THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $300, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend (May 22-26); and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

I could go on and on, but our web site is up, with the first design drawings for the Man, pictures of art grant projects and theme camps. We have a list serve / forum too. So visit the web site at wickermanburning.org for much more info.

This four star resort includes all the amenities one has come to expect from a four star resort (clean sheets, helpful staff, nicely creased fresh roll of toilet paper, little bars of soap) as well as 3 go-cart racing tracks, bumper cars, a miniature golf course, 160 ft. human slingshot, and the 180 ft. Ultimate Rush Sky Coaster insanity bungee of doom. We will be taking them all over.

Lineup is being finalized and is scheduled to include a wide variety of the best the playa has to offer including some really good live sets. Performance art, fire, go go's, and such are included as well and anyone interested in lighting themselves on fire or freaking out in some way on stage is welcome.

This is going to be the most epic pool party ever, and we hope to see you there. We expect this event to sell out, presale tickets are available through at brownpapertickets.com at $20 per day and will be $25 at the door if there are any left. Capacity is about 3000 people.

Reserve your rooms now, it's not too late to cancel at other hotels, if you mention the Nexus pool party you will get the discounted rate. Rooms generally book between $89-$129 but we have gotten them locked down at $59-$69/room and they are really nice rooms. Visit grandsierraresort.com for details

Tickets will be $25 at the door each day or $40 for both days.

Secure your flotation device and strap on your flippers it's time to wash the dust off.

also bring your fire equipment to play around the pool at night!

BMIR thinks it's a great idea, and so do I. What is the feeling about this? The click track will NOT be a CLICK, click, click, click track. I'm a drummer and I hated having that in my ear for so many years. The track would be recorded organic drum loop of about 16 bars. We would pass out cheap walkman tuned to BMIR, I think 10 - 20 or so would do it. Any suggestions or comments?

Here's the specifics, though:
1) It must be delivered to a business
2) $250 minimum order
3) It may put you on a DEA meth watch list.

Also, it can be picked up from their site in northern california (to save shipping).

And possibly the best news of all, they're willing to work with Ace hardware (or whoever) to get this on retail shelves. I'm not sure I can do this by the Burn, but we may have it there by the end of the year. And at the bulk Ace would buy in, it may run less than white gas.

It seems to me that the odds are about even that, if you're carrying a towel for my group, you'll be using it for someone not in our group. That is to say only about half the fires my safeties have put out have been our own.

Now, with my group, I like to insure that we have a wide variety of equipment at our disposal and have gone (WAY) out of the way to make new ones (like last year's dragon). However in a smaller, or more specialized group, they may not have the opportunity for variety training that my group has.

Okay, in previous years, the various conclave members were offered staff level tickets (read: cheap). But last year, we started competing for slots in conclave. People pointed out that it seemed unfair to ask conclave groups to work on routines for months, then inform them late in July that they weren't going to get staff ticket prices because they didn't make it.

So, this year, Crimson announced these "low income" tickets [FC announce Mar 22nd], which are at the staff level ticket price, but require members to write a letter why they thought they deserved one. I interpreted this as the replacement for the old staff price ticket system.

It is not.

It's a supplement. If your group makes it into conclave this year, we will be able to purchase low-cost staff tickets as per the usual part of the conclave experience. [certain restrictions apply]

Thanks to Sizzle for digging up this clarification.

okay, so after last year, Crimson asked me not to do combat again. Mind you this is a crowd favorite. We get all sorts of yells and screams during this part of our show. But, without real reason, Crimson vetoed it. Okay, fine, Her show, right? So, I chose to make lemonade and started up the friday night fire fights.

So, we're developing choreography for this year and a cluster of folks put forth the effort to build a flaming maypole. They mentioned it on out list (which Crimson is on), and she approached *them* off list and asked that they not do it. So, now we have a dilemma, on the one hand, they've been asked not to do it, on the other hand Crimson has repeatedly said that I can do what I want with LAFC. cool, I've seen the Maypole. I've seen it burn, and I've seen it set up and taken down. I know it works, I know it doesn't take up much room. I know it could work. Crimson doesn't. But before we could send her footage, she has decided that it's not welcome in the great circle. She doesn't even want to see it in action.

