Hey

There's this new opera and they need help.

I'm putting out a call for folks who might want to donate some time to an amazing project.
You can hear the demo here www.burningopera.com <http://www.burningopera.com>
This is a link to more of the recorded music http://www.thereallybig.com/how%20to%20survive%20the%20apocalypse/

Here's the full story on this piece.

A guy named Mark Nichols, a brilliant composer and Erik Davis, a brilliant writer got together with some talented folks and created this piece.
They have about 20 minutes written and recorded. Mark is planning on writing 10 more songs. It's dark, it's freakish, it spans all genres, it is beautiful and haunting. It will be a theatrical stage play. The long term goal is to tour it in a much larger community involved type road show.
This piece "How to survive the Apocalypse" being the main attraction.

At the moment there is no budget for this. I am donating my time producing and my theatre for auditions, rehearsals and 2 nights in January to stage
the 20 minutes they have written. Our hope in staging this is to gather more interest, performers, perhaps investors, and basically see how it looks and sounds on stage.

I'll post the audition/rehearsal/show schedule below.

This is what Mark Nichols is looking for and some of the roles:

:::::As far as band, we're looking for volunteers who really like the music and can see themselves in the band. I'd like them to audition along with the actors. Looking for people who are comfortable with an audience and who've played a lot of theater. Looking for players with a great sense (and LOVE) of dynamics. Generally a theater band has to play more quietly and intensely than they're used to and make it full. Would appreciate people who are very comfortable with funk and breakbeat. Listen to the demo at www.burningopera.com <http://www.burningopera.com>
and see if it is what you want to be doing. Must be prepared for theatrix. If you're interested in assistant music directing and conducting the shows please say so now.::::

As far as cast, singing is highest priority and good harmony singing at that. Looking for freaks and talented actor/movers/people who can connect honestly. Looking for voices that make people jealous.

Jean Geanie: a drag queen must be able to sing harmony
A young dude who will play the young dude , Bud "It's time to party..." A good singer/dancer good look, versitle, maybe plays an instrument
A bass or baritone who can play the 'Mustachio' part. He's a provacateur. Maybe a puppeteer, mime or clown. Anarchist.
Another woman chorus, good look, hopefully sings harmony great and can play a band instrument or strings, or can do Bulgarian Women's choir style or opera.
Bass Player
Theatrical drummer, (this is someone who can play with bundled stick or brushes and has excellent sense of dynamics)
Keyboard/DJ type (good musician and computer geek) plays Djembe also
Video op
Guitar
Maybe some horns or strings (violin or viola)

We're also looking for:
Costumers
Stage Managers
Light Tech
Sound Tech
Set designers
Production Assistant
Assistant Director
Promotions
Investors

If this interests you at all please get a hold of myself (ty@stagewerx.org) or mark at mn@thereallybig.com

We had been warned: it was candy raver central, with music so loud it hurt. I thought that demographic had died a decade ago, but alas: a bastion of plush rainbowbright remains amongst the fifteen-year-olds in the arid southron lands of this fair state. Who knew?

Has it really been a year since we both discovered each other? as crazy as that might sound, it's true! And really I gotta say I have had more fun rocking the Bohemian Carnival then any other party in SF. Really it's true. We've got a great thing going and I cannot wait to rock beats for all y'all once again. I mean, Remember the Hay Maze party? How much fucking fun was that? and Decompression?

So listen, I need a little bit of help from the Bohemian Carnival this week. The last day to vote for the nitevibe dj dream team is this friday. Now I know y'all don't really get into this whole Cult Of DJ thing (and really I don't blame you...) BUT it would mean a great deal to me if we could continue this amazing and wondrous trip that we're on. I'm doing chin-ups on the bottom rung of the top ten and I need all the support I can mobilize for this last push to the end. And with your support, I think we can do it!

