I am getting SOOO sick of people bringing up how I interrupt people when they're talking, like it's some rare thing. Okay, I have ADD. So, I do do that sometimes. I admit it. But you know, from what I'm observed...EVERYBODY does it. Some more then others, true. But in the past few months I've been watching, it's been pretty damn common. Mostly it happens person to person, sometimes on the phone. ( I take calls at a customer service center. We get reprimmanded when we "interrupt" people. If we waited until some of these people STOPPED talking, we'd have 20 minute calls. Don't these people BREATHE???)
And my FAMILY, whom I love dearly, often brings it up to me. What they don't seem to realize, is that most of them do it JUST as much as I do. Seriously. I've paid careful attention. See, I can do that sometimes...anyway, I'm getting pretty tired of being treated like some awful, inconsiderate person. Hypocrisy drives me nuts. And I just needed to BMC about it...

Wed, June 20, 2007 - 6:00 PMYeah, or the person goes off on a whole different tangent, and you feel like an idiot for going back to a previous topic... -

Thu, June 21, 2007 - 6:43 PMHah! I love it! I don't think my family would get the point, considering they don't seem to realize they ARE interrupting... -

Re: Words in edgewise...
Thu, June 21, 2007 - 9:18 PMThis happened today...hubby was going on about something interesting but I had to interrupt him about something that really couldn't wait, we were in the car and it was something on the road, so he got mad and stopped talking..... that really pisses me off. If I had waited until he was done we would have been home! -

Re: Words in edgewise...
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 3:51 AMYeesh, some people seem to believe that when they're speaking, their words are all that matter and even if there was another car barrelling at you about to hit you, nope, you still shouldn't interrupt them. I know the type of moment.
I guess in general, we all think our own words are the most important. Often not the case tho.

Re: Words in edgewise...
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 12:12 AMOK....clearly you are frustrated but just because <EVERYBODY does it> doesn;t make it right. By interrupting people you are letting them know that you don't value waht they are saying. I used to do this a lot until a past partner of mine snapped me out of it and - yes - now I DO get VERY unhappy when people don;t have the courtesy to let me finish a sentence. It indicates that you aren't listening, that you don't value the other person's opinion enough to let them finish their sentence and that you think what you have to say is more important.
Now - in a call centre environment, different story. You know when someone is on a rant and you need to stop them to make a point. If it is a conversation with a friend, family or anyone you value in your life you owe them the courtesy to not interrupt them.
Simple. -

Re: Words in edgewise...
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 6:30 PMMaybe it doesn't make it right, but that doesn't mean it's wrong either, or that the pot can call the kettle black either. Should I let someone talk even if it means I never get to put in my two cents? Sometimes, yes, I probably get to the point where I want to make MY point, and if they won't shut up and let me, yes, I may interrupt them after, oh, 5 minutes of NOT being able to talk. (usually it's not intentional though). Yet the fact remains, there are people out there who almost never allow someone else to talk, because they think what THEY have to say is "more important" & they like to hear themselves talk so much. It's just as rude to not allow people to talk as it is to interrupt someone, in my opinion. Now I'm not saying one should go out and interrupt everyone, but to me it's simply not a black and white issue.
Even more frustrating is when you're in a conversation with several people, and you wait patiently to make your point...and by the time you GET a chance, they've moved on thru two new topics and you feel like an idiot for going back in the conversation. My family does that a lot. Conversation just shouldn't be that hard. Oh, and I just love the people who don't let you finish a sentence...then accuse you of interrupting. -

that does suck arse, I must admit, but I reckon if youre in a family situation all rules are dropped....you muscle in a talk over as many of 'em as you can to get your point across :) in my opinion that is.
I'm not interested in talking to people who hold conversations they way you described and generally won't put myself into that situation. I don't want to be around people who <almost never allow someone else to talk, because they think what THEY have to say is "more important" & they like to hear themselves talk so much.> -

Re: Words in edgewise...
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 5:02 PMOkay VENT TIME.
What really gets me, what REALLY gets me, is how people call my customer service line, and DON'T LET ME TALK and they ask all these questions-when If they'd let me ask what *I* needed to ask and say what I needed to say, they'd save both my time and theirs (and most customer service phone agents do have their calls timed) and their questions would be ANSWERED! When you call a customer service line and talk to an agent, chances are your questions are ones they get a hundred times or more a day-so they know what you're likely to ask so give them a #@$%^& chance. They may not like what I have to say, but it's totally unreasonable to expect a huge company like the one I work for to customize their services for every one of their millions of customers, yet the majority of the calls I get are people who think *THEY* deserve special treatment, regardless if it would inconvience others.
And btw, YES those automated phone systems suck, no one likes them, but often THEY can answer your questions too.
