Response from Bertrum regarding air brushing and his camp, the Body Art Guild at Burning Man. Thanks for your response! I'm excited!

    Hi Jonesy,

Saw your post on the Body Art tribe.

So, time to learn airbrush body painting.
    It ain't that tough.
You already do body art, so it's just the technique of airbrushing.

First, and important, You only spray folks at 20 PSI or less. If you spray someone at more than 20 PSI, you can inject air into people's skin. That gives them the same problem as scuba divers, the bends.
    Not a good idea.

Using FDA approved body paint's also a good idea. Most folks don't have much trouble with acrylic's but when they do........ Can be nasty.

The basics of airbrush can be picked up from a book, and a half day of practice/play.
The recent issue of Airbrush Action had a couple of good articles you'd want to read. One was on Trouble Shooting airbrush problems. The other was on doing the Soft Dagger Stroke.

One big issue for folks it to turn on the air.
    Then start the paint.
    Stop the paint.
    Then back off the air.

I've been doing airbrush body painting for the past 4 years now. And really only a few weeks a year.
Yet when I entered one competition, I placed in the top 10.

You can go to the Face & Body Paint Convention they have each year. They have Airbrush classes each year. Kind of expensive. I went one year, and frankly, wasn't impressed. I didn't learn squat.

There are also classes that Airbrush Action offers. They don't offer body painting, but the skills of airbrush can then be done on human flesh.

Meantime, We at the Black Rock Body Art Guild are in a scramble. This will be our 4th year on the playa. The first year we got next to a plaza, and a friend was on the plaza, so he let us tap into the power grid on the plaza. Without power for the aircompressors, we can't do airbrush.
The last two years we were on the grid, (CC or Plaza).
Well, this year, we apparently didn't rate. We are just across the street from the grid of Center Camp.
So, right now, we ain't doing airbrush.
We need a generator, and it ain't looking like we can get one for us. Our paint budget was $2000 last year. And we already bought for this year. So the $$ are tapped out.

Otherwise, I'd say get an airbrush, and get on over to the Body Art Guild and we'd give you air, and get you started.

    Keep Smiling,
    Bertrum

Anxious and Wheel of Fortune, (But no airbrush this year).

Just a reponse to Betrum's notation about the Face & Body Art Convention - Betrum we met there in SF.
And that was in 2004, the third convention held and the first year they offered airbrush classes.
I wasn't impressed either - but my skills surpassed equaled the instructors. Most of whom I now friends.

I think you will find as the Face and Body Art International Convention now enters it 6th year - as far as airbrushing you will now be impressed. The focus is still face art as it is with the new Face and Body Art Convention which has a great line up of instuctors - again the focus is face art. But both do provide airbrushing skills and body art - both are held in Orlando, produced by women who were business partners in the first 5 conventions - one is in January, one in May. Let's just say the airbrush and overall body art experience has really grown there - and at $250 to be able to take several classes some with body artists who are very talented at their chosen profession, plus paint and jam with painters from all over in varying skill levels is a good deal - but then I paint every week - day - this is what I do for a living.

Bertrum you were one of like what three airbrush body costumes that night? - Painted by my dear friend Marta Fischer of Party Faces.

How about coming and seeing 30 professional models/dancers/performers body painted a night = some airbrushed some sponge and brushwork - presenting the artworks set to music, movement and dance. Awesome experience. Classes by four winners of the World Body Painting Festival ---- now winning a prize or title doesn't necessarily impress me --- but these guys are great artists and have some great skills. Nick and Brian Wolfe took 2nd, Mark Reid took 6th, Vargas took 12th and Craig Tracy judged at the 2007 World Body Painting Festval in Austria. They are friendly, fun, approachable and willing to share what they know about body painting. And I a delighted to be painting with them at the US Body Painting Festvial in September. This year we also have a specila effects/FX catagory and will have black lights for fun fluro artworks. We are a Festival of the Arts - the art of Body painting - not an industry convention - we paint, party and share that experience with the public at large.

It just isn't that easy to cut and dry body art. Yes, Airbrush Action rocks and basic airbrush skills do transfer to body art - but painting a tshirt is a bike fender is a model. The paints and paint brands vary, environment plays a huge factor, skin types, and that effects many things including psi level and your brand of airbrush. It is fairly simple --- if you are not looking to make your living at this art. If your are -- I say investing more will reap you more. If you want to play - play.

And Bertrum the US Body Painting Festival is coming really close to you next year - come out and play with us. I promise it will be loads of fun and you'll have new tricks to take to the desert. And you can show us some tricks. The Fetival is a blast.

The US Body Painting Festival has classes and hands on workshops.
You take classes and have a chance to jam with amazing world class body painters as well as emerging new artists.
Everybody paints and on two night the publc is invited in and the artworks are presented on stage.

Some really talented airbrush body artists will be there - most all the top paid and well know body artist paint sponge and brush, and airbrush, Although many direct their signature into one medium.

This year's airbrush instructors are Pashur and Mark Greenawalt. But the talents of Craig Tracy. Vargas, Jackie Green, Nick Wolfe and Mark Reid will be present. Cory Conrad will be hosting the airbrush jam room - a placce to play with the brushes and try out the tricks.

It is in Albuquerque, New Mexico, September 20, 21 & 22, 2007 - it will however be making it's way to the west coast next year.

A good magazine is Illusion the preimer magazine dedicated to body and face painting. There are a copule of good conventions in Florida. and classes in Ohio with Neil Roth. I teach body art airbrushing I am outside Sacramento, California.

Where are you - and more especifically what do you want to learn? Do you want to do it for hobby or pay?

    Sweet Loretta
