Spring Break

Well, I was back at home with my boys in the country for ten whole days!! When I'm at home I usually jog 1.5 miles down this road and walk back (in exhaustion), but due to my uplifted fitness level, I found I was able to jog all the way back, too! That's 3 miles!!! Seriously, I have never even considered running 3 miles before, ever in my life!! In fact, I always used to cheat on the mile in school! Yeah!! Anyways, that was a big victory for me. I was really bad with my eating, though. Like, pretty much total pig out. Ooops. Well, fortunately (thank you, God!) I didn't gain any weight. (If anything, maybe a 1/4 lb) That is a miracle in itself considering all the junk I ate!! Now I am back at school and ready for blast-off, fat-burning power mode. My plan is to add an evening jog to the routine I already have going. This will be tough because I don't have much time, but it would be really nice to lose 10-15 more lbs before my wedding. So that's my goal! How's everybody else doing??

awesome! i wish i could run, its on my list of life goals (along with learning french and trying surfing....) i actually tried today at the gym, i usually do the elliptical, which i can do at a fast pace much more easily than i can actualy run. but i tried the treadmill for awhile. i could run for five solid minutes! heh... i'm not sure if my asthma is something i can overcome without drugs.

i had a phone call to answer during that post so i just finished my sentence and hit submit, which is why it sounds sort of abrupt....

anyway. kelsey, dude, it sounds like you're bubbling with vitality! i wouldnt sweat the small stuff too much! not that you do.

anyone struggle with asthma? i feel almost like i'm cheating if i use an inhaler- like my energy is coming from the steroids in it. i dont like to take any drugs, including tylenol, because i'm always trying to tune into my body's messages. and i do believe i (everyone) can be healed by natural remedies and invoking a belief in healing. but asthma is a bitch. i keep feeling like i've got bounding energy but i can't breathe! ack. i guess i need to be more proactive about natural remedies if i really do want to heal. i've come along quite a ways in the regard, but i still have a lot of work to do. each obstacle at a time.

getting more endurance, breathing-wise, figuring out a way through that, is definitely my biggest goal!

also i would like to try doing a raw food diet for a week or so, and see how that feels. not really a goal exactly, just something i'd like to try.

You know, I always hated jogging sooo much. What eventually got me liking it was jogging along forest trails. They have peaceful beautiful scenery and you actually feel like you're going somewhere. For me, a treadmill is torture! (However, I have been using them lately while watching 'redneck wedding show' which I guess disracts me enough to not be hating it!)
As for asthma, I'm sorry that sucks. I don't know what to do about that. My boyfriend (Husband 2 months!!) has pleurisy and it only bothers him when he exercises, so it's kind of like asthma. He really just can't do things beyond a certain level without feeling like he's having a heart attack. Interestingly, we discovered that his pleurisy is also aggravated by diet sodas!
Thanks for the support, Jackie! Things like that just make me realize that I have a long way to go to get in control of my eating. I mean- I do really well within my routine, but it feels like changes in my life really trigger me to get into an out-of-control state. I don't like that. I just want to be moderate and healthy, ya know?

I hear you guys on the asthma and the upcoming wedding. I have asthma, and just like you Jackie, I feel like I have the energy to keep going, but I just can't get enough air!

So because of that, I'm not much of a runner. But the more physically fit I am, the easier it is.

I've been eating well and excercising, but not nearly enough as I should. TOMORROW is APRIL!!!!!

I'm totally renewing my motivation, my wedding is in May and I want to look damn good and not be self-conscious that day. So for all of April, I need to really step it up. For me I really have GOT to plan ahead, when I don't I get really hungry and eat whatever is readily available. Today I brought celery, carrots and hummus to work, to snack on and it kept me satiated all day.

I'm kind of pep talking myself as I'm writing this, so it probably sounds weird. But it helps to get it out in writing.

You can do it, Mandy!! I've been doing the hummus and veggies thing too, which has been a lifesaver for me. I am getting to the point that I actually crave the raw veggies! It really cleans you out and makes your body feel good! I make a different experiemental hummus each weekend and chop up my vegetables and everything ahead of time. This last weekend I accidentally made hummus that tastes like pizza!! Kind of strange, but I have been craving pizza lately!!
You know, I've always heard that you burn roughly the same amount of calories whether you walk a mile or jog a mile, it just takes longer to walk it. As long as you can set aside the time, walking a couple times a day should get some results. I have also been trying not to eat anything after 7pm and I think that has really helped me make progress.
I know what you mean about feeling comfortable on your big day. I am almost to my goal and am sooo excited!! (also getting married in May!)

        > I've always heard that you burn roughly the same amount of calories whether you walk a mile or jog a mile, it just takes longer to walk it.

This is true. When I go on the treadmill at the gym, if I run a mile my pace is like 10 minutes some seconds per mile and that 's like 100 calories burned. So if you're doing something (ie elliptical) and you burned 200 calories, it's the equivalent of "running" two miles. If you _want_ to start to get where you are running for a sustained distance (like a mile or three in a single go) I think interval training is THE WAY. You can't beat it, it will totally make you stronger and faster. So like what I like to do when I am not in the mood to run but I want to do some cardio is get on the treadmill, walk for like 3-5 minutes to warm up and 0% incline and like 3.5 MPH. Then I do this kind of routine (adjust speeds and inclines to taste, but challenge yourself!):

For 2 minutes, gradually increase your speed and/or incline, until it is just higher than comfortable.

Then, for the next 2 minutes, every 15 seconds, increase the incline 1 percent.

Again, for the next 2 minutes, increase the incline 1 percent every 15 seconds.

For 2 minutes, every 15 seconds, decrease the incline 1 percent.

Increase the speed to a run (or fast walk) for one minute.

Decrease the speed (to recover) for the next 2 minutes.

For the next 2 minutes, increase the incline 1 percent every 15 seconds.

Then decrease the incline 1 percent every 15 seconds for 2 minutes.

For 1 minute, increase the incline to about 15 or 20 percent and work as hard as you can.

For 2 minutes, decrease the incline to 0 percent (to recover).

For 5 minutes, walk at a comfortable pace (to cool down).

Total workout time: 26 minutes or so depending on your warm-up and cool down.