Thank you to everyone working hard to make the following theme camps happen!!!

The Ka-tet (Earth Guardian Base Camp): We are a group of friends brought together to create a camp of fun and openess. We will have a participation dome with games tounaments during the day and projection art at night. It will be very interactive and will even have times for other people to present their art.

The Laser Dome: In a nut shell our camp is a psychodelic laser experiance contained within a 42' diameter 5/8 geodesic dome, with a 18x20 tent enterance. Inside the dome is a 7000 watt sound system, with 8 medium powered red & green lasers, and other intelligent lighting. Our dj's provide a healthy mix of trance, house, breaks, and hip-hop. Also every day at dusk we project psychodelic movies inside the dome during what we call Cryptik Theater.

Hum 'n Hug North: Wander into our realm where a gazillion musical instruments are everywhere waiting to be picked up and played, waiting to have strains of music of many sorts coaxed out of them. Jamming. Consorting. Communing. Fun. Come play - come jam - come hug! Originally started at Transformus, the Southeast Regional Burn, the Ohio contingent of the group looks forward to being a part of Scorched Nuts!

Camp Happy Hour: It's always Happy Hour with us! We provide concoctions of all varietys to quench your thirst. We have a comfy chill space, a little bit of lawn art, and tons of fun!

Tribal Belly Dance Camp: Fun, Funky & Powerful tribal belly dancing. Including workshops and performances!

Blinky Blinky Blinky: I've done a bunch of art on the Playa, The L2K ring, the L3K ring last year, and the hypknowtrons. I'll bring the hypknowtrons and set up some very nice blinky art.

Camp Pornyata: An adult themed camp bringing gifts of spanking open pornyata's to recieve adult toys, gifts ect. 18 and over only.

Radical Faerie Camp: We are a mixed gender queer group of folks that would love to create queer safe space at the gathering.
So, the question here is: do I let things slide that direction; do we keep it down to fire events, regionals, both; or do we allow no event posting?
I'm debating putting one up, I've been using my own site to provide information to my group, I don't know how important it is or what difference it would make if the group had it's own site - and what kind of additional headache it would be to maintain over time, expandability, etc. I suspect a contenmt management site or a "movable type" thing would work well enough.

It's not a bio-diesel variant, but it is non-petroleum from plan sources.... and best of all, it's green. Eco-green, green colored, and provides green flame.... GREEN damnit! :) I called them on it and asked the rep about them and they glycerine and alcohol come from plant and animal sources, not petrol.

Okay, i've uncovered a variety of sources for biodeisel. Let me start by saying that these sources are not all "clean" in that some contain various percentages of petrol fuel. Also, the actual BD components may not be the same, totally green, ingredients as we plan to have in the burn night fuel, but they should burn similar to the final product.

The purpose of this is
1) to give you a chance to see how this stuff burns,
2) as a backup source of BD in case the project can't make quota
3) to help the shins plan choreography with a fuel that will not transfer, and burns lonnger than usual
4) Maybe save y'all some cash. BD 99.9 is cheap.

Okay, so in this resource guide, B20 is 20% biodeisel, B99 is 99.9% Biodeisel, and B100 is made with a non-petrol process.

Everyone’s invited to co-create the magic we’ll spin on the playa this year...we need fire dancers, safety people, drummers, photographers, videographers, adoring fans...

Mark your calendars: Sunday, March 4th at noon at the Watershed, 5040 SE Milwaukie

Why would you come all the way to Portland that weekend? Glad you asked! There are no fewer than 3 other major events happening here that weekend that would make anybody travel to our fair, wet city…

Aphelion, a borg (work) party (March 3, 5p- wee hours of the morning)
March 4th’s anniversary shows (March 4, 3:30 all ages & 8:30 21+)
Community Fire and Drum Jam (March 4, 8/8:30- ???)
as well as the usual Dante’s Sinferno and, of course, the Conclave Meeting!

What more could you ask for?

How about a space dedicated to collaborative work that actually wants large bands of crazy fire performers hanging out & doing their thing?

