forever to break them in perfectly.

The shoelaces are already shot to hell and disintegrating in my hands, so I already know the answer about *that* aspect.

Okay, so this is the event that my camp (Space Island) organizes and pulls together each year. It's on Wednesday night, at Dark Thirty (shortly after sunset), out at the temple. Here's the plan...

After night falls on Wednesday night, we load the Space Wench with gear and set sail for the temple. Upon arrival, we drop a sound system on the dust and essentially "steal" the temple, switching on the power and transforming the Temple Of Hope into the Temple Of Breaks. We then serve up some of the greatest DJ's in the world and dance all through the night. As an added bonus, you'll be at the temple to watch what I'm willing to bet will be the most amazing sunrise you've ever seen. The temple has historically been one of, if not the most beautiful and ornate structures on the playa. It also spends its days being a somber place of reflection and honoring the dead, before it gets burned on Sunday night. As an Irishman and a space pirate, I'm a firm believer in honoring the dead through celebrating life, and dancing the night away with friends just seems perfect to me.

As the event has evolved, it's grown to also become a sort of parade of art cars throughout the night. BRC has hundreds upon hundreds of the most magnificent mutant vehicles. Through both word of mouth of our little event over the years as well as people stumbling upon the Temple Of Breaks (art cars often cruise around at night, bringing passengers out to the temple), it's become something to see in its own right. Last year, we had arguably the best performance of the week from Miracle Gro (the giant 80 foot flower)

Good plan, eh? Well, with no Space Wench on the dust this year you can imagine that the plan was in jeopardy. Rumors that there would be no Temple Of Breaks started circulating over the last couple weeks, which is why I changed my profile pic. For Space Island and the Los Angeles Breakbeat Association, this event has always been a huge collaboration. I've been scrambling for the last couple weeks to try and find a way to make this all happen. There are still some details to be worked out (specifically I'm still trying to get enough generators, so if you know of someone who's got a 3,000-5,000 watt generator they'd be willing to let us use on Wednesday night *please* let me know), but this event WILL happen.

With the help and support of The Do Lab, Abundant Sugar, Mekka Oasis, The Purgatory Cruisers, Tucker, and of course LABA, I'm very proud to be able to say that not only will there be a Temple Of Breaks, but it will likely be our most amazing event to date. 20,000 watts of sound (or more), and amazing performances by some of the world's best. Plus an incredible parade of mutant vehicles. I'm intentionally not naming the DJ's on the lineup, I'll leave that to each individual performer to publicly talk about their involvement. Message me privately if you really want to know info about the lineup, but come to our soiree because this sounds like a great idea and a wonderful celebration. I hope to see you all out there!
does anyone know why the exodus took 10+ hours for BM folks to let us leave the gates? Our camp packed up and was in the car at 10am...yet we weren't allowed to leave until at 9pm. Although we were frustrated, a great group of folks served up bevy's and hot dogs in true burner style. After a few iced drinks and food, things got better.

I’ve got connecting flights, which increases the odds. Flying into Reno from NYC with a connecting flight in Dallas. I’m crashing at a hotel in Reno Monday night and heading to the playa Tuesday morning. Has anyone ever heard of airlines delivery lost luggage to the playa??

When most folks come back from Burning Man, they’re looking forward to a warm bed and a good shower. Unfortunately, I was greeted by a shit-storm that frustrated these goals. Literally – a shit storm.

While I was in Black Rock City, the sewer line broke and flooded my house with raw sewage. Both my roommates had already moved out by the time I got back (thankfully they didn’t try to reach me), and the property management company was trying to blame it on us. Any other day of the year, this would probably have been a crushing blow. But not today.

My roommates and I spent the day cleaning out our place, and not getting along with the property management company. Then the landlord arrives. In his Burning Man perimeter truck. Nothing could have been a better sign. As soon as he showed up, we were able to clear the whole thing up: he’s letting us move out and we discovered that there really wasn’t all that much property damage to our stuff (though the apartment is a different story.)

So, my girl and I are both without homes, without jobs, and without a lot of money in our pockets. But thanks to the fires that warmed us in the desert, we’ve still got it made.