Gypsy beats, balkan bangers, klezmer dancehall and more. I told them I'd talk them up in the Bay, so that's what I'm doing. They ARE fantastic.
before, uh, goin to dance...
and, in fact, silly security confiscates yer keychain bottle opener
but misses the can of pepper spray entirely... and a couple of other things...
whatever.

the club left some of the nekyia girls in the dark on their floor-level stage
and i dunno if gooferman quite got the rockstar spotlights they deserve and wear so well
(but rather some camoflouge'y pattern of shadows... uhh...)

blehhh can the fest not be there again, if possible...
i think a single room venue with an active m.c./showman/host makes the night way more circus-y

A recent Saturday, 11:47 p.m.: When Gooferman, a clown-faced art band, took the stage, it seemed as if someone had lit a match, igniting an urban wildfire fueled by the city's howling underground society. On the one-year anniversary of the almost monthly Bohemian Carnival, the floor of the DNA Lounge was transformed into a lustful pit of excitement as scantily clad dancers licked each other and hula hoopers in hot pants gyrated in front of a voyeuristic pack of photographers. A single trapeze artist twisting overhead also commanded a generous allotment of oohs and ahhs. Even the squarest-looking souls lurking in the quiet corners were dancing on their bar stools by the third song. San Francisco is where the wild things are. Chronicle photo by Mike Kepka

Hi and thanks in advance for your interest in this survey. As a member of the San Francisco Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory class of 2007 I am required to do a research project. In general, there is not much written on the history of circus, and the research projects are an attempt to begin to enlarge the library of information pertaining both to the past and present. I’m looking towards the future, and would like to begin to break ground to bring recognition and respect to alternative circus and clowning- aka “cirkus” and “clowning”. Feel free to answer the questions below with as much or as little information as you see fit. You do not have to answer all of them (but please give me at least one name). Be honest, tell me off, tell clowns off, tell klowns off, whatever you want. Please send a private message with your answers, and feel free to forward to any and all that might be interested and willing to participate. Thanks, Cynthia

Clown vs Klown Project Proposal

The purpose of this project will be to attempt to have the members of the subversive/alternative/underground clown/circus community define themselves, their style and their purpose, if any. "Klown", as I understand it, began as a movement of subversive clowning with a major theme of sex, sexuality- especially including sexual deviance. With the growing visibility of subcultures such as the Burning Man community, subversive/alternative/underground circus and clowning is gaining in popularity and with it we find term "klown" used more and more in areas unrelated to the sexual origins. Granted, the distinction is primarily made on the internet, based on the spelling of the word, however rather than detracting from the significance I believe this adds to it; the internet continues to have a major impact on our society which in turn is certainly creating changes in circus and clowning both in how they are approached and received.

The foundation of my research will be interviewing individuals who define themselves as and by "circus", regardless of whether or not they are actual circus performers or just freaks spinning fire at a warehouse party under a free-standing aerial rig. Based on the small amount of research I have done the subversive circus and the klown are mostly unexplored. Many in the subversive/alternative/underground circus movement don't understand the rich tradition behind the circus that you know and that I am learning about, but they are creating their own traditions and growing in numbers so quickly that it can't be ignored. In the Burning Man community alone the number of stiltwalkers, aerialists, and "clowns" has multiplied exponentially in the past three years since I first attended the event; there are no less than four "circuses" performing nightly, the stiltwalkers gathering went from 30 to nearly 100 in attendance, and this past year the numbers of people who considered themselves “in circus” were large enough to create a village, called appropriately enough The Red Nose District.

In part it irritates the hell out of me because I don't want them subverting or invalidating the tradition I am breaking my neck to be a part of, and at the same time it fascinates me because the "families" they are creating are as rich and tight as what I understand traditional circus families to be. And, admittedly, there is more than one alternative circus that I have longed to be a part of.

I could go on endlessly, but much of my though is circular at this point, which is one of the reasons I chose this subject. I want to begin to understand the relationships and the distinctions between the old and the new, the traditional and the alternative.
