Re: Artis in action
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 9:45 PMWatching that back in the 80's was my first exposure to Artis.
I wish they had included the little bit from the program right before they went to commercial.
It was so funny.
Artis (in sepia tones) said, "Many people thing that the spoons are not a very sophisticated
musical instrument, capable of producing different emotions, but it's not true.
With the spoons you can, as an example express love, the romantic kind
and he went takatakatakatakatakataktakataka
"of course there is also love, that is more like filial love or maternal love
"takatakatakatakatatakatakattak"
and then there is rage
"takatakatakatakatakatakataka"
it was so funny because he was so deadpanned and earnest and he played the exact same thing
for each example.
It was such a beautiful introduction to such a modest musician who had a great sense of humor.
Later, when he came to Santa Cruz and I have my first and only chance to record with him,
I learned that he was also a really wonderful street poet.........a person who was really way outside of the
dominant paradigm and a truly fantastic and humorous ''out of the box' performer.
Just recently, I had the privilege of having him come and headline the Y2K6 International Live Looping
Festival with a set of midi-spoons and a looper. he did another wonderful performance.
Artis, has always lived outside of the typical constraints of society and he is an important artist I think.
He has also had some truly debilitating health problems in the past few years and he is desparately broke.
Please , if you have it in your heart, send this man a paypal contribution or buy one of his CDs or DVDs.
It's a wonderful way to spend a few dollars and he is an artist who is truly deserving.
He can be contacted here: artis@speakeasy.net
God bless, Artis the Spoonman........long may he live and perform. -

Re: Artis in action
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:53 PMoh bless you, Vash for posting that.
It's funny how much it changed in my mind after some 25 years...........lol
I just laughed and laughed when that came on the television.
and, wow, that music show was the best thing that ever hit US television. It was so cool that Sanborn
juxtaposed so many interesting musicians. I remember seeing Philip Jeck there for the first time.
We did some investigating at one point and found out that there were too many artist releases to be signed to ever have
that series come out on DVD (but they said, several years ago, that they were working on it). I'd buy the whole set.
Sanborn would have these really weird and disparate artists get together and jam at the end of the show......old bluesmen
and avant cabaret people and just plain weirdo musicians who defy category like Jeck or Artis. Brilliant!
thanks for posting these memories -

Re: Artis in action
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 4:47 AMNight Music was an amazing program... too good to last it seems. I think my favorite Night Music pairing has to be Conway Twitty with The Residents behind him: www.youtube.com/watch . Just freaking SURREAL! And Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" is just amazing, just a weird pent up energy to that performance.
I'd definitely buy a Night Music DVD set.... Maybe it's time for a new Night Music or Midnight Special to take to the airwaves...!?
