The Clock Is Ticking!

Hey, folks - just a friendly reminder that the Mutant Vehicle application deadline is TUESDAY, JUNE 30TH. And really, you want it in by the Friday before, because sure as water's wet, there *will* be server issues. Yesterday (5/31) was the Theme Camp application deadline, and so many people were trying to hit the forms site because OMG they forgot that the site was down for several hours. It's happened before, odds are it'll happen again - so Don't Be That Guy. Get your paperwork done NOW.

No, you don't need to have your vehicle finished before you apply - but the more information you can provide in your application, the easier you make it on yourself *and* the Hotties. A photo of the unmodified base vehicle is really only helpful in the context of a before-and-after shot. In the absence of a photo of the completed project, you can provide a concept sketch, a photomanipulation, a link to Flickr or Photobucket with work-in-progress shots...but the DMV needs to be able to tell what you intend to bring to the event.

Are people getting their MV acceptance letters yet or is the DMV waiting until after the deadline to send them out? Curious mutant minds want to know.

I think they're issued as they get processed. Got my letter about a week after I submitted - but I assume the backlog will increase as the deadline nears.

Brett is correct - invitation letters go out within 24 hours of the processing session in which the vehicle is approved for on-playa inspection; rejection letters take slightly longer, as they are customized for the applicant. In general, (and this is stated in the confirmation letter you receive when you apply), if you have not heard from the Department within six weeks of filing your application, you should write directly to dmv(at)burningman(dot)com. PMs to people you know who work for the Department take that much longer to get a proper response, because they have to turn around and forward the message to the people who actually work with the database and can give you an official answer.

Brett is also correct regarding the backlog getting larger the closer we get to the deadline. The Department licensed 489 vehicles on-playa in 2008, 486 in 2007; in both years, fully half of those licensees completed their applications on or after June 20th.