Sound good? Then make your way to Aphelion (3/3/07) at the new Watershed building to meet up with Burning Man theme camps and conclaves, other projects, groups and businesses, and anyone else who shows up to “fly their banner.” This is also a party, complete with dj’s, dancing, merriment and madness. Oh yeah, and alcohol. And lots of cool people from Seattle and other parts of the West Coast. And fire. Oh, yeah!

This affects us as the Oregon Conclave because this space, and the 30’ wide dead end street it sits on, have been offered to us for Conclave meetings and rehearsals in exchange for participation from the community. Our part at Aphelion is to discuss fire at the new building, and begin planning on how we want to handle the fire department in relation to this building.

It's Aphelion from Burning Man, exactly 6 months till the burn.
http://tribes.tribe.net/watershedpdx

If you are interested in learning more about the conclave, please come to the meeting. Whether you can come to the meeting or not, please get in touch by phone or by email to let us know we should keep you in the loop.

You can also join the Oregon Conclave Tribe to keep up with and contribute to planning, or to post photos or video links related to the Conclave.

One of the biggest reasons I put this tribe together was because of the recent lack of connectivity for conclave memebers via Burningman. Currently neither of the shin lists are running (no doubt a little bit my fault there...), and the only conclave list is an announcement list that Crimson moderates.

As many of you know I've organized the Ocean of Fire for the last two years, and, quite frankly, I found easier to pull teeth than to get information out to the general fire spinning public of burning man. Stuff that hits the main list disappears in a storm of trollism in a minute. The only real way to get communications to all the fire spinners is to join ALL the various conclave and performance tribes and post listings to them.

My current project is the Friday night fire fight. Basically, Crimson has asked my group not to have large fire combat battles this year (we've planned two in a row now, though we got cut off in 2005 and didn't get to perform it the first time). but i the spirit of cooperation, I'm trying to find a different venue for this energy that doesn't include the great circle.

So, upon reviewing the tapes, I noticed several tribes this year either Doing combat, or at least mocking some form of fire combat this year. I thought it might be nice to get all the fire combatants together for a big feild battle and maybe settling some one on one disputes... (Riz, I'm looking at you...)

What I'm looking for are
1) Any sources of bio-Methanol. this is methanol that is distilled from organic matter, not fractionally distilled from petrol.
2) Good sources of short chain, fully saturated vegetable oil
..a) first, we need to find the best short chain oil. Fewest number of carbons is best.
..b) Second, we'll want "fully saturated" over partially saturated, if possible (cleaner burn)
..c) Third, cheaper is better, Sacremento pickup is preferred over shipping

Please, browse around and look, or even make a few calls. If you're kinda lost on the whole carbon size thing, take a look at the fuelbusters section of NAFAA: http://www.nafaa.org/mba_fire5.html

In talks that we've had I've explained all the fuels that are used with fire dancing. Due to the continual contact with the skin (especially the palms) I recommended using 99% Rubbing Alcohol. I just recently discovered the he is planning on finding men's cologne that has a high enough alcohol % to use so it can smell good. I personally think this to be a bad idea. There is nothing that I've found that indicates using this as a fuel. What I am wondering is this. Are there any stories out there about this, possibly maybe :)

I have been inspired to be “more green” this year and the discussion of greening the fuel and the recycle art garden by the Black Rocks Art Foundation has gotten me to thinking.

I have locally decided to recycle the fuel cans that are used to store the white gas/camping fuel into a Flaming Lotus Flower Cauldron and see how many of these I can make before Burning Man. I am collecting all the spent cans from all the fire performers in Salt Lake City vicinity.

I thought it would be a cool idea of other fire performers creating art work from their spent fuel cans and together we can create a sculpture garden for Burning Man ’07 fit to a tee with the Greening of the Man theme. Not only do we share our fire performance at Burning Man, we can also contribute sculpture art from recycling.

If anyone else is interested in this project, I would be happy to be the “Curator” to oversee the management and coordination of the different groups of people willing to bring out their fuel can art and installing them somewhere on the Playa.

I would like to start a discussion to see if people are interested in a unified theme, aka flowers or whatever, or eclectic creations.

At the end of Burning Man, I would attempt to arrange for an exhibit at the San Francisco Decompression and then an auction of the work with proceeds being distributed to a agreed upon non-profit organization that could really use the money.
