My good friend, Sue Cole and I use to take 'bone walks' up in the hills around
UCSC in Santa Cruz..........................long meandering walks in which we
practised our 'bone' and spoon techniques.
I did a recording once (that never surfaced) the very first time I met the amazing
Paganinni of the spoons, Artis the Spoonman, playing a kind of
spoon marimba (one of my favorite kinds of ersatz gamelan music, you just
lay a ton of different sized spoons down and play them with other spoons as
mallets............it's so magical and exotic).
We had one of those peak moments that night recording on two sides of the
recording booth (unable to see each other). We both ended our long improvisation
on exactly the same not and it was truly magical.
That's what got me into playing spoons. I had seen Artis on the wonderful David Sanborn
show in the mid 1980's and suddenly I got to record with him............what a thrill.
I'll join your tribe.............................for sure!!!!!
